What is BoS/Bored of Studies?

Gandalf
19-10-2003, 11:06 PM
What is BoS/Bored of Studies?I knew this would come up sooner or later. :) Bored of Studies is an extremely popular website for NSW - Australia Final year (High School) students. It is a pun on our Board of Studies, and is amazingly useful for notes and past papers. There is also a very large forum, in which at least two members here (myself and Flyin') are moderators. I would recommend it to any NSW high school students (in any grade), but to everyone else it won't do much for you. On that note, the Higher School Certificate examinations begin in... 10 hours and 13 minutes! Time to go.

Yeah . . . I figured that. I'm just testing everything now. But one thing seems to be missing: a reset function. What would even be neater is an undo.

AR

01-01-2004, 05:58 PM
I dont understand why we would need a reset button. On older boards, when there were reset buttons, the only type of feedback about them is negative. Usually people write long posts, and accidentally hit reset, which effectively wipes out all your hard work, without notice. Possibly we could make a reset button that confirms if you want to reset, but at the moment, its not required. Just highlight your post and hit delete.

What would even be neater is an undo.

CTRL Z is the built in Undo function in Windows.

Gandalf
02-01-2004, 04:18 AM
Yes, "Reset" is a very dangerous function in boards like this. What's worse though is people who don't know how to hilight text and think the only way to clear the text box is to click beside the last character and hold down "Backspace"...

That's right. In fact I find the search facility of the new board much more powerful.

antiX,

Check out the Search button (third from left at the top of frame).

The easiest way to go is to put an asterisk in the author prompt and sort on descending posting date.

Much around with the other options until it behaves the way you like it.

No, it wouldn't be because of that.

There are a few possibilities. It probably has something to do with cookies. Try clearing all the cookies then logging in. Make sure cookies are enabled on the browser in the first place.

Can you try to log in via another username on chesschat.org?

Also, try registering / logging in into other forums. By doing this we can determine if the problem is with the client or server.

Garvin reported that the added emoticon goes to the bottom of the post, which it should.

The reason it is not adding is probably because you have javascript disabled, or you have higher security settings than needed, or maybe your browser is just too old.

Just click more smilies, and type in the required values manually.

Ah yes, but K. only said the thread was closed for a particular reason, not related to cancellation. Thus it is still operative.
K. as admin. could have of course updated his advert. rather than burying an amendment notification in another thread. But he hasn't; more evidence it still stands.

No it isnt.
The more logically reason is that the thread is simply there, not that it is still operative.
Unless STML explicitly states its back on then it is reasonable to take his post #202 above as being accurate.

STML mate, I note that you said these words to our good old mate Mr starter (in the shoutbox):

"My software is not broken, so there is no need for repair. Btw, I am not an end-user. I am a software developer. But there is one switch that needs to be flicked. It's the switch controlling your brain and it's currently set to 'OFF'. PM me if you need assistance."

I couldn't help but notice such disdainful aplomb in the bolded text. I wonder, too, if you sort of speak with a stiff upper lip accent - as that seems most suitable. You know, my mind just wanders off like this.

By the way, did you happen to make a mental note of Mrs Canning's remark: "Overall a totally useless web-site" (referring to www.mtbullerchess.com)? What did you make of it?

I have a term for you STML, sir. User-centric.

That's okay, Canning is entitled to his/her opinion, and the website is not perfect. I was planning to do all the work mid year, when all the hassle happened and the main organisers had changed. Things changed from there, I haven't had much time at all.

But please note:

1) You haven't seen the full capability of the site yet; Automated functions means you can basically have results, next round pairings, etc posted up within minutes of them being confirmed. With ChessLib, you get much more powerful search functions on the games published. You can search by moves, positions etc.

2) The site recorded many thousand dollars in sales, please tell me which other (australian) tournament chess site has done this.

3) I can only publish information which is given to me. I've published everything that has been given to me.

4) The sponsors or people helping george with the brochure were not co-operative at all.

If you want to criticise the site, then you are welcome to do so. However, you need to be more constructive in your criticisms.

"Overall a totally useless web-site" is not acceptable.

What did you not like about the site? Is it the design? Is it the lack of information or features? Is it loading slow? Please be more specific so I can actually fix it.

Thank you for your concern

Hello, a few comments about the website:

Positives:

1) Clear and well placed facility for online signup - no wonder the site has recorded so much in sales.

2) Loads quickly and navigation within the site is fast and easy.

3) Nice menu system so you know exactly where you want to go.

4) Great info and pics of the Schools entered in the Schools Championships!

Negatives:

1) (from Mrs Canning's Post) - No information about results or pairings of the schools championships. This is a site about Mt Buller Chess so should contain all relevant info about the Schools, Juniors and Aus Championships. As an example, the Calvia Olympiad website covered the entire chess festival very well, not just the main tournamemt.

This, however, is an issue for the organisers, who should provide that information, not Skip.

2) (Also from Mrs Canning's Post) - Lack of info about amenities at Buller - activities, shops, etc. I believe this should also have been hunted down by the organisers and placed as a link on the site. If there are no amenities, that should be made clear as well.

3) I believe the colour scheme is a little bland - perhaps too much grey? (no pun intended) The website is a major marketing tool and I think it should be more colourful. The Mercure logo stands out well but perhaps more colours in the borders or background?

4) On the 'Information' part of the site, under Lidums... there is a list of links starting with 'Arbiters'. This contains vital information but I believe could be better displayed. There are more than 10 separate things to click on, but they are set out in 2 lines, maybe if they were presented vertically on the page it would be more obvious. Or perhaps giving that part of the page more colour might do the trick.

Hope this has been constructive.

W.E.

K....that is the second misrepresentation of me in a week. Your text, which I have bolded above is an obvious exaggeration...that is OK, it is just a figure of speech. But I can recall using the expression (software option flicker) once, and even there

The reference in the shoutbox last night was to one function only, not maintenance of the bb.
Do you want to withdraw 'idiot' and 'tart' as referring to me? :(

The site that is currently up now is using the second design. The first design was much more colourful and fancy, but george requested that it be made very simple. In a way, I feel this more simpler design is much better.

Hey Karthick mate, just reopen the whole Best Post thingie mate. What's the big deal anyway? Think of it as a goodwill gesture.

You can have good PR and ACE will promote themselves. I must admit, there have been some really good ones this year - especially from Libby.

I think the best post competition is a bit of a farce. Without due process and with so many posts made in the year, it is going to come down to luck.

If we are going to have some sort of contribution prize, how about most valuable poster award? People can vote for a poster who they think contributes the most over the course of the whole year.

Whether it be Starter for his metrics and Boxhill updates, FG with his controversial posts and information on the MCC, The Wise Man, Kevin, etc with updates on local events. Bill with rating informations. Matt with his low key question of established wisdon, etc, etc, etc.

It may not be much better, but IMHO I think it would mean more than a "best post" award and would encourage the right sort of consistent contribution to the online community.

PS Even you would be in the running Amiel, with your unparalleled photographic coverage of a number of events and points of general chess interest.

Hehe, I suppose it would be a bit of fun although meaningless but I'm game. Why not have best categories too? We can make it into a Chesskit Academy Awards for best drama queen, biggest gossip, best non-chess/unmod poster, most controversial, most informative, biggest whinger and even the dumb and dumber award can be included.

Tsk tsk Baz
I suspect this is one of your mischievous tongue-in-cheek posts (BD...what about adding this category to your list to give Barry a target).

There was due process, originally.
K. had the mods lined up to adjudicate. Could not be fairer than that.

No need to complexify things Baz; K.'s original design was intended to find the gems.

Not tongue in cheek at all and I was only suggesting one "category"

My last parapgraph was just some potential candidates with some justification as to how they might fulfil the entry requirement.

Apologies mate. I really did think you were tongue-in-cheek, on that post.

Hey, I now take heart from what you say, and I will no longer hold back in the metrics and competitive index stuff. I didn't realise it was so appreciated.
Thanks for the encouragement. :uhoh:

I wonder if there is a way to see the most regular posters in a particular forum.. You can search all posts in a certain forum using the search function but it doesn't give an overall figure that's displayed.. would be interesting to know how many posts people have in non-chess for example.

Well I'm sure it would suit TP.. ;)

Actually it's weird using CC back on my home comp, everything's so big! I'm used to higher resolution on other comps but I like 800x600 on my comp for other programs.

Just a reminder K:

Regarding the top posters in each forum, the queries run up the loads of the server like anything. So without a DB restructure, I cannot add it. I will restructure the DB and bring everything back to normal once 3.1.0 is released

OK, until then I suppose..

BTW I agree, the layouts are a bit clunky, I probably prefer the old style.

I notice that those that are set invisible have a last visit date in the members list of when they first joined the BB. That wasnt the case prior to the update.

re: the ads though, I don't care if you make money by putting them on but it was more a question of layout.. like would be easier if it was a popup cos then our browsers could just block it.
