It was CdeP who famously likened it to an orienteering event; in earlier years.
I sincerely hope this year it is not to be be modelled on The Amazing Race, where contestants only find the location of the next venue by successfully completing tasks. ;)

Maybe that' a way of making chess seem more like sport! ;) Players have to race and find the location of the next round. If they get there late they loose time of their clock. :owned:

Just recieved a brochure on the Victorian Championships.

Discount, Concession and Exempt entries, special applications close August 16
Entries close Friday August 19.
Games begin Thursday August 25.

Entry fees $72 or $48 concession - less $12 discount if payment is received before 16 August.

Is anyone interested in the exact dates?

Hello Everyone,
I understand that Gary Wastell is doing a progress around the Clubs dropping these off; last night he was to have visited Melbourne and Dandenong. I can confirm that he was at Dandenong, as I was there. Bobby, perhaps you can ask Greg if He saw Wastell, and in turn whether he could put aside a flier for you.

If people want me to, I can try and find time to type up the relevant details here, otherwise perhaps visit a club in the next week or so and get one.

I do know however that the cut off for early entries is Tuesday 16/08/05 and that the fees are: $72 full and $48 concession with a $12 discount if entered before 16 th August,

Take care all and God Bless, Macavity

PS the fliers are very colourful, and it was good to see that MCC features on the cover; although I am a bit biased!! :D M

To be honest Mischa, I do not understand why ChessVictoria wants the Melbourne rounds to be played at night, clearly they could be played during daytime ie saturday or Sunday.

I would like to point out that I personally found the ChessVictoria entry form misleading. The choice of location was framed in the negative, which in my opinion could have caused some confusion. Maybe you ought to ring up GW and double check which options you ticked. If we remember that a cross meant "prefer not to play" while a full box meant "definately unable", on the entry form.

From what I can see from the cv website, only James's first two games are displayed, one is at Melbourne and one at Elwood. Not sure why the full draw isnt displayed, but it isnt.

It would be best to politely ask Gary where James is allocated to play each round before saying that you will have to withdraw him. Gary might have a very good reason for why James's first game is at Melbourne.

It is very difficult to give everyone their ideal preferences when you get conflicting requests. Maybe some of the other players in his division said they would prefer not to play at Elwood. Conflict of scheduling arise and as long as the tournaments cant do anything about it, then I think it would be very unwise to withdraw James.

I see from the conditions on the cv website that you did have an avenue to apply for James to be exempt from certain conditions, did you apply for that? Also I would imagine that you can challenge the draw, if you ask for the full draw, if it has been done that is.

given a certain en courant shout box discussion i assume that june ratings are being used for the championship and ancillary divisions

however when the numbers are crunched for these events what will be used ... the june ratings or the september ratings?

should the start of the above be altered in future to ensure that the september ratings have arrived and therefore more pertinent to the event(s) at hand?

i sense there may be further disappointment in certain quarters upon the release of the december ratings

Since I saw him playing at Elwood last week, this only leaves Box Hill...

Hi,

I am not banned from any venue in Victorian chess. This report stems from correspondence I had with Arosar, who misunderstood the circumstances. The truth is I was told by A.M aka (Happyfriend) that I was banned from playing at Elwood chess club (Happyfriend was the Elwood treasurer). Unfortunately nobody else at Elwood knew anything about the ban. This was in response to a letter that was sent by me (as MCC secretary), on behalf of the MCC committee ,informing A.M that he was banned until further notice from MCC for various reasons.

In reality I actually made a complaint to the chief arbiter Gary Wastell concerning my treatment in the Victorian Championship in regards to A.M. Gary dutifully informed me that A.M ought to be taken with a grain of salt....there was also some rumorasabout six year old finger paintings be confused for Nazi swastikas, but I cannot confirm the reality of such claims.

You can't post search links in that way, they wont work.

http://chesschat.org/search.php?do=finduser&u=1186

should work though.

However, this doesn't answer Mischa's question. You replied to a post by fg7 regarding the post of Elwood treasurer. You seemed to indicate that his position as former incumbent was a source of embarassment. I too am puzzled as to why that would be the case.

Just that I thought Happyfriend wanted to be anon. and that some of his strident views that lead to his banning might be embarrassing for him.

Of course I would not be embarrased - that is an emotion for big egoed wannabes.

Happyfriend was not banned for holding strident views (although I don't contend that he doesn't), he was banned for repeated defamatory posts. These are very different things and the two should not be confused.

Hello,

I just want to say the bulletins are fairly contoversial. As a player it appears that my scoresheet has no connection with the bulletin board transcriptions, which of course leads to a false impression of the course of the games. Some say it could be Depasquales fault but my little spies suggest the problem may stem from the person entering the games into the computer system. Three guesses who that could be? Hint- Is the chief antagonist responsible for the orientation course?

cheers Fg7

Tuesday night.
Orienteering of the VIC Championships has reached the halls of Box Hill.
Nice to see D Hacche, L Sandler, D Johansen, D Smerdon...on the top boards.

I had to leave a bit early; but that was enough time for James Morris to nicely take a full point from Roger Beattie. Well done James.

Trivia Question.
Why is Roger Beattie well known?

In the central game of the Victorian championship David Smerdon with white pieces played an unfortunate variation and lost without too much fight against Darryl Johansen. In another game L.Sandler-D.Hacche 1-0.
Next important game between leaders D.Johansen-M.Rujevic will be played in Elwood chess club Saturday ,september 17th.THe current standings are Johansen 2,5 out of 3,Rujevic 3 out of 4,Goldenberg,Levi,Depasquale and Frohlich on + 1 each

If the CV webmaster is reading this, I would be happy to provide some free time/counsel on how to move from the current site layout to something more user friendly. Perhaps migration to a content management system such as phpNuke or DotNetNuke is in order? Free modules such as membership management, newsletters, blogs, FAQs, and so on. I'm sure it couldn't be too hard to integrate in some chess-related stuff to a system like that.

Frosty

That is a kind offer of yours, and Mexicans in general have appreciated your emergence.
The CV Webmaster does not read here, ever.

The original creator of the site was Harry Holholis. Maintenance was subsequently taken over by a QLD guy for a commercial rate for a couple of years. That commercial deal was terminated and now the site is populated by the President, and he is not in your league as an IT-type. I recount the history because it explains somewhat why it
> does not load efficiently, and
>> has a design that appears complex.

I think the Prez is happy to continue providing/inputting data to the site, but migration or re-design need a different resource.

Hi Belthasar,

If James had not played through the Grand Final, though he did see most of the last quarter, the time trouble on Thursday would have been nothing!!

James played a Winawer French, with the the white king 0-0 and Nf3. James installed his white square bishop on a4, 0-0-0, and then threw forward his King side pawns. The Bc1 eventually got to h4 and ate one of the horses. A real shame as it was such a miserable piece as the pawn chain f7-e6-d5-c4 was in existence, and the c2 and c3 pawns were certainly not the pride of White's position.

In the end, all minor pieces departed, and the heavy piece ending, Q+2R each, saw James attack numerous white pawns, win one of them, and then exchange all the rooks in such a way as to leave himself with an unstoppable past pawn, upon which his opponent resigned ( actually he may have resigned a couple of moves before.

Will write some more about the other games after dinner,

Take care and God Bless, Macavity

Of course, it is evident that James Morris is on fire!!

Hi all,
Only three week to go in Vic championship, with last round to be played in National Gallery of Victoria Sunday October 16.Hot favourite and leader of the championship Gm Darryl Johansen did not play this week(his game against D.Beaumont was postponed till October 15) and funny enough he improved chances to win his eleventh Victorian championship.Chris Depasquale was on +2 and he make solid draw against Peter Froehlich and was unlucky yesterday when he lost on time in much better position against David Hacche, this results sent him on +1 (3,5 out of 6 games).Dark horse of the tournament Eddy Levi with white pieces was fortunate to escape with half point against James Hislop who stopped his losing run(draws against Goldenberg and Levi). In my game against Igor Goldenberg I was pressing all the way only to make mistake on move 70 in Queen ending and instead of winning game ended in a draw(74 moves).Next week 8 games will be played.
Box Hill chess club on tuesday will host the following games :D.Johansen-L.Sandler,D.Smerdon-E.Levi and D.Hacche-P.Froehlich.
In super Thursday Melbourne chess club will host 5 games :
D.Johansen -J .Hislop
P.Froehlich-D.Beaumont
E.Levi-M.Rujevic
I.Goldenberg-D.Smerdon
C.Depasquale-L.Sandler
It is hard to say who can compete with Darryl for the title.
The tournament situation as follows :Johansen on +3(3,5 out of 4 games),Rujevic +2(4 out of 6),Froehlich,Depasquale,Levi all on +1,Smerdon,Sandler 2 out of 4 games each ,Goldenberg on 3 out of 6,Hacche 2out of 5 games,Hislop one point after 5 games and Beaumont scored half a point after 5 games

Hi leonid,

Hi all,
funny enough he improved chances to win his eleventh Victorian championship.Chris Depasquale was on +2 and he make solid draw against Peter Froehlich and was unlucky yesterday when he lost on time in much better position against David Hacche, this results sent him on +1 (3,5 out of 6 games).

Truth be known it was actually me who postponed, not Johansen. I had a gig with my band on the same night.

Anyway Depas deserves some bad luck! Since he has decided to publish games and annotate them in his usual subjective style I will actually annotate my game against him on this bulletin board when the tournament is over.

At the moment all I can say is....how can you give your opponent an ! then be winning by force in 4 moves, without a blunder being played by your opponent? It seems everytime I read a Depasquale annotation the position is a forced win for him....call me sceptical but he really is not objective!!

Nor do I agree with having a fellow competitor annotate the bulletin games. IMO most of his annotations are cheap pyschological shots at the weaker players in th tournament. Furthermore he is barely literate, for a PAID chess journalist he sure does express himself badly

cheers fg7

In case anyone missed it Levi had a forced win against Johansen after Ke5 in the rook ending, not that you would know from the bulletin annotations.

I had hoped attract Chris to the 2005 Box Hill OPEN, now in progress. (I wonder if DOROPHIL would have approved?). We discussed quite amiably on the phone for some minutes and then he decided that it clashed with his responsibilities to produce annotations (et al) for the event you are in.

Baz

Smerdon did not win, and this reporter is extremely embarassed to have to type this. He looked gone for all money from my view and when Edi Levi walked into the analysis room with the air of a winner I was gobsmacked. My equanimity returned when the giants, Messrs Froehlich and Hacche, paused their analysis to query Edi, and it turned out both those Gullivers thought the SMURF had the advantage.
Further discussion evinced that the game was following a GM published line about 8 weeks old. Edi could remember some (or sufficient ;) ) to prevail.

Smerdon is coaching (with Johansen, Rogers, and Saw) the ERGAS squad today. If I get a chance I will try to get more of the game from him.

Chris Wallis' opponent walked away a loser, and was muttering...."it is only the first 40 years of learning chess that is painful." :)

I wasn't counting, but after our discussion today I know that you had an accurate view.

Btw, did you notice that Frank had a serious case of CAPS_LOCK? ;)
But then when I read his profile and saw he was a dentist it explained all. :uhoh:

I think this is right. Frank seems to have copied the progressives from the Chess Victoria which has Romy on 4.5. However, looking back at his results he has 2 wins on forfeit, one win, 2 draws and a loss to Paul Bearup.

All three games in Victorian champinship played on Tuesday/Wednesday ended with the sames results -draw.P.Froehlich-D.Johansen lasted less than ten moves.Strategical draw for the leader.
In a game between E.Levi and D.Hacche Eddi had some advantage as far as I saw it but could not capitalise. My game against David Smerdon lasted more than five hours and ended well after midnight in 127 moves draw .I probably missed good chances in bishop versus knight endgame only to find myself defending for 65 moves queen endgame with pawn down.
Standings are D.Johansen 6,5 out of 8 games ,M.Rujevic 6,5 out of 9 ,L.Sandler 5 out of 9,P.Froehlich and E.Levi 4,5 out of 7,D.Smerdon 4,5 out of 8,C.Depasquale 4 out of 9,I.Goldenberg and D.Hacche 3 out of 8,D.Beaumont 1,5 out of 7 and J.Hislop 1 out 8 points.
Another results which I saw in Reserves tournament M.Raine-C.Wallis 0-1.
In Qualifying tournament 1 James Morris beat Artem Nikolaevsky and with an excellent score 8,5 points out of 9 games won the tournament with round to spare.Well done James!

I've volunteered to produce something on the reserves, unless anyone has any objections? I thought it was of a high quality for a "second" tournament, and enjoyed very much playing in it.

I should get the gamescores on Wednesday and will try to get it done as quickly as possible. If anyone who played wants to add some analysis of their own, feel free to PM me :)

And congratulations to all participants of all the events, and thanks to those who organised these tournaments, and the many people who helped in various ways. I've been made to feel very welcome by the Victorian chess community:)

No offence Rincewind, but your laying it on a bit thick here....you almost sound like a Hallmark card.
"James won this won for his mother"-you make it sound like she's on her deathbed and looking for her boy to provide that last bit of inspiration. :!:

I have no problem with James being congratulated, but lets not make it too over the top. :ponder:

As it was one sentence I don't think it was "over the top". In any regard, it was an entirely accurate representation of the events. Mischa stresses quite a lot over James results. The more imortant the game the higher her stress level. Going into round 9 she asked James to just offer Artem a draw and get it over with. However James had other ideas.

I think he really played a good game too. 23.f3! was a nice refutation to the intermezzo.

Hi Fireeater,
seems like a good idea, it doesn't look like we are getting any coverage from CV any time soon, so that would be great!! Perhaps anyone from the whole sequence of events could post their games in this thread too??

Take care and God Bless, Macavity

oh and I got another one of the bulletins today, should be able to post some more games soon

Actually this thread is as good as any Fireeater, unless you wanted to put it in one of the Games and Analysis thread; given very few people would visit those threads as often as these ones, it will get better exposure here.

Take care and God Bless, Macavity

Fireeater,

If you are going to put the games up by using the pgn uploader, dont put all the games up in one file. This has a habit of freezing the page and locking everything up on the viewers computer.

Hello, everyone,

As I have said, I found another Bulletin today, which seems to be much bigger than many of the other editions as it seems to include almost all the games up to the last round from the last one, and it also seems to be a bit time warpish as it suggests that it is for games up to a certain date and contains some from 2 days afterwards??

In any case here is Mr Firegoat's win over Levi.

Hello all,
Yesterday I have got the last bulletin(number 8) with games from the last round and comments on tournament performance of all participants.About my result C.Depasquale wrote. "Sandler's score looks about right.Although gifted a full point by Depasquale and half a point by Beaumont he also could have converted full points against Goldenberg and Smerdon, and could have accepted Rujevic's draw offer before losing." I would like to make a few comments about these remarks. In my game against Depasquale I have outplayed him and reaches winning position where he just blundered piece in one move and for some reason I did not take this gift (both of us were thinking that it was not possible).Later in the game I had easy opportunities to finish him off but make mistakes and Chris came back from dead only to lose from one step from victory.I should off won this game much earlier without Depasquale "gifts".In my game against M.Rujevic he sacrifaced a piece for two pawns to disbalance the position .Soon after he offered draw which I rejected and I have missed an excellent opprtunity to win the game .After this he played very well and won 97 move thriller. In my own opinion I probably underscore between 1 and 1,5 points.Missed wins aganst D.Smerdon and I.Goldenberg ,had chances to win against M.Rujevic or at least draw which he offered and was lucky to get half a point from lost pawn endgame against D.Beaumont.Against C.Depasquale I believe that result of the game was very logical.

Does anyone know how the results from the reserves will work? Did Carl finish 1st on countback or did he finish equal with Wallis? If they finished equal first will both be eligible for next years state championship? :hmm:

We finished equal first. As for qualifying for next years Champs, "the qualifier shall be the player with the higher ACF rating one month before the scheduled start of the relevant competition." I'm not 100% sure what that means, but think that it means we won't know who's qualified until next year.

I have all but completed the bulletin of the Vic Reserves. All the games I have been given have some annotations but some games are missing:

Yachou-Wallis
Yachou-Raine
Wallis-Szuveges
Pecori-Kalisch (partial gamescore)
Kalisch-Wallis
Szuveges-Yachou
Raine-Wallis
Szuveges-Kalisch
Stirling-Raine

I saw Chris Wallis at the Elwood tournament and asked him to send me some games, which he agreed to. Seeing he was joint winner of the tournament it would be a shame if these games didn't appear, so I'll hold on for a week or 2 and see if any games turn up. If anyone knows of any of the players could they perhaps ask them please, or any CV members, could you please ask Gary Wastell if he has any of these games?

Thanks,

Carl

Hey carl, which games are you missing,i could send you some of the games but for my own they are all rubish in this turney i got destroyed every game nearly.i did not want to withdraw,i could not wait for the thing to finish.i think that was my last reserves ever i never seem to get even 50% in this turney for many years now.

I got all your games but the one versus Tom Kalisch I couldn't decipher past about move 12. And your games weren't rubbish. There was a lot of interesting stuff in your wins and losses, as there was in virtually all the games. I think the field was pretty evenly matched and a lot of the games showed good fighting chess. I don't think many people handled the time limit very well, and that caused a lot of mistakes in fairly critical positions. Everyone made errors and most people had a bit of luck at some stage, but that's what makes tournaments good :D With just a few moves in critical positions changed, the tournament table could have been completely different.

Vic Reserves bulletin is finished. If anyone wants a copy by email, then send me your email address by pm. Otherwise, I'm not sure how the thing will be distributed. If anyone has any ideas, other than sending it to Gary Wastell, and to Paul Broekhuyse which I've already done, then please say.

Cheers

Carl
