Double round day is Sunday 5th January 2020 where round 2 starts 9am and round 3 starts 2pm.

Pairings for all rounds are published within Vega generated webpages. Access from Vega menu "Tables > Schedule".

Direct links to all rounds pairings in each round robin's schedule are here:
Masters (http://www.newzealandchess.nz/2020/Vega/wwwGeorgeTrundleMasters/schedule.html), Qualifiers (http://www.newzealandchess.nz/2020/Vega/wwwGeorgeTrundleQualifiers/schedule.html), Reserves (http://www.newzealandchess.nz/2020/Vega/wwwGeorgeTrundleReserves/schedule.html), Talents (http://www.newzealandchess.nz/2020/Vega/wwwGeorgeTrundleTalents/schedule.html).

The webpage accessed under Vega "Pairings" menu just displays pairings for upcoming round and previous rounds that have all game results. A bit confusing when looking up pairings for all rounds in single or double round robins, but is what works for mainly swiss system pairings software that prevents improper actions.

The veteran GM Darryl Johansen is showing his class by winning his first three games and drawing the fourth to move into an early lead.

Johansen, Darryl K - Gong, Daniel Hanwen, R2

1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.c4 Bg7 4.Nc3 d6 5.e4 O-O 6.Be2 e5 7.O-O Nh5 8.Bg5 f6 9.Be3 Nf4 10.Re1 Nxe2+ 11.Qxe2 Bg4 12.h3 Bxf3 13.Qxf3 Nc6 14.d5 Ne7 15.Qe2 f5 16.f3 f4 17.Bf2 {Johansen won an Olympiad game with a very similar structure: KID where the light-squared Bs had been exchanged. Black really needs this piece for his K-side play, while White's Q-side attack is very strong.} 17...g5 18.c5 Ng6 19.Rac1 Rf7 20.Rc2 Bf8 21.cxd6 Bxd6 22.Nb5 h5 23.Nxd6 {There is no hurry for this exchange, because that B is not going anywhere. But even this bad B protects some good Ps.} 23...cxd6 24.Rec1 Kg7 25.Rc3 a6 26.Qc2 Qa5 27.b4 Qb5
(27...Qxb4?? 28.Rb1 Qa5 29.Bb6)
28.a4 Qe8 29.Bb6 Rd7 {Black is only defending.} 30.Qd1 Ne7 31.Bf2 Rc8 32.Rxc8 Nxc8 33.h4 {Now Black's advanced Ps are not attackers, but targets} 33...Ne7?!

(41...Nxd7 42.Bd8 Qe8 43.Qc7 hxg2 44.b6 Kf7 45.Bf6 Kg6 46.Qxd6)

Steadman, Michael V R - Johansen, Darryl K, R3

White's g-pawn looks loose.} 18.c3 Ba7 19.exd5 Bxd5 20.Bxd5 exd5 21.Be3 Bxe3 22.Qxe3 Nc6 23.Qc5 Rad8
(23...Qf4! 24.Qxd5

24...Ne5 25.Qg2 Nf3+ 26.Kh1 Rfe8 {White can't do anything useful about ...Re6-g6} )
24.h3 h5 25.Nb6! Rfe8 26.Nxd5 Qb7 {Now Black has lost P under much less favorable conditions} 27.c4
(27.gxh5 {+=})
27...hxg4 28.hxg4 Rc8 29.Re3 Ne5 30.Qd4 Rxc4 31.Qxc4 Nxc4 32.Rxe8+ Kh7 33.Rd1 Qc6 34.Ree1 f6 35.f4

The 2 New Zealanders that are the only players that can get an IM norm seem to be out of the running with only 2 points so far. Has anyone calculated the score needed at the start of the tournament for an IM norm?

Vega calculates that, but no doubt Keong has been keeping track of it as well so Mike could work out who to invite.

Vega calculates that, but no doubt Keong has been keeping track of it as well so Mike could work out who to invite.

Score required by both FMs for IM norm is
6.5/10 for 10 game IM norm.

Score required for 9 game IM norm from first 9 games played:
FM Gong 6/9 for 9 game IM norm.
FM Steadman 5.5/9 for 9 game IM norm.

With 6 games out of 10 played and after shedding so many points, both FMs cannot earn an IM norm from this event anymore.
