Another weak as ditch water ACT tournament started a few weeks ago. It is the Belconnen Club Championships - won last year by Milan Grcic.

The Belconnen Club Championship started last night with a reasonably large field and after late entries will probably be the biggest club event in Canberra this year. Up to three half-point byes are available for those entering late; please be there a little before the starting time of 7:30pm for updating the computer.

On the subject of byes, next week is a long weekend so some existing entrants will be away - please advise as early as possible if you are one of them and haven't done so already.

Nothing esepcially dramatic happened in the first round, with only one half-upset. The hard games started early, though, with Junta Ikeda and Edward Xing, who finished equal second and equal fourth in the ACT Championship, meeting on the top board.

The results are below and the full table can be seen at

http://www.netspeed.com.au/ianandjan/IansPage/

A provisional draw will be circulated later when there is a better picture of who will be unavailable.

Round 3 of the Belconnen Chess Club Championship was played last night. The tournament position is still fluid with the top seeds mainly occupying the high spots and most lost ground being to half-point byes. Leading scores

3 - Rout, Ali
2 - G. Oliver, S. Oliver, J. Ikeda, Guo-Yuthok, Neeman, Sreetharan, Hoang, Wicks

People who have been on school holidays or otherwise engaged can join in next week on three half-point byes; be sure to arrive before the start of play. Current players requiring byes should advise Jenni Oliver or me with as much notice as possible. Jenni will circulate a provisional draw wid-week.

I should be on 1.5 as well (all the others are). However as DOP I can assign myself what I like (oh the power). I use myself as the bye putting myself in when there are an odd number and out when needed. However I prefer to lurk at the bottom end of the field and have no desire to play someone on 1.5 points.

Round 4 of the Belconnen Chess Club Championship featured the unusual spectacle of two adults on Board 1 for the second consecutive week. The game was otherwise unremarkable and after several other but more combative draws on the top boards ten players are within half a point of the lead. Top scores -

3 - J. Ikeda, Neeman, Rout, Ali
3 - S. Oliver, G. Oliver, Hoang, Brown, Sreetharan, Ninchich

At the mid-point of the Belconnen CC championship a sole leader emerged for the first time with Junta Ikeda winning an interesting game against me while a less interesting draw was played between the other two joint leaders.

Andrew Brown scored an upset win against Kishore Sreetharan to move into equal second with several others. Leading scores:

4 - J. Ikeda
4 - G. Oliver, Brown, Hoang, Ali, Neeman
3 - Rout, Guo-Yuthok, Yuan, Grcic

There was a change at the top of the Belconnen Chess Club Championship this week with Gareth Oliver winning against Junta Ikeda in the key game between the the two highest rated players. Actually I did think about that, but for various other comps, I have put a disclaimer that the reports were written by Ian, so I didn't think I needed to point it out. (Also as you have stated, it is kinda obvious :) )

Evidently there was something interesting on at the mall last night as a number of players sacrificed important minutes on the clock by arriving late. However the playing was treated more seriously than the turning up and Board 3 was the only short game on the top row.

There were surprising results (upset would probably be too strong a word) on the top two boards. Khoi Hoang won against Junta Ikeda while Gareth Oliver reportedly fell into a tricky mate against Andrew Brown, though Andrew was two pawns up at the time. Allegedly one player resigned a drawn position which sounds like it could be an ending that I was demonstrating at the Development Squad last month (though not to that player).

The two leaders have not yet played so the winner of their encounter next week, if it is decisive, will secure at least equal first.

Leading scores

6 - Hoang, Brown
5 - Yuan, Sreetharan, Ali, Ninchich, G. Oliver

The winner(s) will probably come from this list though players on 4 could still feature if results go the right way.

The championships finally has a definite winner. Khoi Hoang is now assured of a share of first place and will probably remain outright winner next week.

For a change the top 3 boards were settled relatively quickly and it was a lot further down the boards where the games were long and bitter.

Khoi Hoang dominated in the critical game against Andrew Brown, with Andrew blundering a piece early on (well it looked like a blunder to me, but maybe there was some fiendish plan behind it - this is Jenni reporting not Ian, so my analysis is not as good as his :) ). Gareth attacked on both sides of the board pretty much at the same time to take the point against Kishore and Milan Ninchich pushed a pawn too far to crumble against the very talented Yi Yuan.

Shannon Oliver was happy with her draw against Milan Gricic especially after a bad fall down the stairs immediately preceeding her game - problem with high heels.

We had the flu hitting a number of the juniors including Jeremy Neeman and with Mos and Ian away the club felt a bit empty. On lower boards Michael Redpath, Michael Reading and Damien Neulist all played well to take victories against their opponents.

Looking at some of those results, it's not hard to see why many ACT players remain underrated despite plenty of interstate competition..

Wait a second Pax,if the higher rated local players dont perform well enough then how can the mid 1600 local be underated? :hmm:

Scoring 5.5 out of 8 for Junta Ikeda is a below par performance against that field. Even Mos Ali and Milan Grcic should be scoring higher against that field

Yeah well - why don't you come and play a tournament against them and see what happens to you. :) There is no way Khoi would be 1600 anywhere else (or Edward Xing 1200, or Yi 1400.... ). The problem (as I have said many times), is that the sub 1600/1700 kids mark time getting stronger and stronger until thay are strong enough to take out the 1800+ players. We are missing a band in the middle, so there isn't a slow progression up the ranks. Finally the group gets good enough to beat Mos and Milan and Ian etc and their ratings race up. This flows on down the list.

There are other factors that come into play with this particular tournament. e.g. Junta is playing Futsal and comes late straight from his game.

Nick Topfer, Mario, Gareth, Simon Mitchell and Kishore are all in College and the first 4 are in year 12. Nick has just finished HSC and the others start their final exams this week. All credit to them for not only playing all the way through year 12 but playing a tournament through their final exams. It does make their play patchy though.

Andrew Brown is a bit of a special case - he is incredibly inconsistent. He will lose to an absolute bunny one tournament and play really well another. So his rating is probably quite accurate as an average, although can vary wildly from one tournament to another.

e.g his performance rating for Sep 04 was 1527
Dec 04 1759
Mar 05 1283

Wait a second Pax,if the higher rated local players dont perform well enough then how can the mid 1600 local be underated? :hmm:

Scoring 5.5 out of 8 for Junta Ikeda is a below par performance against that field. Even Mos Ali and Milan Grcic should be scoring higher against that field

That's not the point.

The point is that the results are showing a large number of substantial upsets (200-300 point upsets, 800 points in one case), which indicates that there may be a number of *very* underrated players in the field (and in ACT in general). These substantially underrated players cannot help but pull down the mean rating of the rest of the population as their ratings increase.

Aye captain, I see stormy weather ahead. Batten down the hatches for another heated ratings debate about ACT Juniors.

Arghh maties, this be where we're headed:

I agree Dion - it's probably not worth debating again and again. :)

On the whole the ratings don't matter at all - I don't think Damien (who is an adult), could really give a stuff what his rating is - he would just like to have one. Incidentally his rating is not 700 he is still to get one, that is the rating I assigned him, although he could well be less than that - we will know on 1 December. Mark Hummel hasnt played for awhile and is probably a bit rusty.

The only time the ratings matter is when ACT kids go up for selection or when people rubbish our ACT champion.

The last round of the 2005 Belconnen Chess Club Championship started with Khoi Hoang already having at least a share of the title wrapped up, being a point ahead of Gareth Oliver, Andrew Brown and Yi Yuan. There was no legal set of pairings among the top four so it was possible for a multiple tie of all four players if Khoi lost his game.

Attempting to maximise the chances of a draw Khoi went for one of the world's most boring openings, the Italian Four Knights, against Yi Yuan. However it was not entirely succesful and Yi had the better of the game for some time but was unable to convert. In fact Khoi was winning when he forced a perpetual check to gain the necessary half-point.

This left the next two boards only of relevance for the minor placings. Gareth won a good game against Mos Ali to take second but Andrew was dislodged from the podium by Junta Ikeda. Top scores:

7 - G. Oliver
6 - Yuan, J. Ikeda
6 - Brown, Sreetharan, Rout, E. Xing, Grcic
