i want to download a freeware chess program that'll run in windows.

it's to give to kids (all weak beginners) who don't have chess software of their own at home.

suggestions?
thanks.

WinBoard and Crafty are free but not particularly easy to use. However this might be more of an obstacle for a senior, rather than a junior. ;)

A fairly basic program that would probably suit weak beginners is GNU Chess.

I can say from experience that, on a decent computer, GNU Chess is far from "weak beginners" level! But you can dumb it down by reducing the time per move. You can get it at http://www.tim-mann.org/chess.html

I dont know if it free to like let everyone use, but when you first come into ChessKit - > where it says "Home" "PlayChess" "Training" "Software" "Trivia" "Miscell" and them other ones. In the "Training" one right down the bottom there is "Sparring Partner An online chess engine written by Lex of Lokasoft for Chess Kit" but underneath it it says " 2004 Chess Kit. All rights reserved."

Maybe you can ask Lex of Lokasoft or someone here if you can use it. I copied it onto my computer to use when I wasnt dialed up.. all of it copied except for the bottom bit and the board just went to light blue dark blue but it works. I didnt use it much casue it always seem to make the same moves and win :( , prob cause I always started the same. But I cant work out how I copied it to my computer but I did cause its there [C:\MyDocuments\MyReceivedFiles\jchess - 49KB Compressed Folder - 15/09/2004 8:16 PM] - maybe I just saved it or something, I forget.

I believe there is an old version of Fritz (5.32??) available for free download on the web somewhere. Trouble is, I'm having trouble locating the URL!

Isn't it available along with the Chessbase Light program, or am I mistaken?

Chessbase Light - Download (http://www.chessbase.com/download/cblight/index.asp)

says it "supports" Fritz 5.

thanks for all the advice.

i ended up with a 5MB winboard download that included GNU. not perfect for beginners but at least they can't make illegal moves.

i doubt if chessbase light could include fritz (chessbase heavy doesn't). be good if it did though.

But it doesn't include Fritz - or at least it didn't when I downloaded it some months ago.

Found it!

Here:
http://www.pcgo.de/aktuell/ausgabe0103/fritz.zip

This is Fritz 5.32, now freeware I believe, but with no opening book.

You can download a compact opening book here:
http://members.aon.at/computerschach/5moves.zip

Just download to Fritz directory and press F11 in Fritz.

Once you have winboard you can use any one of many free engines,
including some aussie ones:

trace
awesome (mine)
lambchop(nz)
kanguruh etc.

I bought chessmaster for $5

Most of the strongest engines these days are UCI. e.g Fruit, Toga, Rybka. Toga II is the best free engine (roughly equal to Fritz 9 and Shredder 9). Rybka is about 30 Euros, and is better than anything commercial or free at the moment.

You can use them with the free GUI program Arena: http://www.playwitharena.com/

Edit:
Wow, you can now get the beta version of Rybka for free:
http://www.rybkachess.com/

This is very strong (beats Fritz, Shredder, Junior etc), and not a lot different to the full version.

I am doing some testing of engines. I suggest that you download Chessbase Light. Then download the free version of Ribka and the latest version of Crafty.

Also look for the latest free versions of Junior, Fritz and Shredder. Using the chessbase interface it is relatively easy to weaken the computers play. JUst give it a very fast time contol and the human a long one.

They don't need a bloody engine, just give them a bag of Ritlin.

Crafty is good, but it's well behind the best free engines now. Go for Rybka, Toga II, Fruit, and if you want more, Spike and the free version of Zappa.

Also look for the latest free versions of Junior, Fritz and Shredder.

The free versions are a waste of time IMO if you want strength. They are hopeless next to decent free engines.

I recommend this one to beginners as it's simple to use.

http://uciengines.de/UCI-Engines/TogaII/togaii.html

This is a good site for loads of free (and very strong) engines.
