Using windows xp, does anyone know how to activate the checkdisk utility?Go to my computer, select the hard disk and right click on properties. Then select the tools tab and click on check now in error checking. If you are doing this on your boot disk and you select "Automatically fix file system errors", Windows XP will not actually run chkdsk at this time but will do so at the next restart of the machine. XP may also do this on non boot disks.

You can also do a chkdsk by starting a command propmt and typying chkdsk at the prompt. If you type chkdsk c: /f that is the same as selecting "Automatically fix file system errors" above and will behave the same.

Note it is possibly for chkdsk running as a command prompt without the /f flag to tell you there are errors when in fact there really are none. Of course the only way to be sure is to then run it with the /f falg and when you restart the machine see if chkdsk actually fixes anything.

fsck /dev/hd0 works on mine.

BTW why the question in the first place? More thunderstorms in Brisbane?

All good. But the Forum Tools dropdown menu seems to not work. Not under IE anyway.

Seems to work now, though.
