View Full Version : Teen Forum (was Suggest 'Teens' Forum)

I'd like to humbly propose a 'Teens' forum on Chesschat.

It's not so much that we're swamped with teens, but more that:
- we'd like to be swamped
- we'd be ready for them if they turn up mob-handed
- teen lurkers might be encouraged to sign up
- existing teens can identify themselves to teen lurkers
- teen posters should have no fear of 'fitting in'
- parents can see the 'teen-ness' of it all
- moderation in those areas can be locked down and stop prats like me over-stepping the mark (and giving mods pause for thought) despite best of intentions

Do it! Don't even think about it! Is good. Is Don.

Carry on!

Miranda

haha
good idea!

I just lurk because i'm too lazy to post :)

"mob-handed" ?
Yes, because all the chess teens all over australia are planning an attack on the chesschat forums!

Yeah, good idea Gunner. That would help Tony K find who the other teens in Chess Chat are! Night all.

Hi Miranda

The Squad (admins and mods) will have seen this. They may have even opened a thread in the moderation forum (which we can't see).

They will make the right decision at the right time. They will (are) be cosidering things that haven't been raised and/ or explored fully in this thread.

They will not want to open a thread just because a few people thought it was a good idea at a moment in time. If the idea has (enduring) support, I am sure they will agree.

Are you a junior/ teen? If so, your input will be of great value to them. I know you have posted on this matter, but it is up to you and other junior/ teens to convince them!

Final word. If you do want it and they do provide it - for heaven's sake make sure you use it and encourage others to do so!

Good luck

Howard

Ideas toward the introduction of such a forum.
I would recommend the following:

A logical curfew (say 20:00 - 20:30) to be strictly imposed
Language used by juniors to be strictly monitored
Homework, assignments and other school projects to be completed before juniors indulge in forum participation
Parents to know about the existence of the forum.
Non junior chatters not to be allowed to enter the juniors forum, unless they are invited by juniors (say for a chess lecture, or other related activities) and after permission granted by the administrators.
Topics of discussion or threads of the forum to be approved by the administration

1. Curfew?! You do realise that if there's a curfew, we'll just post on the main forum...
2. How are you going to measure if we've done our homework or not? :P
3. How can you tell who are non-juniors?
4. Parents to know about the existance? My parent's don't even know chesschat exists! Is that really nessecary?
5. Topics of discussion to be approved by the admins? That'll just result in more work, and delays for when we want to post stuff

Too many rules!
I think just making a teen forum and letting it run for a bit would give you an iade of what rules need to be in place. :)

the good thing with the kids coming here, is that they trust the place and feel at home and comfortable! that's a very good and possitive point for the Chess Chat, although i suspect that spending too much time here, would result in neglecting their school work and quality time with their families!
I think using the board in moderation is ok!

Actually I think CC has been in good shape for a year or more. Miranda's arrival has been quite recent and so the sample time may not be long enough for us to have not pulled one of our 'specials'.

Yes good point :)

Perhaps our general drift towards civility has encouraged Miranda to post (she otherwise might not have) so it is a snowball effect.

Kevin Bonham
23-10-2008, 01:14 PM
I'd like it if the word "civil" was left out of this since blatant and biased misuse of the word in the Toolbox has already devalued it to the extent that it would be best eradicated from the entire English language.

Standards of behaviour are generally pretty good here and have been for a long time for the reason that most of the more serious troublemakers have either got themselves banned or else left.

As for the idea that a more friendly environment encourages (or a more hostile environment discourages) more female posters, I have to say there is no real evidence of this on other forums I am on. But I've got no doubt that some of the very worst stuff seen here (years ago now) scared off people of both genders!

Miranda
23-10-2008, 04:30 PM
I think the main reason for women not posting is due to the fact that not many play chess!

And I would've joined CC anyway, no matter if the members were civil or not :P

The Teen forum is a new area created in response to feedback from members.
Cracking idea! Probably mooted by someone ahead of his time ;)

I'd like to throw up a couple of ideas for consideration and discussion:

1. Bullying
I believe that teens are more likely to suffer as a result of some styles of posts that would otherwise be broadly acceptable to adults; spefically I'm referring to the broad umbrella of bullying of the psychological variety.

Camaraderie and a sense of belonging is important to any community. As with adults, teens are capable of ostracising their contemporaries - however IMO they teens are considerably more at risk and vulnerable to the consequences of same. Ofthen this only becomes apparent until too late, when an apparent guise of coping has been maintained.

I acknowledge that teens also have a code of their own and that it's difficult to know what is acceptable and what is not, but in any event I would urge on the side of over-regulation than suffer the consequences of under-regulation.

2. Post count
With the propensity of 'did not', 'did so' type discussions, it's quite foreseeable that post counts could go through the roof. Perhaps post counts could be capped or not counted. Perhaps not.

Carry on!

"Teen forum" A place to talk, socialise and play chess! With other young australian chess enthusiasts!

I think its a Dickie idea.. and i even thought that CL (the first rule of CL is not to talk about CL unless to another CL member) should be for proper chess players (which would mean id get kicked out) and we'd be like mos'ies in the pit outside CL not understanding (whats behind the music of chess) but inside ..sereniety

Make a Teen thread if u want.. and then you can blame global warming for the lack of posts

A few responses to Gunner just to give an indication of how my mod powers might/might not be used here should it be necessary.

1. Bullying
I believe that teens are more likely to suffer as a result of some styles of posts that would otherwise be broadly acceptable to adults; spefically I'm referring to the broad umbrella of bullying of the psychological variety.

Unfortunately, complete misuse of the term "bullying" by the clueless clowns from the toolbox has trashed the word to the extent that it is actually very difficult to apply it to any non-physical situation and still make the slightest sense.

That said I'm well aware of where you're coming from in terms of some younger posters being more fragile if subjected to stirring/baiting/goading/trolling type techniques, and I'll be keeping an eye out for any of this stuff. Especially, there will be very little tolerance for any such behaviour by adults towards younger posters in this section.

2. Post count
With the propensity of 'did not', 'did so' type discussions, it's quite foreseeable that post counts could go through the roof. Perhaps post counts could be capped or not counted. Perhaps not.

If there is any totally inane back and forth stuff that is nothing but deliberate postcount boosting or gets totally repetive we can just delete or lock it at around the point where one of the parties would be entitled to claim a draw. I wouldn't want to make this a non-count section when many posts here will be as thoughtful (or not) as plenty of others on the board, at least not without some way of fining Axiom five posts ever time he copies and pastes.

A cap on how many posts per day a poster could have credited to their count might have merit but is probably not possible within the forum software.

1. Bullying
I believe that teens are more likely to suffer as a result of some styles of posts that would otherwise be broadly acceptable to adults; spefically I'm referring to the broad umbrella of bullying of the psychological variety.
Indeed so—see Lori Drew guilty in MySpace bully trial: Suicide sparked by online abuse (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/11/27/myspace_mother_guilty/) (it was in today's Courier Mail too).

I.e.,a 3-fold repetition, both ways of the {"Yes, you did"/ "No, didn't"} x 3 variety?:)

Which would actually be a 2-fold repetition. ;)

5/4 is a fraction; often called an "improper fraction".

You can also make it into a mixed number - 1 1/4

Or a decimal number - 1.25

Sure, but it detracts a little from the joke, which relies on 5/4 not being a fraction.

Also, I hate mixed fractions. They are monstrosities.

I've only ever seen this as 10 types of people. It took me years before I realised why it was really funny. :wall:

If you are concerned what others may read then dont post anything you wouldnt want others to know.
