Hi Everybody

So of the 7 Victorians who ventured north, only one finished below 50%

And Igor And Mehmedalijia Dizdarevic in the outright placings, and Zdravko Lojanica only half a point out of the outright placings with a category prize!! Well done all!!!

Sorry Igor that your unbeaten run has ended, how many was it this time?

I also see that there is a lot of big peaches in ACT, one of which has every reason to be proud, as do those who know him,

Take care all, and God Bless, Macavity

Gray, I am almost positive that it is the same one; one could always check the rating list master file and see if there are two listed? unlikely as they generally ask for an initial in that case to separate the two persons.

Also when Bill Gletsos used to post the ratings of Forum members, it would be easy to check what he was listed as being rated... Unless both of these prospective Barry Cox's had the same rating too??

PS Actually I do know

Yes, lamentably it was the same one and I played a shocker (perf of 1270). Started by losing in rounds 1 and 2 to players rated 600 and 800 points lower than myself! (put that in your competitive index Trev ;) ) Then proceeded to luckly win against a player rated 1200 points lower than myself although I could have easily lost that game too!

After that my play improved with wins over my next too opponents (although both rated well below me again) and finally finishing with 2 draws against Shannon Oliver and James Morris.

So while I finished with 4/7 the tie break justifiably puts me at the bottom of the 4s and a final placing with tie-breaks of 30. In rating order I was 13th.

My best game was probably against ACT player Quan Nguyen (1477) in round 5. Playing for complications with a time deficit I found a pleasing mating combination involving a knight sac and leaving the queen en prise for a move. It was a tough game and Quan put up a good fight. The final 2 games were 11 and 14 move draws respectively.

Regarding the ACF Master File there are 2 Barry Cox's. Neither has recorded a middle initial (although I do have one, my middle name is James) but one is marked as a NSW Player and the other a QLD player. I have never lived or played chess in QLD so I can only assume it is someone else but who is (as far as I know) now inactive.

Oh, on the positive side I got to meet Jesse Sales ( ), Libby, Shannon, Diane Illingworth and Max of course, Jim Flood and Lee. The tournament was playing in a good spirit and I personaly saw very little discord. The playnig hall was a little squishy and one wonders what will happen if they do manage to build numbers up to 100 as is their goal. The only other issue that comes to mind was the playing hall did get very warm and stuffy. I imagine owing to the previously mentioned squishiness.

I tried to help out but I could originally only find the pairings for round 3...and I have already posted that competitive index earlier in this thread.
Following that action, I got distracted reading a very old long thread about under-rated players around Canberra. ;)

ps Apology for the sentence beginning with the -ing word. I know it is bad form. Are they called participles; and still a no-no?

Barry is right that the room was overheated and stuffy. I thought this may have been a concession to Sydney visitors who are unaccustomed to Canberra winters but if Barry felt the heat then it was overdone. I hope they will be less heavy-handed on the heating next year, and maybe briefly open the windows between rounds to change the air.

On the other hand I don't know if the squishiness needs to be a problem as there may be the possibility of overflow into other rooms.

Also on the plus side the lighting at the venue is excellent - many chess tournaments are held on licensed premises where dinginess is an essential part of the ambience. The room also had carpeted floor which assists in noise reduction. Overall I would rate the School of Art as a very good venue.

One problem IMHO was the width of the tables..... they were too wide.....I like to be closer to the board.

Both sound like good improvements.

On the other hand I don't know if the squishiness needs to be a problem as there may be the possibility of overflow into other rooms.

Yes, but 100 players is a 40% increase on this year so the spill over rooms would need to be substantial. Also additional aribiters may be necessary in that circumstance.

Also on the plus side the lighting at the venue is excellent - many chess tournaments are held on licensed premises where dinginess is an essential part of the ambience. The room also had carpeted floor which assists in noise reduction. Overall I would rate the School of Art as a very good venue.

Yes, floor coverings and lighting were both good.

One problem IMHO was the width of the tables..... they were too wide.....I like to be closer to the board.

Personally I didn't have an issue with the table sizes width or playing 3 boards per table on the lower boards was fine. The squishiness was more to do with the width of the walkways between tables.

And I was there too!

Yes, another fact that made the event all the more enjoyable.

Thank you Trent...The journey was lightened by your presence as well.
Actually I enjoyed the company of many this tournament, renewing friendships and hopefully making more.
Will try to make it back next year....(now that I know where the better toilets are!)

Just spoke to Jesse about 30 secs ago. He is absolutely beside himself. Hopefully, we can convince BJ to put his pic on the cover of ACM. He will be the hero in my beloved RP if that happens.

So, why has Barry sacced his old account and also turned off PM's?

So, why has Barry sacced his old account and also turned off PM's?

I'm trying to limit the time I spend on here and being a moderator was taking more time than I seemed to have. Having PMs on is a trigger to visit the board and hence that is why they are disabled. But don;t worry Belthasar, Rincewind will be back... one day.
