Rd 1: five draws. At least they weren't pathetic 20 move draws.

Perhaps because they're using the "no short draws" as well. Sisniega wrote in Daily Dirt: "The time control will be 100 minutes for the entire game, plus 30 seconds increment per move. This was done to accommodate the Sofia-Mtel, "no short draw" rules. The players basically favored these rules, as long as the time control did not imply six to seven hour games each day."

1 Vallejo Pons, Francisco - GM 2650 ESP 6.5
Ponomariov, Ruslan - GM 2723 UKR 6.5
3 Nakamura, Hikaru - GM 2644 USA 6.0
4 Domínguez, Leinier -GM 2638 CUB 5.5
5 Bruzón, Lázaro - GM 2650 CUB 5.0
6 Volokitin, Andrei - GM 2665 UKR 4.5
7 Cheparinov, Ivan - GM 2625 BUL 4.0
8 Karjakin, Sergey - GM 2660 UKR 3.5
9 León, Manuel - IM 2428 MEX 2.0
10 Felgaer, Rubén - GM 2607 ARG 1.5

Poor ol' Karjakin had a pretty terrible tournament. I expected him to be in the top three at least, especially after his strong Wijk!

It's interesting to see half of the Ukrainian Olympiad team in this event. Ponomariov will be the old man of the team outside of Ivanchuk.
