Recently I announced in this forum that the Drouin Open was off because I was moving to Kenya, and getting married. Which is why I found myself being questioned when I turned up at the Australia Day weekender at the Melbourne Chess club, when I should have been in Kenya. In a nutshell....my fiancee was forbidden to marry me by the head of the family. Such is the power of patriarchy in Africa. We are working on the problem and hope to find a solution this year. Perhaps a few more goats in the dowry might fix it.
While in Nairobi over Christmas I sought directions to the local chess club and was directed to the casino. That is the extent of local knowledge of chess.
I spent my days in Nairobi going around the markets instructing the sellers of chess sets on where to put the black and white squares when setting up their pieces. I also noticed that many of the lovely engraved chess sets have been painted and decorated with zebras, giraffes etc such that when viewed right way up, the black squares were in the right hand corner. The vendors were devastated when I pointed this out.
So if you see me at the Ballarat Open please understand that if not for the old uncle I would have been in Kenya by now, but in the meantime I intend to play as much chess as I can here in Australia.

I wish you all the best David, perhaps we will face each other again on opposite side of the board like at the MCC weekender. (do you know who I am yet? )
