Axiom, do you want to play 2.f3 or 2.d3 d5 3.f3? I'm happy with either (if 2.f3 I will play ...d5 anyway).

...Nc6 is a rather un-Frenchlike idea actually, eg you see it in the Guimard (1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2 Nc6) but that is a pretty odd line and I certainly wouldn't play it in a hurry. However in the case of the Possum I think there are points to playing that way rather than say an immediate ...c5. Possibly I am too influenced by the setup I expect my opponent to adopt - we will see.

(just a couple of points for the new students of the possum. note 1. the formation e4 d3 f3, this is known as either the possum claw or possum point, and point 2. 4.Be3 , following the possum principle of protecting g1-a7 diagonal, vital.)

This is not novel in openings entailing f3.

In Schiller's "Unorthodox Chess Openings" the possum is discussed under "Barnes Opening" as a move order 1. f3 e5
2. e4 Nf6
3. Nf6

etc

Schiller gives ther plan of g3, Nh3, Nf2, Bg2 etc as a white set up as a sideline. This formation is in his analysis " ridiculous development by white". White "can choose from among a number of shady and disreputable plans".

More of this in the future please everyone. Respect.

Nice work, Ax.I assume this is the real you, and not the bollocks to which we were submitted in May :)

Not necessary. Somebody remind me of this for the July HADBBAs, please.

Thanks very much for the game. I was actually a bit concerned about 13.f4 while my knight was reorganising itself. If I took on f4 (which I intended) it seemed I would have to play carefully to avoid you eventually making something of the half-open f-file positionally, and also that you still had quite a flexible game. Once you delayed f4 long enough for me to get my knight back to an effective square I liked my position much more.

yes ,i agree, not taking on f4 surprised me a bit ,you did well to avoid inferior lines.

i would be happy to have one last crack at the french with a mainline possum, with quieter kside play ......if you could be bothered kb?
