Can anyone give me info on how to setup a basic forum?

Aaron, you'll need some (cyber) space - somewhere to park your forum.
Then you'll need some (free) software - the forum shell itself. I use phpBB (http://www.phpbb.com/). Chesschat uses vBulletin. Both have strengths. Both good.
It's basically a case of downloading the (free) shell software to your server (your cyberspace).

-------------------------------

You will need to ensure that your cyberspace is enabled for the language your software uses (in Scene Magazine's case (phppBB), it's 'mySQL'). If this sounds a bit much, you'll need the help of a tech or have a savvy ISP (Internet Service Provider / Host).

-------------------------------

After that, you will be largely on your own as 'admin', but either of the two that I have cited will have very good forums for people in exactly your situation.

Good luck.

The easiest way may be to set it up in the webspace you get with your ISP. If this is the case for you then you would be well advised to see if your ISP has a user forum and you can ask the members there. They will have lots of handy hints about setting it up exactly the set up that you will be doing.

In fact even if you are setting up your own server there will be specific details to do with your ISP which need to be taken into account and so your ISP user forum (if it exists) would be a most valuable resource.

If your ISP doesn't have a user forum then you should check out www.whirlpool.net.au as there will probably be forums on that site which would act as the de facto user forum.

Personally I have also used phpBB and mySQL both via an ISP and on my own servers. They are both pretty easy to configure and if you have any questions you can float them this way too.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help people.
The news on the forum is... it was manifested by someone else.

And EE, that is too cryptic even for me. Well done old chap.
