hi,
I started playing chess competively this year, going to my local chess club and competing in the NSW Raipid Play.

Anyway I'm waiting for my rating to be generated.
I was just wondering what is involved in this process.
can it be explained in simple terms, I'm not interested in the mathematics of it or anything.

so far I have played 14 'classical time control' games. with 4 wins, 3 draws and 7 loses. two of these games were agaisnt a unrated player.

Hi Max and welcome back to active Chess!
Can you be more specific, when exactly you played those games? Because if they were all into ONE rating period you would have a rating published, since you exceeded the number of games required (9)
Cheers and good luck

I probably played 7 games before september.
Then have played seven afterwards.

just assume you played them all at the one tourney for this example

you take your games against rated opponents
you get their average rating
you get your scoring percentage
ie how many out of 12 (not 14) converted to percentage
there is a table used to convert percentage scores into rating differences
http://www.fide.com/official/handbook.asp?level=B0210 shows such a table
let's say you got 5 1/2 out of 12
your opponent's average was 1500
your percentage score is 45%
according to the chart you subtract 36
1500 - 36 = 1464

note that if you got a perfect score you can't get a rating at all
