From today's ACF Newsletter:

ACF Council meeting delayed: Plans to hold the next meeting in Canberra with the Doeberl Cup have been dropped because a suitable room is not available. Instead, the next council meeting will be by conference call on April 11.

This seems very strange....I mean, is it that hard to book a venue for a few hours? Or is there some other reason for the delay?

The plan was to have the meeting at the Doeberl Cup venue (The Italo-Australian Club) with the majority of attendees there in person, but at least 3 people participating by telephone hookup. Due to refurbishments the Italo-Club were not able to provide a room with the require telephone facilities, putting the kybosh on this plan. Hence the rescheduling.

Does this mean Bill won't be joining us in Canberra?

Not necessarily. He may want to beat the reputed Canberra - Sydney speed record of two and a half hours set in the 1950s by a French diplomat in a Jaguar XK120. But taking into account the vastly-improved roads since then he will probably need to break two hours at worst.

ACF Council meets every three months. There was one at Mt Buller (near the end of the event) and this coming one is the first after it.

However the ACF Executive meets separately, not sure what its schedule is.

The ACF Executive has not met either as there has been no need. I understand that under George's Presidency it met about a week before each Council meeting.

Naturally I have been going through a settling-in period as well and have not yet been able to shed my ACTCA Presidency though that will happen at its AGM on 6 April.

But the Council now also has the power to make formal decisions by e-mail vote and this is a useful tool. For example, since Mt Buller, Kevin was appointed as Junior Selection Co-ordinator by e-mail vote, I have called for the States to nominate members of the new Junior Chess Subcommittee (so far with limited success!) and the Council is already considering allocation of the next Australian/Junior Championships by e-mail vote. You can expect an official announcement on that very soon.
