Maybe I am wrong, but didnt Igor also qualify for the FM title at the zonal?

Maybe I am wrong, but didnt Igor also qualify for the FM title at the zonal?Although players may qualify they also need to apply for the title and pay the applicable FIDE fees.
Now it should be noted that Igor had qualified for the FM well before the Zonal, as the only requirment is a FIDE rating over 2300 which he achieved back in July 2003.
The reason he didnt already have it prior to the Zonal was no doubt because he was not inclined to apply for it. It would seem reasonable that he also wasnt inclined to apply for it after the Zonal.

can you apply for the title retrospectively?
ie. if rating falls below 2300 can you apply as it was 2300+ previously
OR is a one-time offer only?!

The applicable regulation isfollows:

1.3 Those titles gained by achieving a published rating at some time or other:
1.31 FIDE Master 2300
1.32 Candidate Master 2200
1.33 Woman FIDE Master 2100
1.34 Woman Candidate Master 2000

While I am at it, let me personally comiserate with our own Wollongong girl, Vaness Reid, who missed out on a title by some countback anomaly. Better luck next time!

Vaness was more gracious, admitting Shannon beat her significantly in their individual game.

Yes, I know. Vaness runs hot and cold. I am sure she will iron out those lows and take a title soon enough.

Igor is quite rightly more focused on getting his IM. After all, an FM title is worth diddly squat apart from bragging rights as far as I can tell. And I believe the ACF will pay for IM application fees, but not FM (not 100% sure).

pax,

5. Titles

a. The ACF will pay the fees for any GM and WGM titles.

b. The ACF will pay 50% of the fees for any IM and WIM titles.

c. The ACF shall not bear the cost of fees to be paid for FM or WFM titles.

bjelobrk is still under NZL right?
all bit too complicated for me!
if he got the IM who would pay: ACF or NZCF?

Yes, good points both of you.

My point is mainly that nobody gives you anything for an FM.

The FM title though could be useful for a player who is trying to become an IM. Seeing 50% of players must be titled for norms, having a the FM title might get a player invited to a tournament, or even make it possible for a tournament to allow norms.

Well you have to pay to get the title awarded :( ,and maybe nz fed isnt prepared to pay Igors fee seeing as he lives here permanently. My understanding is that they didnt pick him for their last olympiad team even though he's their highest rated fide player for that very reason. :(

Iggy didn't play Olympiad because he is not eleglible. NZ chess has rules regarding playing in NZ. IM Ben Martin is also not elegibile for the same reason.

Liberace, how much time do you have to spend in NZ to qualify for their olympiad team? :hmm:

Not exactly sure. My understanding with the rules is that it's not how long you stay there but how much chess you play in NZ. It maybe 20 games a year (I have no idea...) But whatever it is, Iggy and Ben Martin don't play it and so are not eligible.

I'm not sure if their rules allow players to live OS, play some chess in NZ and make the team if they play enough. Iggy's best shot is to win the NZ Championship in Queenstown as this would give him automatic entry into the team under NZ Chess Federation rules.

Hope that helps...
