I have started this more for posterity than anything else. However it would be nice to think this thread can act as a conduit for those who have pondered changing their nics, just as a fancy. You do exist don't you?

Right now, I would be delighted with the handle "TWO DOGS"

Basil

There was another nic that I requested some months ago. I forget what it was. If only this thread had been in existence then

$50 HCDs to anyone who can assist with the recollection.

*LOL* No, it was a composite of a number of words (largely derogatory) that included "TWIT". I backed out when Baz said I had to do a 6 stretch.

The banned user list, consisting overwhelmingly of spammers with most of the rest being hackers or hydras, now contains users whose handles start with every letter of the alphabet except 0.

Thanks to those that assisted me with this (http://www.chesschat.org/showthread.php?t=6314)

The decision was always going to be something I had to feel comfortable with for 6 months   That's what Baz told me, anyway.

I confess to a personal hankering for 'Captain Underpants' & 'Ploppy'. But in the end, the popular support wasn't there. But much thanks to Brian, EE and Aaron for their discerning good taste!

I also appreciated the late arrival of 'Hacksaw'. Thanks Sunshine.

But ultimately, given the aptness and popular vote ... wait for it, wait for it ...

And while we're waiting, special thanks to George for his creative and considered reply

Basil

Hi Jon. I see the cause for confusion. My "Lefty" at #46 followed directly from your #45. The two posts are unrelated.

Yes, this thread is a musing box for possible future handles for me, or indeed for anyone, but generally, (always the case for me), the offerings as posted refer to the author.

Have 5 HCDs for not being a Lefty.
Have another 5 HCDs for definitely not being a Lefty.
Have a further 5 HCDs for "whom".
Have a final 5 HCDs for looking the other way while I persistently commence sentences with conjunctions and prepositions.

Paying $20 HCDs right there, folks.

I believe the correct procedure is to request the change of Barry via PM (with 20 HCDs in the envelope), or you may care to try the official form (http://www.chesschat.org/showpost.php?p=153371&postcount=19) from post #19 of this thread.

Paying $20 HCDs right there, folks. For an Arsenal supporter, Gunner, you are very generous! In addition, you generally make a good stand for the accuracy of the English language. I can excuse the odd "And " at the start of a sentence. I have even been known to do it myself...

One of my first threads on this BB was "Best Insults On The BB". Your insult would have made it there! Alas Kevin killed it almost immediately.

The site admin is physically able to change handles at will. However he was cautioning me against changing handles on a whim. He may be busy when the subsequent request(s) come to change back/ again.

He may of course chose to be more or less tolerant with other posters. Or then again, not!

Falstaff (as offered up by Rincewind)

This was inspired by your reference to your shout

However, given the Gunners' precarious position at THE TOP of the ladder, perhaps I should remain silent prefering the better part of valour.

Which was (indirectly it seems) inspired by the following line from Henry IV pt I, spoken by Falstaff.

The better part of valour is discretion; in the which better part I have saved my life.

Hi all, and especially mods.

I have been asked (very nicely) to change my handle, due to confusion between myself and Jono being easily possible, and actually occurring.

Therefore, mods, please change my handle to "Adamski". I can't see anywhere in Chess Chat where I can do this myself.

Is it sufficient just to post this here or is a more official request required?
Thanks,

Hi Jono/Adamski/Jon
Why Adamski? How about asking for public submissions?! I did.Years ago there was a Polish IM called Adamski, and (as an Adams) I always liked his name. Even more so when I started to play the Polish Opening (1. b4) - less often nowadays except v weaker players. So from now on you can call me Adamski. (I did consider Michael Adams, but thought that could be considered pretentious, since he is a Super GM.) And it's good night from me (Jono A) and maybe it's good night from him (Adamski) too...{This time I have used the apostrophe correctly.:) }

A man comes to a rabbi for a talk and during the conversation asked

At the time young woman comes to see him and asks: "I am getting married tonight. What should I wear?". Rabbi answers: "It'd easy. Whatever you do, you are going to get ######". Then turns to a man: "Same applies to you"

Maybe the plural of Nexu (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Nexu)

Although more like just Nexus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nexus_(comics))

Yes I was aware of a few possiblities (more besides the ones you suggested) which is why I asked.

Jesus said "I am the Alpha and the Omega, The Beginning and the End". From the last book of the Bible, Revelation. But you just want to be first in alpha searches don't you? In that case why not ask for 0000 (assuming username searches work here by returning numbers before letters).:hmm:

Revelation 1:8 "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty."The alphabet thing is common education theme, e.g. "ABC learning", or "A to Z education". I am guessing the idea of the alpha omega thing was to do that type of thing, but reference the religion at the same time.

But you just want to be first in alpha searches don't you?Nope.

User names should be between 3 and 15 characters in length, inclusive. So perhaps if the request was to change the user name to "one" or "any" then that would be ok and they are indefinite articles of sorts.

It's possible in the sense that should I or anyone else with admin privileges wish to change it there would be nothing stopping them. However the general policy is to have a 6 months gap between name changes so that people aren't changing so frequently that less regular posters have trouble keeping up and also to help deter frivolous handle changes.

Due to an impending change in my work circumstances, combined with the death of most of my snails, I am in the market for a name change here. 'tis but 3 months since my last change, so I am in the hands of the admin/mods in this regard.

It is not an arduous job in terms of work involved in changing names. So the six month limit is somewhat arbitrary. However, I would like to see users even one user change their handle so often as other posters have trouble keeping track of who's who. So unless you have a clear and present cause to change I suggest waiting out the next 3 months as a courtesy to your fellow poster.

The trouble with making an exception is that you usually end up making the new rule by reason of precedence. :)

Picked it up to look at first trap and who is the first player to feature (as he was White)? None other than my namesake Polish IM J Adamski! A game that he lost to GM Geller in the King's Indian Defence in 1968 Olympiad. Also curious is that Geller beat another player, the Danish player Holm, 2 rounds later, with exactly the same variation!!
There was yet a third time; shortly after the Olympiad, Geller went to the Karseladz Memorial tourney in Gori, where he caught Cikovani as well! Long before the rapid spread of game we have today.

Jan Adamski vs Efim Geller, Lugano Ol., 1968 (http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1049344)
Sejer Holm vs Efim Geller, Lugano Ol., 1968 (http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1049345)

This had started after Geller lost the previous year to Reshevsky (http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1049258), and couldn't pull this combo off because Reshevesky had lost a tempo with Be3-g5. Home analysis worked out when the trap would work. (From his excellent game collection, The Application of Chess Theory, 1984).

But closer to home, see the same trap work out in Peter Wykeham Stuart vs Arthur Pomeroy, NZ Champs, 1985 (http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1433074)—I believe you were there.

Many thanks, Jono. Terrific stuff. I appreciate the research. Not surprising I guess that others were caught, but in the same tournament two rounds later is hard to believe! And, yes I was there when Stuart played Pomeroy. I knew Arthur particularly well. As a school-boy he stayed with me for Otago-Southland School Pupils. Still plays in Wellington, I believe. Indeed, didn't he play there when you and I did ?

Hi Jono and once again thanks for the very good information. However, could you please fix this link? It appears to be broken!

You're most welcome. Indeed, Prof. Pomeroy would have been in Wellington when both of us were. He's the only one who stayed there; a leading Classical scholar at Victoria Uni who has won teaching awards (http://www.victoria.ac.nz/Classics/staff/arthur_pomeroy/career_summary.html). I didn't realize that your connection goes that far back.

That link gives me an idea for my next signature line (when I'm sick of Mark Twain).

Holm resigned on move 12! I have posted the foillowing Kibitz on Chess Games.com to the Pomeroy win. Thanks again to Jono for pointing me to the existence of more info on this fascinating (if simple) trap in the Averbakh KID:

In this game in the New Zealand Championship, Arthur Pomeroy caught Peter Stuart in a version of the famous trap that GM Efim Geller successfully sprung 3 times! Against IM Jan Adamski (Poland), Sejer Holm (Denmark, who resigned on move 12 recognising the position from the Adamski game)) and Cikovani. The first 2 games were both in the Lugano Olympiad 1968 - the Holm game only 2 rounds after the Adamski game. Holm recognised the position after move 12 from the Adamski game and then stopped the clock, 0-1! See Geller's, The Application Of Chess Theory, 1984, game 56 v Adamski, and J B Howson, 200 Modern Chess Traps in the Fianchetto Openings, 1970, very first trap!

hmm if I only had the energy to work out what that is all about.. it would probably be goodIt all started as an interesting (to me) coincidence that I should pick up a newly acquired 1970 (even descriptive notation) chess book and the very first player to feature in the book should be my handle namesake, Adamski. With Jono's post I got interested to look into it a bit more. And it turns out to be quite a story!
