Hi all, any idea why windows xp randomly starts the hard drive chugging away doing stuff when you aren't even using the computer, ie it is idle and just the screen saver is on? What is it up to? On the computer mentioned, I have the original XP not SP2 and there is no indexing service for the drive, so its not that.

Try running Task Manager on a fairly slow update (i.e. every 30 seconds) ... then next time you hear the drive start up, switch to Task Manager and see, in the next update, what apps have consumed resources ... it'll have to be one of them!

Task Manager is disabled.

Via policies I presume? Are we talking about a corporate network computer here, or a home-based PC? If the system administrator has locked things down then your options may be very limited.
