my favourite game is a 3 way tie between star wars: the force unleashed, pokemon pearl version and marvel: ultimate alliance. I think marvel is an awesome company but they should make some more games. They are bound to after they release that captain America movie.

Have I mentioned MaroKart? :)

I've also played Zelda, Twilight Princess and Mario Galaxy. I liked Mario Golf 64 and have played Mario Golf for the GCN (Toadstool Tour) but don;t like it as much.

On PC I've played Neverwinter Nights, Medieval Total War, Age of Empires, Warlords, Bridge Baron and Settlers of Catan.

Not a big gamer. But I do like the Morrowind/elder scrolls series. Interesting in that you get punished as in RL; if you kill normal people you have to pay a fine and/or get jailed. Actually it's better to use the game charcters rather than whack them....mostly.

Dunno where I got the 9th from, since an exact date hasn't been announced, but all the major sites that are publishing previews are talking about February. One would have to assume they're being fed this by Guerilla Games.

And the videos of gameplay that are floating around the place look pretty amazing for a console.

oh yeah. the escort mission??
that was SO frustrating... took me HOURS to complete.
I hated that part, it was the hardest part in the whole game for me... even the final boss fight was not hard.
and also, get a walkthrough or watch a vid demonstration if it helps you.

I've only had two attempts and I think so I haven't spent as much time no it as the earlier mission of chasing that guy on the giant boars. My feeling is a I could do it, just needed more practice but got bored and stopped playing. ;)

I've been playing a lot of Monopoly on the Wii lately but I think once I open all the boards that will probably become a more rarely played game too.

i tried at least 20 times. no joke.
lol
the boars were pretty easy for me..
but the escort mission........ it was the toughest part of the game.
I mean...... the stupid bird that drops the bomb in the intersection of the first part kept stuffing me up and making the stupid carriage go around in circles, and i would end up nowhere. with that aside, the rest isnt too bad.

LOZ:OoT's AMAZING, especially for that price. In my opinion, the best game on Wiiware. :)
If I get it connected onto the internet and buy a classic controller and a wii points card, it'll be the first Wii/ware virtual console game I'll buy on wii.
Graphics for N64 games aren't that bad - they're better than the other games offered on Wiiware/virtual console that are 2D.
Also, get MarioKart64 if you don't have Mario Kart Wii :)

Well, I used to play it when I was in grade 5, up to lvl 64 (combat)... quit in grade 6 now I'm bored of it, cos its way too repetitive. So I only go on for special events (christmas, easter, halloween) now, or when I'm really bored, and only made it up to lvl 71, cos i barely play anymore. But I guess, it's an ok game if u sign up for membership...

my best friend at school had the amstrad cpc464 with GREEN SCREEN monitor. i chose to buy the commodore 64 with tape drive at that point in time. we then bought amiga 500s together, then the mighty amiga 1200.

i remeber he still professed that viewing everything on a green screen was preferable to hooking the computer up to the tv as i did with the commodore 64. (i dont think there was a modulator available for the amstrad to allow this anyway)

his love for the green screen monitor still baffles me even now....

i remember other kids at school having

- the spectrum
-xt/at

the amiga was truly a better machine than i.b.m. in its day. the operating system was terrific. the graphics and games were better. and it was neat the way the whole computer was concealed beneath the keyboard.

The games I am best at:

minesweeper. I am world ranked, I've been as high as #45, but I'm now #77, and third in Australia, behind only our own puppubahry and the former world #1.

Tetris. I'm aiming to get 999,999 points on the gameboy version sometime soon, I'm getting not far away.

The games I love:

-Planescape: Torment - this is a fabulous RPG, it feels like it was written by poets and philosophers, not programmers. It is a work of art, and I don't say that lightly. Notwithstanding that, there's plenty of action and fun, not just plot, but I loooove games with good plot and dialogue. For similar reasons, I like the Baldur's gate series.

- Heroes of Might and Magic III - I know there are newer, prettier versions, but this is the game in the franchise that had the magic for me. It's turn-based strategy, so I'm sure many people here would like it ;). Fabulous plot, and lots of numbers, which piques my interest usually.

- Starcraft. It's a classic. I mean seriously. Can't wait 'till the sequel.

- C&C red alert. Also a classic, with some great ideas.

- Black and white. Who doesn't want to play god?

- the Max Payne series. Very stylish and atmospheric.

- Star Trek: A final Unity. As far as I know, one of the only star trek games not to suck

Games that I used to obsess about that I don't play anymore:

- the diablo series. I loved it, but I know that if I play it much more, I'll be tempted to become addicted to it's improvement, world of crack *ahem* warcraft. If they made a world of starcraft, I'd be there so quick it would not be funny.

- x-wing vs tie fighter - I got pretty friggin good at this game.

A new favourite: Kingdom of loathing (http://kingdomofloathing.com). It's a web MMORPG, and wicked funny. It's like a cross between a regular MMORPG and xkcd.com.

You need to finish your score on expert + on intermediate + on beginner must be less than 100 (I got to this point in 2004 with 76, 20 and 3). You need some proof of these games (the most usual way is to play on a special minesweeper clone program that has eliminated a few winmine bugs, and which records mouse movements and clicks and such so a replay file can be created, and to submit these files. Then you have to submit them to the official site, minesweeper.cc, and wait for up to a month for them to ratify it (there are lots of people that try to cheat, so they have to check every one.

I'm currently at 1 on beginner (lucky game, only needed 3 clicks), 14 on intermediate and 52 on expert.

This (http://minesweeper.cc/index.php?page=rules) page tells you which programs are accepted for records.

what do the numbers mean?

Schu
10-07-2009, 07:36 PM
what do the numbers mean?

They mean that in the 8 squares surrounding it, there are x mines, so if you see an 8, which happens roughly 0.1% of the time in expert, that means the square is completely surrounded by mines. The blank squares that open up a bunch of squares? they're technically zeroes, and they all get opened up automatically (and usually cascade on to other nearby zeroes).

So if there's a 7 how do u know which square around it isnt a mine?

Schu

You can't. not from the number 7 alone. Usually you can tell by the other nearby numbers, but sometimes you'd be forced to guess: if your first click on the minesweeper board revealed a 7, you'd have a choice of either going for a 1/8 chance of hitting the right empty space, or clicking someone else that has nothing else (directly) to do with the 7.

Seems hard... so minesweepers partly to do with just luck? Cos the first click would have to be quite random, I just click on one of the corners

Schu

It is somewhat rare that you can play an entire expert game of minesweeper without having to resort to at least one guess (though not impossible, the first click is always guaranteed to be safe, and if you get a decent opening from that, you can often make it though the whole game without a guess.

The difference is, without solving skills, you will face monumental odds of ever finishing a game on expert (like one of those big numbers with lots of big factorials:1) but without any luck, you will still solve, say, one in 100 I guess.

If your only goal is to clear the board the biggest percentage of times from amount of starts, the corner is the right place to start, because it gives you the most chance for an opening, however if you're going for fast times, the middle is the only way to go - bigger openings, centralisation etc.

You've got a lotta minesweeper videos, and they're all so fast! I'd be happy if I could 'survive' difficult level with a time of more than a whole hour

A lot of them aren't my videos, I just put up a bunch by different players, but the one I linked is by me.

36 seconds is the world record for expert, 10 seconds for intermediate (shared by I think 5 different people), 1 second for beginner (shared between at least 100 people, myself included).

What is the chance of getting under 60 secs if you just click randomly over the screen?
 Pretty low!

If you get an extremely easy expert board, then there'll be about 100 squares that you have to click on (if you're only using the left mouse button). There are 99 squares that you'll have to avoid (the mines), and the rest we can ignore for this problem.

So there are 100 good squares and 99 bad squares. The probability of hitting a good square on the first click is then 100/(100+99). If you succeed, then there'll be 99 good squares left and still 99 bad squares. So the probability of succeeding on the second click is 99/(99+99). Keep going on until the last click, when there's only one good square left: 1/(1+99).

Multiply all the probabilities to find the probability of winning the game and you get

100! / (199! / 99!) = 100! * 99! / 199!,

which is about 4 * 10^(-59).

Easier just to learn all the patterns and practise for a few years! :P

Yes I liked Skyrim a lot too. The sort of game you can waste a significant chunk of your life playing, which is what it's all about. :D Looking forward to the Elder Scrolls MMO they are working on too. Diablo 3 seems to do all the world processing on the server side, so you suffer from lag just like you would in an online game. If you're on some form of DSL or better I'd say you'd be fine but I wouldn't play it over dialup or something like that.

I haven't played the board game but all the Civs have a similar feel but add little tweaks here and there. Personally I find Civ 5 a little tedious and prefer to play Civ 4 Beyond the Sword. I've given Civ 5 several goes but always get annoyed by something or other and my preference for Civ 4 is probably more resistance to change than anything fundamental wrong with 5.

Desmond
05-03-2014, 05:58 PM
Civ 5 is the only one I have played so I can't compare with the others. If I find a certain aspect is getting tedious after a while I automate it.

I think it is a very rich game that caters to various playstyles, for example you can go the annihilate everyone route, the diplomatic route, win via a science victory, tourism etc. There is also religion but I pretty much ignore that. ;)
