Ok, I'm back and am in the mood to give out more strategic chess puzzles.

Here white played 13.Nb3! Your goal is to explain that move. I'll post the (long) explanation after you've tried. Good luck!

Hi andytoh,

great idea!, and thank you for posting the puzzle.
I think white played 13.Nb3 for a few reasons:

1. To prevent black from playing nc5. in order for black to open the d file for his rook he will now have to play Nb6 or Nb8 - which if he does this knight can then move to c5-d3 and close the file.
2. Once the knight has moved it allows room for his queen's bishop to develop.
3. white can contest for the D file with his rooks.

Not very good at this - but I gave it my best shot!, im sure I can learn a lot from these puzzles.

I'm glad you said more than simply point #2. Pretty good, but the main reason why Black wants to play ...Nc5 is not because of clearing the d-file for his Rook. Also, White does not necessarily want to play Rd1 because there is a drawback to that move.
