I have constructed a little table with the information about how ranking of players change over the last year. In the 1400-1600 category one can see there is a clear trend. At the beginning of the year a person with a rating of 1400 was ranked 1171, while at the end of the year a person with the same rating is ranked 1126. This trend does not happen in 1700-1800 category. It obviously does not prove anything and more data is required to make any conclusions. However, this pattern is consistent with what I would expect.

Essentially there are 2 effects that take place at the same time. Firstly, there is a deflation due to underrated juniors which is coming from the bottom of rating distribution. Secondly, there is a relative inflation due to the fact that players who have no ACF ratings get FIDE ratings allocated. (Good example of this effect could be the dynamics of rating of Ambrus, Endre. His starting rating was around 2380, in less than a year Andre's rating dropped by 70 points.) The second effect comes from the top of the rating distribution.

Now at about 1700-1800 these two effects cancel each other. For ratings below 1600 the first effect dominates the second. Please do not take it as an arttack on the current rating system but rather an attempt to understand what is actually going on.:)

The more one loses to under-rated juniors, the more one's rating goes down (unless one can score a few upset victories). I know this from personal experience.

And Bill, thanks again for your impressive efficiency in getting the ratings out.

Is this another trend that merits further investigation? Based on your figures and allowing some rough adjustments, 1500+ is top 900, 1600+ is top 700, 1700+ is top 500 but that is the end of a standard deviation, 1800+ is top 350.

One would expect the players ratings to be approximately a normal distribution.

Bobby, I think this year (and its second half in particular) was an exception in your usually good performances, even after long breaks, in major tournament events!
I believe that, as time passes and other non chess plans and goals are fulfilled, you will have more time for the sport and eventually be able to perform according to your real abilities.
I also believe that a deep and meaningful analysis of your planning your next step with GG is of paramount importance at this stage.
Coming to think of it, the guy is formidable not only as a player but as a Chess thinker in general.
Cheers and good luck!

That little pattern mentioned by drug in #23 is very striking and deserves further investigation. I followed it back to the September 2007 list to see if the same thing has been happening since then too, and whether it has anything to do with the number of total players active. These are the results:

month total 1400 1500 1600 1700 1800
Sep2007 2393 1234 989 759 541 382
Dec2007 2421 1221 975 730 530 352
Mar2008 2379 1171 933 697 506 334
Jun2008 2326 1141 912 689 494 329
Sep2008 2368 1133 908 690 502 334
Dec2008 2382 1126 899 680 496 335

The figures above show the total number of active-listed players for each period and then the numbers of players rated above each of 1400, 1500, 1600, 1700 and 1800.

For the lower cutoffs the decline in numbers above that cutoff is sharpest in the periods Mar 2008 and Jun2008 in which there were substantial declines in the total number of rated players. However, when the total number of rated players fell, the numbers above the lower rating brackets kept falling.

For the 1800+ group, oddly, the biggest decline occurs in the Dec2007 period in which the overall ratings pool grew, and after that the rate of decline is much slower (indeed there is no evidence of it beyond Mar2008).

Another possible hypothesis I can think of is that, for whatever reasons, more junior-oriented or junior-dominated and less adult-oriented or adult-dominated chess is being rated at the moment than has recently been the case. That would also be consistent with what we see here because if club-level adults were dropping off the list through "inactivity", even when the list grew in total numbers, most of the new entries would be at the bottom. It is also possible that both explanations are partially correct.

However if it is mainly a demographic shift in the rating pool it would have to be a very big one because numbers in the 1400-1700 ratings brackets are down about 9% in the space of 15 months, which seems like a lot.

To figure out which it is (may well be both), it might be useful to look at players who were rated in one of the brackets in Sep 2007 and see how many have ceased to be active-rated, how many have moved up out of that bracket, and how many have fallen to a lower rating. Also see how many have entered that bracket and where they came from (were they new arrivals or moving up or down from other brackets). That still won't necessarily give a conclusive answer but may well shed some light on what's going on.

Another possible hypothesis I can think of is that, for whatever reasons, more junior-oriented or junior-dominated and less adult-oriented or adult-dominated chess is being rated at the moment than has recently been the case.

I now have firm reason to believe that this is at least partly the case, ie that in the last year and a bit, for whatever reason(s), there have been significantly fewer adults and slightly more juniors playing rated games than during the few years before that.

Whether this alone explains the pattern observed by drug or is only part of the explanation I cannot as yet say.

Vlad

Kevin, your additional numbers show that the change is even more drastic than I thought. They also show that the trend is noticeable for all ratings in the 1400-1800 diapason (I would expect for lower ratings 1200-1400 it will be even stronger.). For the 1800 rating the numbers are smaller, as a result the law of large numbers does not perfectly work and you just do not get continuous trend but rather “chunky” one.

I agree with you about the possibility of the second reason that explains the trend observed. However, the main question is how much of the 9-10% change is due to replacement effect (the one that you suggested) and how much is due to deflation. I do not have access to the age information of players. If you could possibly construct the table of proportions of players being juniors for all rating groups that would be appreciated.

Kevin Bonham
04-12-2008, 11:49 AM
I do not have access to the age information of players. If you could possibly construct the table of proportions of players being juniors for all rating groups that would be appreciated.

The info I have seen at this stage doesn't go that far. What I have seen (after discussing it with Bill) is broad breakdowns into adult/junior. One of the breakdowns I have seen is the number of players flagged as adults who have played rated games in given periods. This shows, for instance, that the average number of rated adults playing rated games per period for the five periods in which the changes mentioned above occurred is down 10% compared to the fifteen periods prior to that, while the number of juniors playing rated games is up 7.6%. The juniors aren't actually playing more games between them, but more of them playing means more names onto the list, mostly coming in with low ratings.

I also know that the Ratings Officers are looking at monitoring by age bands - this is a little trickier given that there are still so many players for whom no date of birth is on file but if it can be done rigorously it should give more useful insights.

I am also doing some age-bracket monitoring for Tasmania since Tasmania has a high proportion of juniors and thus any deflation caused by juniors should show up here (also I know how old people are here, roughly) - however the problem is small sample size; it's no good saying that adults in the 35-45 range in Tasmania are losing 10 points per year on average if there is actually no points loss from that group once you remove player "Bonham, Kevin".

The drop is no surprise at all given how the rating system is calculated. The surprise is that the drop is not accellerating and it is not greater than 12%. See the discussion in posts 34-37. It may well be that it has little to do with how the system is calculated and much more to do with current changes in the demographics of chessplayers - more juniors and fewer adults playing rated games.
