View Full Version : Just a thought for the juniors here

If there are enough juniors inclined to play a scheduled internet tournament on icc, I/we might run one. We could do teams of juniors from different states if there are enough. So far, Sam is willing to play for the Victorian team :)

"***** I am currently thinking of organising a team tourn for Aus juniors only "ICC Aus Juniors Team Tourn", teams of states: nsw, vic, act, therest. Committee (team captains) includes: me(JasonHu)(Nsw), Sam Chow(besterjester)(Vic), Junta(nekochabo) (Act), Moulthun(molton) and James Obst(ratty)(TheRest). They will be the ones who will organise their teams respectively. I am hoping to get 10 players for each team, but depending how many people we can get, that can be changed.

Tourn format is DRR(double round robin) with time control of "5 1". This will allow the faster players some social time and slower players some time to think. This is a private tourn, so date/place will be delivered when the time is right to avoid randoms showing up :)

If you do not have an account on icc, you will be able to create a 7 day trial account. So if you are a junior, come and have some fun! There will be no entry fee and the tournament is purely organised by juniors. If everything is successful, we'll do this on a more regular basis.

Contacts: Me: jiaxian_hu@hotmail.com
Sam Chow: cme_csamc@hotmail.com
Junta Ikeda: elf_excited43@hotmail.com
Moulthun Ly: funky_monkey937@hotmail.com

But first, i will need people to show some interest. I am not on here often, so don't expect any instant replies :) (If you want instant answers, i suggest you go on icc) REMEMBER: this is still only just an early idea, confirmations will need to be made and if its a total disaster, then oh well... :) :)

I am not a junior, nor do I have an account on ICC, but ideas like this makes me wish i was both. This is a good idea Jason, I hope it goes well.

Sounds like a great idea Jason. I am sure my kids will be interested (well not Shannon as she is no longer a junior - 19 today :( ) I'll get them to talk to junta at the club tonight.

Thanks Freddy and Jenni. :)

The team captains are informed when the tournament is to be held, please ask them for the time it will take place. The tournament will take about 1hr 10mins, playing all games is encouraged. Here's some players we've managed to round up so far and are playing (in no particular order):
Team NSW: Jason, Cronan, Justin Huang, Blair Mandla, Ed Yap, Jonathan Shen, Bob Liang
Team ACT: Junta, Gareth, Michael, Miona, Sherab, Kenzo, Andrew, Thomas, Tor
Team VIC: Sam Chow, Zhigen Lin, Derek & Sally Yu
Team TheRest: Moulthun Ly, James Obst, Tristan Stevens

Players who are not in the teams yet, hurry and get in on the action! Especially those in Vic and TheRest(including Qld, SA,WA,Tas and NT!!)

How about playing on FICS? That server is free for all.

with due respect to Rincewind and to JasonHu

there is already a thursday night (sporadic but in time hopefully less so...)chesschat tourney on FICS which could do with a little more promotion

Jason is arranging his tournaments on ICC on which there are "ways" of obtaining free time for the duration of the event concerned ...

i'll leave it there ...

OK!!! There will offically be 8 players per team. Most of the captains have done well to form a team to represent their state, however no names will be mentioned for those who haven't managed to pull out any players.

On an another note: TheRest team is desperate for some players!!!!
Please contact Moulthun Ly and James Obst if you are a junior who can play chess, and are in Qld, SA, WA, NT or Tas. Their emails are: funky_monkey_95@hotmail.com and funky_monkey937@hotmail.com

Most teams are ready to fight it out, and we will be hosting this in a couple weeks. (For those who are in the team, this may not be true :) ). Good luck all!

We had some problems filling the teams, much due to many non-show-ers, but once we got it started, it was smooth sailing from there. We could've used the attendence of the Victorian captain, as we had to abandon the Vic team and make a second Rest team. Anyway, here are the results:

why is this being played on icc instead of fics?

sorry everyone =(
i wish i were there.

i got caught up studying for exams and completely forgot about the event...

i realise that i wouldve caused a lot of inconvenience for you all - players and organisers - and i know it's stupid do have forgotten about it like that; but really, there's nothing more that i can say: i forgot. =(

once again i apologise for any inconvenience ive caused - i heard the tourney ran smoothly after the initial confusion. congrats to TheRest, and i hope you all had fun.

*sigh*

- Sam.

That's a stupid question. Now leave this thread alone.

This is not a stupid question....fics is free icc isn't and not everyone has access to icc.

It is a stupid question. The event is clearly for ICC'ers. If you don't have ICC, for whatever reason, that's your bloody problem.

There is no reason for it to be so. Plenty of groups organise tournaments on FICS or on a combination of ICC and FICS.

Do YOU have anything worthwhile to add to the debate?

I would imagine it was on ICC because most juniors already have ICC Accounts and much news/ scandalous gossip gets discussed on ICC Australian channel (I don't believe that happens on FICS). So ICC is simply more convenient.

In terms of ease of access, the software for both FICS and ICC is simple to download, And as Jason mentioned it is possible to get a free trial ICC Account to play in the tournament. Unless you have already used your trial account then you are in trouble...mwahahahaha

That's how it is now, isn't it? Chit-chat is suddenly 'debate'. FMD!

Exactly! I've got nothing against FICS but most players I know are either on playchess or ICC - so I go there.

Someone got up on the wrong side this morning?

The point is people will listen to contructive criticism. Mindless abuse is generally ignored or returned in kind. Seems you have nothing constructive to add.

Have a good day!

Some of us are still fuming at Daniel Sleator's betrayal of everyone who helped build ICC in the first place by commercialising it.

Including me, but when I mention to anyone under the age of 20 who plays on ICC they just give me blank looks.

wow. yep, that was a few years back :D

wasn't sleator called darooba or something?! and his brother a famous writer.
they were the days back when icc was free.
even my 'free' chess21.com account has been disabled now :(

Darooha. And for those that don't know, Sleator was a Maths Professor at Carnegie-Melon who offered to assist the guys (CMU students) who developed ICS as a free project. Eventually his "assistance" turned into a takeover and he privatised the site. There was a heated debate at the time and Sleator copped a fearful hammering. And pretty much all of it was deserved. Even to this day, when his name is mentioned to me (usually in the context of some Maths papers he authored) I take great pains to explain that he is a "****", a "**********" and a "***********".
