I've gotta say, did anyone even notice that David drew with Jan Smeets? That's a fair effort just on its own, but have a look at the opening he used:

Unfortunate finish to the tournament for David, losing his last 2 games. I detect a little bit of a pattern here, performing heroically against higher-rated GMs, but then losing (unexpectedly, seems to me) against other well-performing IMs at the front end of the tournament. Is it perhaps an unintentional letting down of his guard against lower-rated opposition? He's clearly GM strength most of the time. Or is my assessment not supported by the evidence (I've based it on my recollection of the past 3-4 tournaments he's played in).

i think it's just a case of him trying too hard to pass that magic 2500 mark

I agree there is a pattern here (don't ask for examples now).
He will lift against higher rated opponents and take foot off the accelerator against weaker opponents.I think it is psychological. It might have something to do with the weight of expectation.
On a positive note,he can overcome this with assistance.

I think you'll find that some of the supposedly weaker opponents are IMs with ratings equal to, or higher than, David's. I know in a previous recent event he played at least one IM rated over 2500.
