Thanks for posting all the games, Capa_Fan! Pleased to see Nigel Metge back on the NZ chess scene and having some success. Like you, he has stayed at my house in the past. For a while we were kind of related as his mum and my uncle were together.

Who is Dylan Piwari? A new name to me. What club or O/S player? Tim Reilly is a good scalp.

There are now three. Kirill Polishchuk has been joined by Anthony Ker and Ben Hague on 5 points. Kirill lost to tournament leader, GM Daniel Fernandez (ENG) while Anthony and Ben won against Dylan Piwari and Daniel Gong respectively. Russell Dive drew with IM Brandon Clarke (ENG) to be half a point behind.

Who will be the New Zealand Champion depends mostly on who plays the Grandmasters in the final two rounds. No Kiwis have taken points off Fernandez yet and he is the next opponent for Ben Hague. Ben has however drawn with GM Papin and GM Johansen so should be happy with a hat trick. It is Kirill vs GM Papin, Anthony vs GM Johansen and Russell vs IM Sandler.

The internet would suggest he is ex the East Coast (Gisborne) - "The Dark Horse" movie era.
Spent some time at Melbourne Uni?

Round 8 did not provide any clarity on who will be the New Zealand champion. It just became a lot more crowded in the contenders group. Kirill Polishchuk and Anthony Ker drew against their GM opponents, Papin and Johansen to move to 5.5 points. On 5 points are Ben Hague who lost to tournament leader, GM Daniel Fernandez and Russell Dive who drew with IM Sandler. They are joined by Paul Garbett, Nunilon Fulo and Noel Pinic who all won to give themselves a chance at the title. Even Daniel Gong and Hilton Bennett on 4.5 points have an outside chance if results go their way.

GM Fernandez vs Anthony Ker, Kirill Polishchuk vs IM Sandler, Nunilon Fulo vs Ben Hague, Noel Pinic vs Paul Garbett, Russell Dive vs Daniel Gong and Hilton Bennett vs Tim Reilly.

If 6.5 points is the magic number then 2 players can achieve that score. Should 6 points be enough then there could be 5 names engraved on the Silver Rook and finally, 8 players in the unlikely event of 5.5 points winning the title.

In his game with Ker, Dylan P. made a 'mistake" on move 1. He played the Pirc against someone who has played the Pirc for many years. It did not work.

Congratulations to the NZ Champions for 2020: Kirill Polishchuk (1st win), Ben Hague (2nd win), Paul Garbett and Russell Dive (7th win). The magic number is 6 points. Kirill drew with IM Sandler. That allowed Ben, Paui and Russell with wins over Nunilon Fulo, Noel Pinic and Daniel Gong respectively to join him. Defending champion Anthony Ker had the uneviable task of playing tournament winner, GM Daniel Fernandez in the last round and finished on 5.5 points in clear fifth place. GM Fernandez wins the New Zealand Open with 8 points, 1.5 points clear of GM Vasily Papin in 2nd place.

Here is a list of players where longevity hasn't been a problem. The first year is the first time the player was NZ Champion, the second year is the last time.

Name First Last Years
Richard J Barnes 1890 1905 15
William E Mason 1900 1919 19
Arthur W O Davies 1908 1926 18
John Dunlop 1920 1939 19
Ortvin Sarapu 1951 1989 38
Paul Garbett 1973 2020 47
Murray Chandler 1975 2006 31
Russell Dive 1986 2020 34
Anthony Ker 1988 2019 31
Robert Smith 1995 2015 20
Alexei Kulashko 1996 2016 20

I think Ortvin last one was 1990?

Did Michael Freeman ever win the NZ Championship?
He won the correspondence chess champs twice, but OTB. He did represent NZ at OTB for one Olympiad and three Asian Teams.

I know he is a top corres GM.
He is a Corr Senior International Master (norm 2525), the first Kiwi to earn that. Mark Noble is the only Corr GM (norm 2600).

I think Ortvin last one was 1990?The Great Ort won the 1989/90 (the 97th edition) jointly with Ben Martin. I've only used the first year in the table above. If the championship was the 1990 one then the "1989" may as well be deleted.

Anthony Ker was impressive, not just in winning the NZ Rapid title for the 6th time, but also winning the tournament overall with 7.5 points from 9 rounds. This included turning the tables on GM Daniel Fernandez with a win in round 6 and draws with GM Vasily Papin and IM Brandon Clarke in rounds 4 and 5. In second place were Brandon and Vasily. Russell Dive was the next best Kiwi on 6 points with a big flock, 8 in all, on 5.5 points.

A very impressive result indeed. Ker also won the NZ Lightning title (http://www.newzealandchess.co.nz/tournaments/bp/2020/wwwcongress2020lightning/crosstablescore.html) as the highest placed Kiwi with 6.5/9, a point clear of the next Kiwi, and winning his game against GM Fernandez here too. The tournament winners were IM Brandon Clarke (ENG) and the veteran (71yo) IM Herman Claudius van Riemsdijk (BRA) on 7; and Ker tied with GMs Fernandez, Papin, and Johansen.

No..only ever played in it once. Any not yet a CC GM - and probably never will be now as engines have killed the CC experience. More into 960 chess now.

Thanks for that link, Michael. A great summary of your career. And I recall you looking like both of those first 2 photos!
