View Full Version : Fritz 10 - DVD only?

I was going to buy Fritz 10, but read somewhere that it can only be run from the DVD--can someone tell me if this is correct (a deal breaker for me...)?

Also, can anyone recommend some software for me? I want an engine that gives me very powerful, in-depth analysis, but I also want customizable strength, i.e. dumbing down, for practice play (which I read Fritz 10 has...). I am also interested in the free membership to playchess.com that is included with Fritz, I just don't want to insert the DVD every time I use Fritz....

Hi Tangobob,

The Fritz programs are generally sold as once installed there is no need for the disk each time, though the machine may nag you to insert it every so often.

It is on DVD only as far as I am aware, or at least my version is, so if your machine will not play with DVD's then I am afraid that you are out of luck.

Fritz 8 also runs with limited playing strength, and is on CD, so perhaps consider that

Take care and God Bless, Macavity

Thanks for the quick and informative reply. (And sorry for the unclear question: my computer plays DVD's, I just want to install it on my hard drive and run it from there, which it sounds like I can do, with a few not-too-frequent exceptions.)

Fritz 10 is on DVD for reasons of capacity - to hold all the games and history and other stuff that won't fit on a CD.

If you want a playing program on CD then try Shredder or one of the other programs without the historical stuff!

DVD readers are actually very cheap, I'd suggest that you pick up one.

It can be bought new from the UK on eBay for about AU $55, including postage. The UK title is Fritz Chess 10 (http://www.excalibur-publishing.com/fritz10.htm).

If you look hard enough, there are ways of getting all the fritz and chessbase databases free. Then again, you'd be cheating all the programmers and those involved of a payrise - not that any of them need it. Not that I'd do such a thing...
