In the never ending Bobby Fischer controversy it seems he has finally been granted Icelandic citizenship. The tenth Icelandic GM seems destined to divert his American calling. The Japanese seem willing to release him in such circumstances.

With a population of under 300,000 Iecland now has ten GM's !!!. On that same ratio we should have about 750 Grandmasters!

i'll be serious here and note that fischer still has to be officially granted citizenship by the althingi on monday and as such it will be interesting to see if the committee reccommendation to grant citizenship (as AR hopes) will be enough to end this "saga". i suspect though that the u s administration will play this like a basketball match and try to run it into extra time rather than diplomatically back off.

Fischer having been released earlier in the day and taken to Narita airport in a Icelandic embassy car should in just under an hour be on his way to Iceland.

Yeah and embarrass his poor hosts -- even if what he does say is 66% correct (half-pregnant)
