Hi Matthew,

Nice to see you are going outside and hopefully work on ACF Coaching Acreditation.
You are a BB character Matthew and I've been told by many many people that you are a pleasant intelligent person in the flesh and someone else on the BB.

Anyway I am looking forward to the day we can have a few beers and socialise so i can see the real MS - its a pity you could not come to the Champs in Adelaide I'm sure you would have really enjoyed it.

Cheers

ok, so this means that barry is an admin

but then why will he not come out and confirm or deny it? what is the big secret - it shows when he comes in that he has the same admin status as Paul and the Grand Poobah...so why cant he say "Yes, I am an admin" or "No, I am not an admin"?

When I asked this in the olymiad thread, Barry says he was confused as well...

so is there a system glitvh? :?

Barry is Super Moderator, like Paul and Kevin.

Paul requested that Barry's account be upgraded to this level.

Super Admin - Me
Admin - Board Settings
Super Moderator - Delete / Edit posts etc anywhere.
Moderator - Delete / edit posts etc in allocated place.

E.g say Bill wanted a Ratings discussion forum and people were ok with adding a forum like this, he could moderate that forum only, it would make Bill a moderator..

Yes, I was made an admin to take some of the workload off of Paul and Kevin. Since being made an admin I've only had to edit one post so it has taken much time (I already invest the time to read just about every post anyway - although I skim through the posts from the Pres Bush fan club :) ) No prizes for guessing the post.

Burnie roadtrip for Tas Champs this weekend so any moderation needed before Monday evening, address it to Paul or Barry.

Should be a good strong field this weekend. Lim Yee Weng (F2311), who I understand has qualified for an FM title, is top seed for the tournament but ineligible for the title.

It doesn't even rhym

Sorry! Did know it had to. Here is a rhyming one which I like to read around this time of year. It's by John Scott of Amwell from the 18th Century and called "Ode XIII" or...

The Drum

I hate that drum's discordant sound,
Parading round, and round, and round:
To thoughtless youth it pleasure yields,
And lures from cities and from fields,
To sell their liberty for charms
Of tawdry lace, and glittering arms;
And when Ambition's voice commands,
To march, and fight, and fall, in foreign lands

I hate that drum's discordant sound,
Parading round, and round, and round:
To me it talks of ravaged plains
And burning towns, and ruined swains,
And mangled limbs, and dying groans,
And widow's tears, and orphan's moans;
And all that Misery's hand bestows,
To fill the catalogue of human woes.

 Don't stand too close, the "behaviour" warning had it right.

I'll bear that in mind, but as it's outside breeding season at the moment, I'm thinking they will be relatively well behaved. I hope so as I dragged my wife to a one of these small widelife parks on our honeymoon and she was attacked by a duck there (albeit comically). I suspect if one of these (much larger) fowl took a dislike to her it could be my last visit to one of these sort of places for a while ;)

Kevin Bonham
27-04-2004, 03:37 AM
My brother had a bad run with fauna parks, not only being attacked by a CBG but also needing stitches after being mistaken for cuttlefish by a sulphur-crested cockatoo.

My only similar experience involved the behavioural problems of an ageing wombat called Bruce (the name based on having a similar temper to then RSL chief Bruce Ruxton.) It is little known that wombats can run at 40 km/h, about the speed of the world's fastest human sprinters. I have seen them do this quite often, but I first discovered it the hard way after Bruce spied me from maybe 50 metres away and, as was his inclination, charged. Expecting to outrun him easily, I was surprised to find that he was rapidly narrowing the gap between me and safety. Then I tripped over a ditch, and before I could get up, he had ripped a sizeable hole in my trouser leg.

You can hope but I don't like your chances. We've had a number of nights in the region of -5 in the last week or so and the maximum last weekend was forecast as 7 - not sure if it made it but considering the wind chill factor that was academic. Today the sun has still to be sighted, which is a little unusual, Canberra winters are cold but often sunny after the fog clears.

hey Amiel,

I have been in Sydney for a few days, and I must have picked the 2 days that all car owners celebrated their ownership by driving around on the public roads. Bet you are glad that the traffic is not like that all the time.

Woke up on Tuesday morning to a Sydney overcast sky. Looked rather sinister to me, Amiel, but an hour later the sun had burnt off the effect. Sure is nice to have a sunny (winters) day in Sydney; beats Melbourne's cold temperature hands down.

Is it just me or does the whole board seem so much more pleasant not to mention peaceful with Matt away.

Bill

I think the last time the board changed much was when fg7 went away; if anyone could cause arcing up in general terms it was the #1 poster from Fitzroy.
So to answer your question; yes it is just you who is more pleasant with Matt away.

You did mean the question to be read with that implied punctuation, I take it? ;)

I can think of a number of others who read here who would agree with me.

He's been a bit quiet lately.

Yeah, sorry about that. Contributing factors include:

* Difficulty getting back into the loop after so long offline.
* Unusually active social life - going to lots of gigs and parties, even in one case DJing etc.
* Personal distractions.
* Degree of disinterest in winning the same old arguments against the same old suspects over and over again - not losing interest in roasting nonsense but getting a bit bored with blowtorching the same old cinders no matter how good I am at it; sometimes, life's too short.
* Serious troll attack on other forum last week (troll eventually banned after heavy time-consuming moderation, which was quite significant as it was the first banning in a couple of years).

I'll probably be staying quite low-profile until I come back from Mt Buller and then making a serious effort to get back into the swing of things and back to normal posting volume. Still paying attention to post reports but not doing that much other moderation right now.

It’s all come so rapidly...
Seeing as we are coming home soon and I am currently completing my last day of work, I will not be around ‚here’ as much over the next few weeks. Well, perhaps enough to play a move a day in my Corr. game against Garvin and check the latest news.
Regarding my moderating, this will not be possible in the forseeable ‚short’ future.
As for the book, I am still working on it, but progress is really slow at the moment. I am aiming at a Doeberl Cup deadline. Would be very nice.
Anyway have a Merry Christmas and I will be seeing you all in the New Year.

hey AR, I'll be in Manila from Friday for two weeks. Any place I should visit or avoid??

If it has been raining heavily then go to Pagsanhan Falls, south of Manilla an hour or two. With guides you shoot the rapids and maybe even down some small waterfalls. They do everything for you. But haggle about the price -- they love seeing a whitey.

Baguio is the cool summer retreat high up in the mountains, you can play and gamble on chess there in Burnham Park, where Spassky and Fisher played for the world title.

Chess books are cheap as there are budget reprints of US titles. I think from the National Book Shop stores.

In Baguio you can buy giant timber chess sets from good quality lumber that will last a lifetime, weighing a ton. You can even put orders in. Specify narra timber if possible.

Quiapo markets have small timber chess sets of standard size, before very cheap and top quality but I don't know about now. Avoid mango tree lumber.

On Philippine airlines sometimes they will give you free internal flights, Borokai (forgotten how to spell) is a nice trip with beautiful beach and island for snorkelling. Is a bit hard to find quality beaches, either too much seeweed, or rocky, or muddy water. Watch out for red tide.

Warning: you can love and hate the people. On public transport, be very wary of anyone sitting next to you, they will do deliberately to pickpocket you. They never fooled me, I caught them a few times, but careful they don't stab you if you catch them.

The Rizal museum is worthy at some fort in Manila.

Take western condoms with you as Asian brands are unsuitable.

Despite assurances in OZ my credit cards were not accepted in ATMs, I actually had to go inside the bank with my passport, so attempt in office hours just in case.

Frankly speaking, China has a lot more to see of very famous things.

If you want to make the locals happy take an armful of decent chocolate over. Just Cadburys bars from Woollies. There chocs. over there are diluted so they love the real thing, even if melted by the time they receive. They just put in fridge for awhile. Before could be unlimited but now over 20 bars may be considered commercial quanity.

Check the area you are going to does not have diseases, most places are okay.

You may find the locals (relos?) may want to take you to the girlie bars so they get the chance to go themselves -- you are the excuse they tell their wives. Leave your wife at home.

No, starter I was being serious.

You see I've been having problems with my home PC (the one I run the ratings on) for the past week.
Symptoms include:
1) sudden hangs with hard drives suddenly becoming unavailable.
2) no hard drives available in bios on bootup.
3) bios suddenly switching the primary master to D: drive and primary slave to C: drive for no reason.

Drives work perfectly when I tested them in a machine at work especially under load.

Reinstalling XP Pro didnt help. Looks like the Motherboard has gone flakey.

So I've decided to retire the dual AMD 1800MP system altogether and replace it with a new Opteron system running a pair of 252 Opterons. I should have it by end of next week.

First one to name the speaker of these approximate last words wins reputation. No marks for "Matthew Sweeney".When you say "approximate", are you referring to the erroneous use of the adverb "maybe" rather than the auxiliary verb with verb "may be"? If so, I'll try Laurence Oates.

Very close ... it was one of his rescuers, Captain Oates:

Oates was the 'very gallant gentleman' who walked to his death in a blizzard, hoping to save his comrades on Scott's disastrous South Pole expedition in 1912. As he crawled from their tent on to the ice in temperatures of -40°C, Oates achieved immortality with the famous parting remark: 'I am just going outside and may be some time.'

It's funny you said Scott because I thought it was Scott too, but when I checked it I realised it was Oates. Yes sorry the reputation goes to kegless. But you may be able to redeem yourself in the future...

By the way kegless, the reason I said "approximate" was that the original words I believe were "I am just going outside and may be some time" so Matt's quoting was not quite correct but his intended reference was clear.

Here's the link to the site Frosty posted that quote from, if anyone's interested. Some of it ain't pretty:

By the way kegless, the reason I said "approximate" was that the original words I believe were "I am just going outside and may be some time" so Matt's quoting was not quite correct but his intended reference was clear. Right. But I wasn't just being a grammar geek. I needed to put the space in 'maybe' to assist in my search. :classic:

It is possible I have. I was about a week behind with my SMH's but have caught up. Just checked and have 2 previous weeks but not that one. Ditched at Sydney airport as overloaded.

What meant to bring up was that in Spectrum section they asked why are there separate chess comps for females when physical strength is not necessary. I thought the answers were not the best, and were not from chess folk I recognised.

Now, now. No need to be sarcastic :naughty: Since its obvious the Sydney Philistines on this board don't read the Good Weekend, it was a 4-page article on the exploration of the South Pole, including our aforementioned Oates quote. Which I thought was a bit uncanny, in view of our (unconnected) earlier discussion on it.

this was answered at the time, and I think it has been mentioned earlier in an ACT thread which I never read. There were no big names amongst the adults so no sensation.

Why is we never hear from NT chess, and WA chess? Do they exist?

I checked the ACF site and NT may not exist?

Re the last two sentences:

WA chess certainly exists. Haydn Barber is the State President and WA hosted the Australian Junior Championships 2004. Isn't Rob - one of our fairly regular posters - from WA?

The position re NT chess is that a couple of years ago there was some activity in the NT with a Chess Association of the Northern Territory being formed and incorporated under local legislation. At the time we were informed that there were two clubs, one in Darwin and one in Alice Springs. The ACF Council affiliated the CANT and their delegate participated in one meeting. Thereafter there has been no contact with them. Both the e-mail addresses we have for them bounce and they have no current web page. As a result the ACF National Conference at Mt Buller 2005 disaffiliated the CANT. I am sure that we would be happy to have them back again but there is no current evidence of any chess activity in the NT of which the ACF is aware.

Denis,
Bill seems to have been too busy yesterday to look at this issue. What do you think?

Bill, can you put it to the approp body, that members of all future rep teams and officials, make a stat dec or some other approp declaration, that they will abide by all requests of FIDE to participate in drug testing.

And that if refuse such requests by FIDE, and the teams' games are disqualifed, that the offending member must compensate all the other members of the team for their expenses of the trip

Gone in about 6 hours (if I ever get around to packing). back 1 August.

Hope to put up reports from Belfort - or should that be Mulhouse? The bloody French have moved us from our very convenient hotel in Belfort, to a town (Mulhouse) which is 1/2 hour away by train. The said it was because the hotel unexpectedly had repairs to rooms, so not enough room for us. I phoned the hotel to check and unfortunatley the story is true, however the whole hotel isn't closed, so we are still being discriminated against - something to do with the 105 French players who are particiapting who I am sure all have very convenient hotels.

Bit of light relief - they sent an e-mail on the 21st of June to inform the change. They didn't send it to me - don't know why probably too scared to! however who did they send it to - your friend and mine - George Howard. :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall:
Of course he sent this urgent and very important e-mail on to me - NOT!

Our local games shop has ChessMaster 8000 on sale for around $10.00 (only $8.00 on sale!). Distributor is: www.red-ant.com.au ... we just bought a copy yesterday. The website only lists ChessMaster 6000 though, so its worthwhile looking around I guess. Any clubs wishing to distribute could probably buy them from Red Ant at wholesale price, sell them for $20-odd on club nights, and make a small margin.
