Currently no SA events have been submitted. I have emailed a number of SACA executives regarding this but have not yet received a reply.

It is my understanding the CV Ratings Offcier has not been sent the Australian Masters and the Victorian Junior Masters and Reserves.

The NSW ratings Offcier has not received the Common Man yet.

From Queensland the Queensland Championship and Reserves have not been submitted.

WA informs me the State championship will be sent shortly.
ACT informs me the Cold Comfort Cup and the Brindabella Snows will be forthcomng as well as the soon to finish winter Cup and some rapid events.

From Queensland the Queensland Championship and Reserves have not been submitted.
It is coming soon. Same for the BCC Winter Swiss which was just completed. BCC Steinitz Memorial finishes on 25th August but will be sent in time to have it rated on the september list. Under1300 tournament will also be sent in time for the september list.

Grumpy pills. I take 'em too (at work)! Seriously though, put yourself in Bill's shoes. He's accused of everything bar being the prime mover behind the Holocaust, and he's a volunteer ... he's probably sick and tired of people expecting him to do this and expecting him to do that. Or perhaps its just in the way you asked the favour?

I wasn't asking for a favour as such. I just thought maybe he'd already calculated it. So just say that. Why be so upset?

I wasn't asking for a favour as such.It sure sounded like a favour.

I just thought maybe he'd already calculated it.I had not done so nor had I given any indication I had. You should have therefore concluded that I hadnt.

So just say that.I did.

Thanks for proving it.

BTW if I was Billbot then you certainly wouldnt be able to get an answer to your question regarding Sales now would you. :hmm:

Just to prove I'm not totally unhelpful here is a hint for you.
Try asking the question regarding Sales closer to the ratings publication date.

I have sent them along, they are somewhere between Ian Murray and Patrick Byrom I would imagine. The fide report has already been done and sent as well. Therefore, not my fault.

Hi Bill, quick question, we have a tourny under way at Croydon that doesn't finish until Thursday 1/9/2005 ... will that be too late for submission into the September ratings equation even if I get it submitted quick-smart as it completes?

Dude, just send them straight to Bill - he will rate them on time, cos he's a champ. The only thing Murray does is process the CAQ rating fees. And you must know, like myself he is on holiday, so send them to be rated.

Forgot about those 'exorbitant State rating fees' that must be processed.

But due processes have to be followed on a national scale, wouldn't you think, Dion? I mean, it's not like some uni club or something, is it?

exorbitant state rating fees normally, but not for the qld champs and reserves. Ian has repeatedly told me off for sending the sp files to both him and Pat at the same time. Everyone must send them to Ian first for financial processing, then he sends them to Pat and on they go to Bill.

I suspect that Bill is going to recieve quite a few tournament files from up here right near the end of the rating period as Ian is up north at the moment for a week or so and there are a couple of tournaments that finish in the last couple of days of the rating period.

Indeed, right you are Greg. Of late I've simply been rather dissatisfied with the 'due process' that goes on at centrelink and fear some transference is occurring.

OK, thanks Bill. When I look at our calendar for next year I will ensure where possible that our tourneys end at least a week before the end of each rating period. Am I correct in understanding then that the final dates would usually be:

March ratings - tourney completed by February 28th/29th
June ratings - tourney completed by May 31st
September ratings - tourney completed by August 31st
December ratings - tourney completed by November 30th

assuming that we (1) notify the VIC Ratings Officer ahead of time, and (2) submit within a very short time period after completion (e.g. 24-48 hours)?

That's the 2nd Centrelink mention I've seen from you recently Belthasar, and I recall another one from some months back. Have they been giving you a hard time again?

Incidentally, I can't thank them enough. My dear ol' Mum recently separated from her husband due to ill health. We misunderstood the nature of the reporting requirements for different types of income. Anyway, Centrelink pro-actively contacted us and help us sort it out, with the end result being that she received a back-payment of nearly $2K plus an increase in her pension of nearly $100/fortnight as well.

I expect that's going to rub salt into the wound with you, but all my experiences with them have been good ones. Maybe its just your local staff that are the problem?

Good to hear they did something right. You wouldn't believe the grief I've had with them over the years. Now they've stolen six months of my life by not allowing me to study this semester (long story).

Hello everyone,

Are we getting a wee bit sidetracked??

Take care and God Bless, Macavity

BTW there will be a couple of Melbourne Events rated this list; to be sent to Milic today or tomorrow; does anyone know about the Junior masters? And who is to send it in? If it really became necessary, I could ascertain who got what scores against whom and create a swiss perfect file myself...

Also, Bill, are there any events that should have been rated last list that are outstanding? If so, which ones??

Take care again, M

As such February 26th, May 28th, August 28th and November 27th would be much better as they give the State Ratings Offcier more time to process especially if they need to add any new players. It also gives me time having received them to query any errors that may arise.

Take care again, MI received the Australian Masters, Vic Junior Masters and Hobsons Bay Yarraville Cup from Milic today. He informs me that Cordover decided he would not rate the Vic Junior Masters Reserves as it was played at a rapid time control.

It isnt necessarily easy for me to determine whcih interstae events may not have been submitted that should have. I generally leave that up to the State rating Offciers, however if I can determine ( via say the ACF Bulletin, various web sites or even from here) that an event was held that I would expect to been submitted for rating but hasnt been then I will normally query that States Ratings Officer.

I would expect the MCC U200 and U1600 events which finish mid August to be sent to Milic for rating in this period.
Also the Dandenong grade events appears to finish August 24th and as such should also be able to be submitted this period.
The 2005 Box Hill Chess Club Rainbow Championships finishes August 16th and should also make it.

Hello Bill. Have you recieved any SA tournaments yet? Will follow up if you have not. By my reckoning there should be, Interclub A grade and B grade, Queens Birthday weekender, Uni Open, PAC Challenge and the state juniors championships for the normal list. For the rapid list there should be the Winter Rapid.
Scott

EDIT: The City of Adelaide Championships finish on the 23rd so you may get them as well I guess

I have spoken with Alex and learnt he is no longer SA's rating officer, and there currently is no ratings officer, so seeing I am in possesion of all of the tournament files that need to be submitted for rating I am going to do this.

I predict my new rating will be 100-150 points lower than my current rating and I will still be overrated on current form by 250-300 points. :hmm:

I'm looking forward to coming back up from a disreputable #4 to a more respectable #2 in Tas on the next ratings list. Pavicic's had an absolute shocker in the Burnie Club Champs and will lose a truckload, and my 5.5/6 in the Tas Open, albeit including some very low rated opponents, should give me the three points I need to overtake Billam, who didn't play in this period. Furthermore if I perform OK in the Hobart Weekender on Sep 10-11 I should be able to stay there because Billam's form in the HICCC (which goes in next period) hasn't been good.

#2 in Tas is probably right for me as the current #1, 2003 state champ Peter Knight, is the only active-listed player I still have a minus score against (+1=6-2). However Knight hasn't played since mid-04 and may well have dropped out of competitive chess.

Nice to know how perfectly disreputable you think #5, #6 ... #n must be. Perhaps you should fully insult your Taswegian inbreds and say anyone below #10 is a swing seat sniffer.

What a pointless attempt at a cheap shot. These things are obviously relative to one's aspirations, past record and level of skill.

Bollocks a cheep shot. Your arragance shows through. You think #4 is shitful. If it aint gold/sliver/bronze you think it a disreputable performance. How much do you want to put others down? :naughty: I spent my life persuiding others that top quartile is "winning" and people like you crap on them.

Kevin,

Good to hear you will be rocketing up the standings. Albeit assisted by the poor form of one or two others and the non-participation of third. :)

Matt,

Top quartile is still elitist to 75% of competitors and mundane to the remainder. Goals have to be individually set. Kevin's post was slightly self-indulgent (as was mine) but it is tradition for members to speculate as to their rating shifts in the last week before a new list is produced. I took the post as facetious anyway as his 'rivals' were mostly the architects of their own demise. ;)

Garvin,

using the g-word is a dangerous pasttime. ;)

This predictions stuff sounds like fun. I think my rating should be up into the 1300's due to a win over a 1500+, and draws against a 1500-ish and a 1700-ish ... but I did have a loss and a draw against previously unrated players, so I am not sure how that will affect things. Perhaps it depends on whether they get a rating in this period or not?

Ian Rout
24-08-2005, 11:26 AM
Well I think I meet Matthew's humility requirements, I should be going down fifty-something (very approximately, I don't have the heart to try to calculate it).

Not that there is anything wrong with this, a lower rating puts more pressure on your opponents.

In the WA June newsletter we showed the players in ranking order for June, plus we gave their March ranking. This enables players of all standards to easily compare themselves relative to that of their main rivals and set goals. You can also easily see who has just shot up or down without having to look at previous rating lists. I can also foresee that in September I am likely to drop below the top 20 from 16th :(

Since showing ppl in ranking order (1st done for March ratings) we have not received a single complaint about not having players in alphabetic order :)

It is by my standards because I have historically been better than that over quite a long period. However, feel free to just completely ignore that point and bait away in the hope of igniting a flamewar - but yes, if that's really what you want, please do it in non-chess.

I spent my life persuiding others that top quartile is "winning" and people like you crap on them.

Not at all. For instance, if you were here and reached the second quartile, I would commend you on your acheivement. Again, these things are relative.

(checks to make sure Matt would not actually qualify for our second quartile given our recent influx of juniors. No, it's OK, he's still 43 points shy.)

GURU induced juniors ?.

starter

Yes and no. Actually most of those on the current ratings list were part of a small pickup in junior activity that was already happening pre-Guru, mainly through the voluntary work of Tony Sturges in schools in Hobart. By my count 13 of 21 Tas juniors with ratings were already active in adult chess before David became involved. However the proportions are rapidly changing as more and more "Guru-induced juniors" show up in adult tournaments. We certainly have that to thank for the near-record field at the recent Tas Open for instance, which included about eight Cordover-wave debutants.

Hello Freddy,

My understanding is that Bill is still doing the acf ratings. Our ratings officer up here, Pat Byrom, informed me that he has sent off to Bill alot of sp files and has received replies for a couple of them. I understand from Pat that there have been a few changes to how things are done regarding checking duplicate names or something like that.

Maybe someone from the acf council can give more information

Hi Bill, are we to take it that the list as provided above is to be the final list of rated events for this list? If not, when will you be stopping accepting of further files?

Also will guess that I will be above 2000 but below 2050; close?

Take care and God Bless, Macavity

Hi Bill, are we to take it that the list as provided above is to be the final list of rated events for this list? If not, when will you be stopping accepting of further files?I have received the WA Championship and I am expecting a rapid from NSW late on the evening of 31st August and a few more from Victoria.
I believe the CV Ratings Officer is chasing up the following:
Ballarat Club Championship
Ballarat Club Chamionship Reserves
Box Hill Rainbow Championships
Box Hill Knockout Rapid
MCC Raipalis Memorial (although he is not sure if this was played)
Melbourne Winter Round Robin

If they dont make it wont be his fault but the organisers/arbiters.

I generally accept events from State Rating Officers up until around 6pm on the last day prior to publication (in this case August 31st), and sometimes a little later for rapids as I am prepared to delay the rapid publication by 24 hours if necessary.
Obviously the sooner I get them the better as it gives me more time to raise any queries that may arise with the State Rating Officers.

Also will guess that I will be above 2000 but below 2050; close? You are within that range.

Thanks for the confirmation too!

will the ratings be posted on schedule or will there be delays like last time to accommodate for lagging submissions?

This isnt an opt in list, otherwise I would have many people requesting me to add them to the list.

I send it to all State Rating Officers, the ACF webmaster, a couple of state membership registrars who actually allocate the id numbers which relate to membership numbers and a few journalists who have requested it who actually publish all or a part of the information.

All other individuals including state officials who think they need it urgently should organise to get it directly from their state ratings officers.

I have received the following events from the CV Ratings Officer.

23/08/2005 8 7 Box Hill Rainbow Championships (Blue Group)
23/08/2005 9 7 Box Hill Rainbow Championships (Green Group)
23/08/2005 6 5 Box Hill Rainbow Championships (Orange Group)
23/08/2005 6 5 Box Hill Rainbow Championships (Red Group)
23/08/2005 6 5 Box Hill Rainbow Championships (Yellow Group)

He informs me that although he has emailed a number of people regarding the Ballarat Club Championships he has not received them and has had no reply.

I am not expecting to receive any more normal rated events.
The only rapid rated event I expect to receive this evening is the Metropolitan Leagues Rapid play from NSW.

The numbers were down a bit this year.
In previous years, our life has been so bright we had to wear shades.

I am likely to move your car randomly around parking lots so you can't find it.
I might kick your dog.
I could leave libidinous messages on your boss's voice mail in your voice!.
I am insidious and subtle
I am dangerous and terrifying to behold.
I am also a rather interesting shade of mauve.
:P

Hi Kaitlin,
the song is Bad times, about a computer virus, if I'm right. who performs it??
Very funny in this context too,

Take care and God Bless, Macavity

hi kaitlin,

i was about to ask ...

"what have you been drinking?"

or

"what are you on?"

but then i noticed you've spelt everything correctly ... i think

however i guess when you are not playing rated games the imminent release of the next ratings is a moot point to you so ok ...

liven the thread up with poetry or song lyrics

at least you have the nous not to be distracted by beauty pageants

you're far too sophisiticated for that, heh?

Hello Everyone,

I have just finished a conversation with Bill Gletzos regarding the September rating list.

He was awaiting the NSW rapid play files mentioned above last night, and they arrived about 20 minutes after he went to sleep.

He was working at an employer other than his usual workplace today, and was unable to process the final event.

He suggested that he will be posting the details on here at or after 8.30pm tonight and also sending them to state ratings officers at the same time.

He will be sending them to Paul Broekhuyse for publication on the ACF site as soon as Paul can manage it,

Hope this answers people's questions in this matter,

Take care and God Bless, Macavity

Thanks for the update, macavity. I sensed a lot of activity on the board today was as a direct result of people fishing for news on the Spring ratings.
