Not good enough, the NSWCA should have garanteed all the prize money. It is a total cop out to say $6,700 in prize money, only if we get 100 punters to play.

If $5,000 is garanteed then that's what you advertise. I think it's dishonest to do otherwise considering the dollars you have in the bank.

Now I know someone will say: you can't keep losing money on every tournament? and that maybe true, but this is the State title.

As only those who are members of the NSWCA can play and every member pays to join. It should be that NSWCA fully funds it.

AFAIK this sort of thing has been pretty much accepted practice in Australian chess for a while now, I don't find it particularly misleading or scandalous. Generally speaking if your revenue decreases, you cut costs. Over to you, Bill.

So why pay a NSWCA membership fee? Don't get me wrong I'm all for the fee, but some of it should go toward supporting this tournament.

Firstly I think that organisers should only advertise fully guaranteed prize pools, for two reasons. A) It forces the organisers to do a better job of budgeting their tournaments B) To not do so leaves the organisers open to charges of shonky advertising tricks.

I have been involved in 2 major events where prizes were reduced because of a shortfall in entries. One was the Australian Open in Canberra 2000/01 where a number of people complained despite the entry form only guaranteeing a portion of the prizes. The consensus from the organisers was that in hindsight we should have just advertised a fully guaranteed prize pool.
The other was a Gosford tournament in 1998(?) where fantastic prizes were on offer, but the entry number fell about 50% short of the (wild) projections. When the organiser got up to announce the rather substantial drop in prizes I was expecting a full scale riot. Instead the players just shrugged their shoulders and went on with the tournament.

Not good enough, the NSWCA should have garanteed all the prize money. It is a total cop out to say $6,700 in prize money, only if we get 100 punters to play.It is entirely valid to say it.
There is $6,700 advertised in prize money and that is based on 100 entries.
The advert makes that clear.

If $5,000 is garanteed then that's what you advertise. I think it's dishonest to do otherwise considering the dollars you have in the bank.It isnt dishonest at all and the NSWCA bank balance is irrelevant.
It is abundandtly clear that the prize fund adds up to $6,700 and that this is based on 100 entires.
It is also abundantly clear that the NSWCA is guaranteeing $5,000 of the prize fund irrespective of entries.

If we didnt tie the $6700 to 100 entries and we got 140 players then you would obviously have no problem with us paying only the advertised $6,700 in prize money and us pocketing the rest as profit. :hand:
Pull the other one it plays jingle bells.

Now I know someone will say: you can't keep losing money on every tournament? and that maybe true, but this is the State title.Incorrect it is not the state Title. The State title is the NSW Championship.

As only those who are members of the NSWCA can play and every member pays to join. It should be that NSWCA fully funds it.No, all NSWCA events are self funding.

We see no reason not to tie the prize fund to entries, provided that if you lower the prize due to less entries, then you increase the prize fund if you get more. The situations of the later has been rare in recent times. Last year however the NSW Open met its target and the advertised prize fund was fully paid.

I would gree to that. The $2k "profit" could then be used to boost the next big event.

It is not sensable to try and runn every event as revenue nuetral. It would make sense to make the summ of all events revenue nuetral. Some down $1k some up a $1k

I gree with Press. No headline prize*

I would gree to that. The $2k "profit" could then be used to boost the next big event.Feedback the Council has received previously suggests that many people disagree.

It is not sensable to try and runn every event as revenue nuetral. It would make sense to make the summ of all events revenue nuetral. Some down $1k some up a $1kActually we dont always reduce the prize fund as much as we should. e.g. the numbers in the recent May weekender were only 50% of the numbers required for the listed prizes but instead of paying 50% of the prizes we actually paid 60% and ran at a bigger loss.

Now there is an idea. Although it would cost double, you could enter both. A naturally quick player could play two games at once.

There is nothing specific in the rules to say you can't, but I would imagine there will be someone who sees it as breaking some rule in some way. If I were one of your opponents I would only like it if I was a weaker player and I thought the distraction whould give me an advantage. ;)

What prize ia an unrated player eligible for in the U1600?
There does not seem to be a unrated prize & it could cause some real problems if one of the unrated players turns out to be really strong (EG. has a high rating somewhere else, but not in one in AUS) and wins the major prize.

It's looking like a really good comp - congratulations NSWCA!

Gareth is in the middle of his year 12 end of semester exams (in the ACT these exams count as much as the end of year ones, as we don't do HSC).

I will apologise in advance, as we probably won't be able to stay for prize-giving, as Gareth has an exam on Tuesday morning.

Back before I was president the council had been criticised in years past for doing exactly that. As such the Council at the time took the decison to attempt to make each event revenue neutral.
Successive councils have maintained that view.

If I recall correctly players in event B argued their entry fees should be returned to them via prize money and not used to offset losses in event A.

I was going to say that this reasoning is both selfish and spurious, on the grounds that if the advertised prizes were paid out in full then the organisers should be free to allocate the profits elsewhere, but then I realised it was chessplayers making the complaints.

Just heard that Junta Ikeda beat Ian Rogers last night!

Thanks Brian. I'll have that in the ACTJCL Bulletin I'm writing now so if there's any error I can just quote you as the source ;)

Bill, the right margin of the draw in my computer is a bit blocked out. But after round 3 there were 3 players on 3 points, but from what I am able to see it appears different?

Lucky we didn't send any more of our ACT Juniors up there to bother you!

(I'll now beat a quick retreat in case the final rounds don't maintain the otherwise great results!)

George beat Solomon in the 4th round!! It looked like Solo sacked an exchange for an attack that didn't work out. I didn't see much after that but George said he was very lucky after the game.

So he's the only playeron 4/4, playing Tomek in the 5th round so he has a very good chance to go 5/5.

That will teach those Mexicans, public service bludgers and bannabenders to get in the way in OUR comp.

I think Tomek has upset George before but. We haven't got a nickname for George yet - the Chinese Dragon?

Great result for Igor!

I popped in today to have a look, and I must say I've never seen such a cramped venue before. I'd say there was about half the space that I would like to see for that many people. Board one was in the opposite corner to the door, meaning I had to squeeze between the backs of the chairs up one row trying my best not to disturb people too much. Most games were virtually inaccessible for spectators.

I suppose the analysis room might have been used for the u1600, but that probably would have required a second DOP.

This is a common curse of tournaments that I see way too often. I dont understand why it occurs. Maybe this is another reason why players dont turn up to play, cause they have to climb over other players to move around :uhoh: :wall:
I have even seen it in events where half the hall is not being used. Was the exact same room(s) used as for last years NSW Open?

Well done to Norm Greenwood on coming equal first in the U1600 with 6/7! He deserves something like this after all his tireless chess admin work over many years (and Norm is a fine gentleman too - I don't think I have ever heard anyone say anything bad about him!).

Congrats too to The Chess Nut (Trent Parker) equal 3rd on 5.5/7.

Who is Junta, I have never heard or him (and him of me no doubt)
He's one of very talented ACT Juniors. He turns 13 this year, won the Australian Under 14 title in Mt Buller and a bit over 3 years ago was rated around 600 - this is why we felt we had a rating problem in the ACT.......

Now you could say he was "lucky" to beat Ian, as Ian just went into a deep think on a move and lost on time, in a winning position. However Junta had defended like a tiger and followed up that win, with a win against Berezin. He faded a bit towards the end out of sheer exhaustion I think - he had played so many good players and worked so hard.

I think all our ACT juniors would have been happy with their results, apart from Andrew Brown, who had a very bad last day.

Gareth was very tired from the exams he did last week, (and has 2 more this week), so claimed to be playing very cautious chess. If so, I would hate to see his games when he feels adventurous - his one against Canfell was as about unbalanced as you can get. Apparently Paul B has asked Gareth to send it to him, so you might see it in the e-mail bulletin.

That game between Rogers and Xie was good. Rogers had the better theory. The post mortem, especially, was very entertaining. Xie inserted some mild trash talk which was amicably countered by the GM. The spectators enjoyed very much. Also good to see Flatow paying a visit.

Pics are coming. But since I had to resort to my standard SLR, it'll take me some time to process the pics.

All credit to the Glicko system on that one. I can't imagine anyone gaining 1400 points in 3 years under ELO.

AR, you are a bit lucky, there are a few personalities and many friends etc in the Sydney crowd which "make" the game even for spectators. The occasional odd-bod as well.

Xie's and Agulto's lightning gambling games are a must.

Why don't you organise a tourney - the Pinoys against the Chinese.

All credit to the Glicko system on that one. I can't imagine anyone gaining 1400 points in 3 years under ELO.

This is why I have remained tolerant of Glicko 2 - it has made a huge difference in how fast improving juniors reach a higher rating and thus limits the damage they do along the way.

Junta was a classic case of the problem we had with juniors playing too long in junior clubs.

With the level of entry fees and prizemoney, i think it would do the tournament no harm to use carbon backed scoresheets, so games can be pgn's later.
