Raymond Song put in an excellent performance. 6/11 in that field is really quite something. His four losses were to players rated more than 300 points higher. His two draws were to players rated more than 200 points higher. Performance rating was around 2320. I cannot understand the people that would make a kid like Raymond wait another two years to play in a tournament of this calibre.

I make Moulthun's performance rating around 2306, despite the fact that he played Song and Obst who are both probably under-rated.

I think Song will pick up about 50 FIDE rating points, and Ly about 30.

Bill, great job!

One question though. Isn't it true that January FIDE ratings are used for this competition, rather than the october ones?

Since it began before the January ratings were released, I believe the Obtober ratings are used.

Since it began before the January ratings were released, I believe the Obtober ratings are used.

This contradicts to what Charlz was saying.

Edit: He was saying that october ratings are used for pairings only and actual calculations are to be done using january ratings.

I'm pretty sure that's wrong.

As an example if you check out Topalov's January rating calculations on the FIDE website you will see that his world Championship results from San Luis were calculated based on his July rating of 2788 because the event started prior to the release of the October FIDE ratings on 27/9/2006.

The October FIDE ratings are definitely the ones to be used for a tournament starting in December.
The Swiss Perfect ratings changes are really just a rough guide, as the program not only uses a 10 K factor for those under 2400 (when it should be 15 or even 25 for newish players) but it also ignores the 336 rule, adjuting players up or down if they are rated more than 336 points above or below their opponent.

I used the option in Swiss Perfect to use the FIDE 350 rule so theoretically that shouldnt be an issue, however as you noted Swiss Perfect does not allow multiple K factors so I was left with no choice but to choose one.
I used a K of 10 because for those that know the FIDE K factor rules they could easily multiple the points by either 1.5 or 2.5 for K's of 15 or 25 respectively.

Thanks, Bill - I stand corrected about Swiss Perfect and the 336/350 rule.

Have moved discussion largely related to selections policy to the "culture of selection" thread.

The following list gives performance relative to rating for all competitors, using ACF ratings. I don't know where one sets the bar for "remarkable" but anything +100 and above over 11 rounds of such a tough event is very good indeed.

Song +234, Smerdon +224, Ly +159, Pyke +140, Moylan +113, Guthrie +77, Obst +73, Smirnov +64, Rogers +62, Schmaltz +39, Xie +38, Chandler +35, Wallis +30, Lane +12, Humphrey +10, Goldenberg +5, Canfell -6, Solomon -11, Bjelobrk -29, Johansen -34, Bird -36, Lakner -72, Booth -79, Ftacnik -142, Zhao -142, Levi -150, Frame -174, Dougherty -189, Wohl -193, Caoili -247.
