If anyone would like a game, I'm happy to play. You can choose your colour.

Sure. A queen-pawn opening ... I should've guessed!

Yes, I believe you might be right on that. I will have a look at this when I get home from work tonight, as I haven't played the Black side of a Catalan before. Wasn't this a favourite of Korchnoi's?

Take your time if you want to; that's ok.

I am no expert on it - I have just played it a few times against Fritz [mostly as white].

I first came across it in a book by Karpov about all the games that Karpov lost. Karpov was black [from memory] and won [his vengeance was included also!]

All I know is that black has two main ways to go: open or closed.

I am torn between a Benoni and a regular Catalan ... since I have never played against the latter I should give it a try:

Into the dark and dangerous waters of the catalan we go! :) Into a land of weird positional and strategic beasts with big teeth :D

 I could almost feel the board shake as the knight landed on the board.

J'adoube ... (as I position the knight carefully in the centre of the square and survey the board with a jaundiced eye). ;)

You have 2 pawns.
I have the centre and the good diagonal for the bishop.

Let's see how it goes :D

I spent about 1/2 an hour last night playing on from this position ... my assessment is that the two pawns should win (although in a couple of lines you have nice 'tricks' to play on me which can make my life awkward for a while). As the Goodies once said of a sighting of the Loch Ness Monster: "Of course, I could-a bin mistaken!".

Game so far:

1. d4 Nf6
2. c4 e6
3. g3 d5
4.Bg2 d5:c4
5. Nf3 c6
6. Ne5 b5
7. a4 Nd5
8. a4:b5 c6:b5
9. Nc3 Bb4
10. 0-0 b4:c3
11. b2:c3 d5:c3

So my next move is:

12. Qc2

I think that I have misplayed the opening by missing the zwizchenzug of e4 at move 11. I don't think I have enough compensation [centre, 2 bishops, better development etc] for 2 pawns; I would have if it were only 1 pawn.

Yes, 2 pawns is a lot to make up ... my next move:

12...Nd5

qpawn

Yes, not only is it a significant deficit to be 2 pawns down but also black always has the option, even if things go wrong, of returning a pawn for a clear plus of a pawn up in an ending. Those 3 pawns on the queenside would also be a mac truck if they got going as well.

But I am still happy with the catalan; it would be a task for black to meet it OTB if he/she hadn't seen it before and white knew the lines.

I was so occupied with my CCLA chess games, aircraft engineering, the thics of animals, and computer game design, that this game slipped out of my mind. But I agree that it is interesting. Last night I had a look for about an hour and I think that although white has an initiative for a long time in some lines, that with sound play black should clamber out at least a pawn ahead.

But let's see :D

qpawn

15. e4

Black has good replies to this and all other white moves at 15. But this one produces the most complications.
