Hi Ax, just checking if you'd forgotten it's your move.

too strong!.......outdone again by pure calculation, ......when the tree of options becomes wide and deep, i fail miserably.........it is this most fertile soil where i suffer dry rot! its no good just loving the creativity of the opening phase of the game, painting the basis for the most 'wonderful art',in chess, if you cant put in the final touches to make it 'real'............and it is in this fundamental aspect of achieving what looks to me like an 'optically' beautiful position, that leads me astray to "brush over" and lose sight of the true picture.

i could not or would not see that my Q would become trapped, im scolding myself for lazy application to pure calculation.

my hope is that one day, i can finally defeat you.
with great respect,

Thanks. You gave it a really good shake in that game. I felt a bit guilty for the artless what-would-Kramnik-do copout move 16.Qa4 which basically gave you the choice between swapping queens with equality and a potentially critical tempo loss ... but after looking pretty hard I just could not make anything better work, I didn't think I had time and thought I was probably worse if I did anything else. So I think your dynamic play early in the game equalised nicely but then you overpressed it.

After that it was a big bad mess but given that you couldn't win the rook cleanly (though I didn't actually see that until a few moves out) I suspect that I was better because I had so many defenders around my king while on your q-side there is nobody home. In the exchange sac line that you played your pieces got in each others' way a bit, I think you really needed to try to land Q on h3, N on g4 and do damage on h2, but I wonder if after the Q retreat it was all a move too slow. Not sure yet.

Not sure yet.Yes, Qc8 was a bit over hopeful..........btw, i drew with sam chow in a 15min game(2yrs ago or so) in this opening........his comment afterwards was ,just "i always thought white had the tempo in that line"! (i thought to myself, maybe, but you're not a bloody database!)....you played more actively ,than he did though.

I thought I might have an edge at one stage before your queen retreated but you pretty quickly disabused me of that notion. :D However I like playing those styles of English positions whether I have an edge or not (usually I just want to build up and lash out with f4 around move 8 to 10 but I couldn't get it in OK in this game, and then you 0-0-0d anyway).

Might have another couple of games sometime in May if you like, if neither of us is too busy. You very nearly beat me in the second possum game so you'll probably get me eventually. But I'm harder to kill than a cockroach, except when I do it to myself, so it may take a while!
