The Dandenong Chess Club website can be found at: www.dandychess.org.au
with all the details of the club, 2005 tournaments and current tournament
results and pairings.

Dandenong's Club Championship.

two years but will be challenged
by up to 10-players rated between 1900 and 2100 looking to claim the
honours.

Dandenong Rapidplay Tournament 2005

The Dandenong Rapidplay tournament concluded Wed 21st September with rounds
6 - 9 being played.
Congratulations to Tahir Lushaj who started the night 0.5 - point ahead of
two players but finished with a very convincing 1.5 - point margin over
second place.

In the seventh round Tahir disposed of one challenger when he beat Zdravko
Lojanica with a clever exchange sacrifice that gave him a passed pawn he
was able to push down the board. On board two Garry Lycett managed for the
first time to defeat Mehmedalija Dizdarevic, and with Frank Silas and
Milenko Lojanica drawing on board three it left Lushaj 0.5 - point ahead of
Lycett, who was a further 1 - point ahead of third place.

In the eighth round Lushaj only needed to defeat Lycett to wrap up the
tournament with a round to spare. Three weeks earlier these two players met
in the last round of the 'A' - Grade event, where a win by either player
would give them first place. The main difference between the two games was
that this was rapidplay, the result was the same but it just happened
sooner. Lushaj outplayed Lycett with unfortunately too much ease to go to
7.5 / 8 and lead by 1.5 - points over three players heading into the final
round.

Tahir could have taken it easy in the last round but showed no desire to
relax when he broke through the defence of Frank Silas to record yet
another victory. Garry Lycett recovered to beat Zdravko Lojanica in an
interesting endgame, Lycett's Queen and Knight forcing victory against
Lojanica's Queen and two connected passed pawns, this gave Lycett outright
second place. On board three Milenko Lojanica drew with Abdulwahab Rashid,
after winning his first three games Milenko seemed in a very peacable mood,
drawing 5 of his last 6 games, this cost him any chance of victory. Matthew
Potter joined a group of six players in equal 4th place with a very good
win over Mehmedalija Dizdarevic whilst Sadedin Redzepagic capped off a good
tournament with a win over Ramo Burzic to finish with 3 / 3 for the night
and jump into outright third place.

With a score of 8.5 / 9 Tahir fully deserved his victory in the tournament.
With the pre-tournament favorites finishing further down the field than
normal, second and third places were suprising. But Lycett lost only one
game, to the eventual winner and Sadedin was the only player to play Tahir
without losing, getting a draw in the fourth round.

Following are the final standings for the event.

Dandenong Rapidplay Tournament 2005

A correction to the results of the Dandenong Rapidplay Tournament.

The result of the final round game between Tahir Lushaj and Pranas Silas had
been recorded as a win for Tahir, was actually a draw. In an overwhelmingly
won position Tahir, with the tournament victory secure, kindly accepted
Pranas' draw offer. This enabled Pranas to finish equal third on 6.5 -
points.

Following are the corrected final standings for the event and a crosstable.

Ps to anyone who can tell me how to put in a horizontal scroll thing so the crosstable fits, or can do so, and is allowed to, please feel welcome. Doesn't sem to let me stop it wrapping

I was able to update it with the usual chesschat editor without too many problems. It appears to have hard carriage returns in the text which, once removed, stopped wrapping. Perhaps if you PM me with the process you go through to produce and upload the crosstable I could help. But maybe it is one of those things I would need to be watchnig over your shoulder at the time to really work out what was going on. However, more than happy to try to assist.

Hello everyone,
once again I will be copying and pasting the email bulletin from Gary Lycett here on the board.

Dandenong Club Championship 2005

52 players entered the 9-round Dandenong Club Championship with another
being added for round 2.
Richard Voon will be defending the title he has won for the last two years
but it wont be easy for the sixth seed.
As the first round of a swiss involves the top half of the draw playing the
bottom half the results are generally predictable.
Probably the biggest surprise in the first round was no lower rated player
managed to win. Normally there is at least a couple of upsets.
Five lower rated players did manage to hold their opponents to a draw. It
was no surprise that two of them were young Potter's, one day their ratings
will catch up with their ability. Graham McEachern and Gerard Barta also
did well to hold much higher rated players to a draw, whilst newcomer
Sujendra Premaka was obviously stronger than the provisional rating given
to him to do the pairings as he made Frank Silas struggle. In the end Frank
was probably lucky to scrape a draw in what looked to be a winning endgame
for Sujendra.

Although all other games went with the ratings there were some good fights
put up, most notably Craig Baxter who was finally ground down by TG Pramod
in a long game finishing after midnight. Craig had fought back from what
looked to be a hopeless position, but whenever he reached a stage where it
looked as though he would win he would overlook the best move and let TG
back in it. Eventually these slight miscalculations took their toll and
TG's passed pawns came through.
Geoff Lee and Mirko Kudric also put up good resistance before finally going
down against Ramo Burzic and Mehmedalija Dizdarevic respectively.

This year the Reserves Championship, (top scoring player in the bottom half
of the draw), is for players rated less than 1500.

Following are the results of round 1 and the pairings for round 2.

Hello Everyone,

here is the next bulletin,

Dandenong Club Championship 2005

Round 2 saw the 21 equal leaders whittled down to just 10 players now on 2
/ 2.
But it wasn't as easy for the top seeds as the ratings may have suggested.
Matthew Potter and Mendel Armerman put up strong resistance before both
eventually lost to Milenko Lojanica and Malcolm Pyke. Winner of the last
two club championships, Richard Voon, made a strange blunder against Don
Maciulaitis. After Don, who is blind, told Richard his move Bh6, Richard
wrote the correct move but played Ba6 on the board. A few moves later Don
won a rook playing Bxc1 and Richard realised his mistake. Richard was able
to win nevertheless to keep up his hopes of a "threepeat". Meanwhile Tahir
Lushaj looked lost against Henk Scherrenberg, a piece down and with Henk's
queen and bishop threatening his king it looked as though all Tahir could
do was get a perpetual with his queen against Henk's king. Henk may have
been overconfident as a few moves later, trying to avoid perpetual, he lost
his extra piece and the game.
Meanwhile a few lower rated players managed to cause some upsets, Nick
Vitkovic played very well to easily account for Garry Lycett and Geoff Lee
managed to regain some form to defeat Syf Pronk.

Following are the results for Rd 2 and the provisional pairings for Rd 3.

Hello, Altecman,

I thought that you knew that only the Autumn open has cash prizes; every other event at Dandenong only gives out trophies.

I think one of the earlier posts mentions something about a reserve champion, I think that is the only other category other than 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

ah here it is:

This year the Reserves Championship, (top scoring player in the bottom half
of the draw), is for players rated less than 1500. - Gary Lycett

Any way take care and God Bless, and see you tomorrow, Macavity

Hello, Everyone.

Here is the next bulletin from Gary Lycett.

Dandenong Club Championship 2005

The third round finished with five players remaining on 3 / 3, they are
already a full point ahead as oddly enough nobody is on 2.5
Richard Voon's hopes of defending his title took a setback with his loss to
Milenko Lojanica. Milenko was joined at the top by Malcolm Pyke,
Mehmedalija Dizdarevic and Zdravko Lojanica who each overcame strong
opposition. The fifth member of the leading group was a surprise with the
more fancied Don Machell going down to TG Pramod. TG has been playing well
since recently joining the club, with an equal first in the "B" Grade
tournament, but this was still an unexpected victory.

Although it is still early in the tournament the top two boards in round
four look to be very important games in determining the eventual winner.

In other games Chris Potter did very well to hold Abdulwahab Rashid to a
draw, while Peter Pispek could be returning to some form as he managed to
hold Matthew Potter to a draw also. Geoff Lee made Henk Scherrenberg work
long and hard for his point and Graham McEachern grabbed some more rating
points, this time from Syf Pronk who looks a bit rusty after a couple of
months off.

Following are the results for Rd 3 and the provisional pairings for Rd 4.

Regards: Garry Lycett

Hello everyone,

I found the above comment a bit odd about the difficulty. Let us see the important positions.

After move 27...Bd4??, I must win the exchange. After the following exchanges we reach the position after Black's 35...Bd5 ( 35...exf5?? is forbidden because after 36.Rd6, and Rxb6 the white pawns will be unstoppable); is this really such a difficult position to be won? Agreed, I actually made a a meal of it; both 48.Rd1, and 49.Rd1 were much clearer ways to progress, but was there something significant that Black missed? I did feel during the game that 50...Ke6 or 50...Kd6 would have been a pest, but felt that they could be overcoma via triangulating against g6, and via the plan of the game of infiltrating on the c-file after Kb2.

Would be interested ( and appreciative) if anyone can point out what I have missed?

Take care and God Bless, Macavity

PS perhaps the comment was about the time taken to play the game?? I was the last finished for the evening... :hmm:

Hello, everyone,

Here is the next email report,

Dandenong Club Championship 2005

The fourth round resulted in only one of the leading five players going to
4 / 4. Zdravko Lojanica was able to capitalise on some mistakes from
Malcolm Pyke to put himself in outright first place. But with five rounds
to go and ten players within a point of him Zdravko still faces a tough
fight to become club champion. On board one Milenko Lojanica and
Mehmedalija Dizdarevic drew and are both 1/2-point behind Zdravko. The
other leader going into the round was TG Pramod who looked to be joining
Zdravko on 4 when he was two exchanges and two pawns up against Richard
Voon. Another loss by Richard would certainly end his chances of a third
straight championship and so he kept resisting, first getting back one
exhange and eventually achieving a position where TG was forced to go for a
perpetual check rather than lose. So TG is also on 3.1/2-points with no
less than seven players on 3-points.

Leading the Reserves Championship is one of the new Sudanese players,
Andrew Atem who defeated Sam Biondo in this round to be on 3. Henk
Scherrenberg could have joined him, but Henk found trying to mate with a
bishop and knight beyond him. In his game against Kuol Deng 70 moves passed
before the start of the 50-move limit for Henk to find a mate. Spectators
thought they were in for a long battle but Henk only reeled off about
fifteen moves before stalemating Kuol.

Next week the tournament passes the halfway stage, and if the usual draw
between the brothers Lojanica eventuates then wins by the players on
3-points would keep them very much in the running and should setup an
exciting last four rounds.

Speaking of brothers playing drawn games, round four saw Michael and
Matthew Potter play each other. In an exciting game with many twists and
turns a draw was eventually agreed in a position where some spectators
thought Matthew was winning. Their opinion was based on Matthew's better
positioned knight, although others thought Michael's position looked better
due to a better pawn structure. You be the judge........

SHAME SHAME SHAME

The Potter brothers should be embarrassed at agreeing to a 2 move draw, even IM's playing for a cash prize usually play at least 6 moves . They werent in a commanding position in the tournament and they still used this woeful tactic. Its these kind of antics that affect the credibility of tournament chess. Can anyone tell me if the ACF has a number of moves limit rule for tournaments, and if not why they dont. This kind of rubbish should be stamped out.

Hello everyone,

:hmm:

I don't think you need to get to the position 35...Bd5. Instead of 32.Red1, what is wrong with 32.Qe2? White recentralises his queen, defends his c-pawn, and if Black grabs the a-pawn, then 33.Rd7 is very strong. Black may play 32..Rc7, but then white has 33.Qc2+ defending a4, and can then play 34.Red1 threatening Rd7. White appears an exchangeup for nothing. Just a thought :)

Hello everyone,

Sorry for the delay in putting this up:

Dandenong Club Championship 2005

The fifth round saw a change of leadership with the Lojanica brothers not
recording their usual draw, although under strange circumstances. In what
looked an even position Zdravko offered a draw but Milenko refused, Zdravko
then left and lost on time. This took Milenko to the lead with 4.5 / 5,
joined by Mehmedalija Dizdarevic who accounted for the dangerous TG Pramod.
With four rounds to play they are 1/2-point ahead of Don Machell and
Zdravko Lojanica with a further 8 players on 3.5.

The Lojanica game was not the strangest finish though, in a big upset
Henning Rasmussen defeated Phillip Drew with a clever tactic. Phillip was a
piece up when Henning played a move and announced "checkmate", Phillip also
thought it was checkmate and the game ended with Henning winning. Showing
the conclusion to other players later in the night Phillip was stunned, and
not a little upset, when it was pointed out to him that it was not
checkmate. In fairness to Henning, he honestly thought it was checkmate and
didn't do it deliberately.

In other games Syf Pronk finally found some form to register his first
victory in the tournament while in the last game to finish Tahir Lushaj
held one of the pre-tournament favorites, Malcolm Pyke, to a draw.
Apparently Tahir had chances to win the game, with most spectators involved
in the post-game analysis sure Tahir was winning. But Malcolm seemed to
have a perpetual check available that nobody could work out how to avoid.
Tahir told me later that "Malcolm is always lucky against me", well I must
confess that Malcolm is always "lucky" against me too, and I am often told
by players that they lost to their higher rated opponent due to bad luck.
Maybe the rating system is nothing more than a "luck indicator", or maybe,
just maybe, it has something to do with skill and ability.

Next Wednesday, 9/11/05, will see two postponed games played with Round 6
being played the following week, 16/11/05.

Postponed Games:
Rd3: Atem, Andrew 1493 vs Rasmussen, Henning 918
Rd5: Seehusen, John 1104 vs Baxter, Craig 1316

If these games do not go according to rating the Round 6 pairings as shown
below will be changed.

Following are the results for Rd 5 and the provisional pairings for Rd 6.

Hello, everyone,

as there have been some changes to the pairings, I will post them as well as the report on the postponed and in advance games played last night.

Dandenong Club Championship 2005

Following the results of the postponed games the pairings for round 6 have
been altered.
Another major affect on the pairings was the withdrawal of Zdravko Lojanica
who was obviously not happy with the loss on time to his brother, this is
unfortunate as Zdravko was on 4-points and still very much in the battle
for first.

This withdrawal could also have an affect on the tiebreak being used if the
tournament finishes in a tie.
The Club Championship if finishing in a tie is decided using the following
tiebreaks in sequence until a winner is determined.
1/ Median-Bucholz 2/ Bucholz 3/ Progressive
*** Last year the Voon - Pyke tie was still even after tiebreak 1/ and only
decided with tiebreak 2/. ***
For the purposes of a Median-Bucholz and Bucholz tiebreak Zdravko's score
will be counted as 6-points.
This is based on the ruling from the FIDE handbook "The Official Rules of
Chess" and as displayed on the FIDE Website.
"Independently of the result of an unplayed game (win by Bye, win or loss
by forfeit, no game because the player has withdrawn or was absent for some
round(s)) for reasons of tiebreak, the result shall be counted as a Draw"

Of the higher rated players in contention to win the event both Milenko
Lojanica and Malcolm Pyke have played Zdravko whilst Mehmedalija
Dizdarevic, Richard Voon and Don Machell have not. Which group is adversely
affected in a tiebreak depends on whether you think Zdravko would have
finished on more than 6-points or not.

Following are the pairings for Round 6.
(Richard Voon and Tahir Lushaj have already played their Rd6 game)

Hello everyone, here is the next bulletin

Dandenong Club Championship 2005

Round 6 was marred by no less than five forfeits, no doubt this had to do
with people wanting to watch the Australians qualify for the World Cup.
Unfortunately the DOP was only notified by one of the five players who
forfeited, four other opponents had to wait around for an hour.
(I must confess unnotified forfeits really annoy me, I have always believed
forfeits should be rated !!)

Round 6 did also provide some interesting games and a change of leadership.
At this stage of the tournament there is normally one or two players who
have established a lead and look to be the eventual winner(s). Had either
of the leaders, Milenko Lojanica or Mehmedalija Dizdarevic, won then this
would have been the case. But in a surprise result both leaders were beaten
and the situation at the top only got murkier. Don Machell defeated Milenko
and now leads the event with 5 / 6. However he is being chased by no less
than 6 players on 4.5 and a further 6 players on 4. A loss by any of the
players on the top six boards next week would make it very difficult to
come back and win the event, so there will no doubt be some very hard
fought games.

While Milenko and Mehmedalija remained on 4.5 they were joined by four
other players. Frank Silas won a couple of pawns against Mehmedalija and
converted in a well played rook and pawn ending. Malcolm Pyke always looked
in control against TG Pramod after winning an exchange, but TG refused to
give up and appeared to be trying for a no pawn rook vs knight ending. But
Malcolm wasn't going to let that happen and after 90-odd moves and close to
midnight TG conceded the point. Garry Lycett had a surprisingly easy win
against Kuol Deng who has played much better in earlier rounds. And
defending champion Richard Voon accounted for Tahir Lushaj the previous
week.

Leading the Reserves Championship (U1500) is Andrew Atem, one of the
players on 4 points. He has a tough game against Eddie Kocjancic next week
and very good wins to both Peter Pispek and Chris Potter have them on 3.5
and waiting to pounce. However Peter and Chris also have very hard games
next week and with no less than nine U1500 players on 3 points this looks
as though it will be decided only in the final round. A bit of luck with
the pairings could end up being very decisive in this event.

Following are the Round 6 results and the Round 7 pairings.

Regards: Garry Lycett

Hello, Everyone,
here is the next newsletter from Gary Lycett:

Dandenong Club Championship 2005

The lead in the Dandenong Club Championship changed yet again in round 7
with sole leader Don Machell losing to Malcolm Pyke and being replaced by
four players all moving to 5.5 / 7.
Joining Malcolm on 5.5 are Milenko Lojanica, Richard Voon and Garry Lycett.
These four players are followed by Don Machell and Andrew Atem on 5 with
another six players on 4.5
Of the leaders Richard Voon is hoping to repeat his triumphs of the last
two years, in round 8 he will need to get past Malcolm Pyke. These two tied
for first last year with Richard winning the tournament on tiebreak despite
losing their individual game. Milenko Lojanica has come very close to
winning this tournament in previous years but has never managed to do it.

Andrew Atem continues to lead the Reserves Championship with a very
impressive 5 / 7. He is 1/2-point ahead of Sujendra Premaka with a further
5 U1500 players on 4 points.

Round 7 of the 9-round tournament featured 16 wins with Black against only
4 wins with the White pieces.

Following are the results for Rd 7, the pairings for Rd 8 and the current
standings with the three tiebreak figures as they currently stand.

The final round is coming up!!
Voon wants to keep his status as Dandenong Champion but there are many others that have the chance of winning but i think there is 4 Milenko Lojenica, Malcolm Pyke, Richard Voon and finally Don Machell Don i think is out of the running because he has allready lost a game to Pyke but there are many chances Milenko pulled up a good win against Garry Lycett On wends while Voon held Pyke to a draw so let the final round begin

Hello, everyone,

here is the above mentioned promised report...

Dandenong Club Championship 2005

Round 8 saw Milenko Lojanica take the sole lead with his comfortable win
over Garry Lycett. Milenko has come close in the past to winning the club
championship but has just missed out each time. He is now on 6.5 / 8 and
leads by only half a point from Malcolm Pyke, Richard Voon and Don Machell.
Malcolm looked as though he was going to join Milenko in the lead but
somehow Richard managed to hang on in a game Malcolm always seemed to have
the upper hand in. At the end Malcolm's extra rook (!) was not enough and
he had to settle for a perpetual.

Andrew Atem and Sujendra Premaka are now joint leaders in the Reserves
Championship (U1500) on 5-points closely followed by a number of players on
4.5

Following are the results for Rd8, pairings for Rd9 and the standings with
tiebreaks as they currently stand.

Regards: Garry Lycett

Dandenong Club Championship 2005

Congratulations to Malcolm Pyke who last night won the Dandenong Club
Championship with his victory over tournament top seed Milenko Lojanica in
the final round. Malcolm finished on 7 / 9, 1/2-point ahead of Milenko,
Richard Voon and Don Machell. A further four players finished on 6 / 9 in
what was a very tight finish right to the end. Milenko had led by 1/2-point
going into last night's game and even a draw would have given him the
title. But he was unable to withstand Malcolm, who was determined to win
this event after last year tying for first but losing the tiebreak to
Richard Voon.

An interesting scenario looked likely to develop, after Malcolm had won his
game he had to wait for the result of Voon - Machell to see if either
player could also get to 7-points. A win by Richard would have left the
same two players as last year in first place to be decided by tiebreak,
(which Malcolm would have won anyway). But Richard couldn't convert an
extra pawn and was forced to settle for a perpetual, leaving Malcolm alone
in first.

The closeness of the event is shown by the fact that the leader(s) changed
after every round from rounds 3 - 9, with five different players being
outright leader at some stage.

The Reserves Championship (U1500) was won by Sujendra Premaka who had a
very good tournament to finish on 6-points. Currently unrated I suspect
this could be the last time he will be eligible for an under 1500 prize.

A reminder that next week Wednesday 14/12/2005 is Dandenong Chess Club's
breakup and presentation night.

Following are the round 9 results and final standings.

Regards: Garry Lycett
