Not a bad bit of publicity for an Aussie.....Between the surprises of the day the defeat of Bulgarian GM Iván Cheparinov at hands of Australian Nick Speck must be reviewed.----

If Speck does well it should make Olympic selection very interesting!

Speck is now on 4 out of six after losing his 4 and 5th round games. He lost to an IM in round 4 before losing to a player rated 2135 in round 5. He beat an unrated player in round 6

Speck has scored 3.5/6 against an av rating of 2251, the av rating will be boosted up by his last round game. I think anything less than a win will mean he has underperformed for this tornament, against rated opponents.

Nick has a 2381 rating, and his Scores have been

RD1 ROMERO NARANJO, Irene 1822 1
RD2 GARCIA CAVA, Juan 2009 1
RD3 CHEPARINOV, Ivan 2550 IM 1
RD4 VEINGOLD, Alexander 2478 IM 0
RD5 PALMA MACIAS, Alberto 2149 0
RD6 MARTINEZ, Juan M UR 1
RD7 PEREZ GARCIA, Roberto UR 1
RD8 MOVSZISZIAN, Karen 2497 GM .5
RD9 CAMPOS MORENO, Javier 2498 IM ?? TBP

Shame he didn't play the Aus Champs but really good result all the same. In the final standings, there were 7 GMs and 7 IMs ranked above him and 6 GMs and 8 IMs ranked below him (non-finishers excluded). Can't expect much better than that!

I guess on this performance, his australian champs no show was a good move, and his play in Spain would have done his Olympiad chances no harm at all
