Good to see that this tournament actually started, good luck to all participants!

I was just looking through the first round games. Mr. Jason Chan (rated 1900+) began his game with 1. a3 :) Can any of the NSW people tell us why and whether he does that on a regular basis?

Yes he does. All the bloody time. In fact, he even tried it against Solo at this year's Doeberl. He lost that one.

It's Jason's attempt to get opponents out of book. This partly explains his fascination for FR.

Btw, Jason is our very own fellow BBer, 1minGM. He's also a member of the Hyde Park chess club (where he devised our first ever rating system) and is prez of Uni of Sydney CC (where he produces a fantastic chess newsletter and where he is a PhD candidate).

Mr Chan is a very thoughful player as you can see from his postings re prize money distribution, tournament formats, etc. Once - he left us patzers at the park a bit dumb struck when he asked: whats the difference between Pirc/Modern and KID?

Srbo Zaric has also been known to play it. He played it against Rogers in the Checkmate weekender in 2000 and I think only lost in a time scramble at the end, although I don't think I have ever seen the complete game.

Sounds like a cool bloke. He's playing against one of the visiting masters today. I reckon either Chan or Pyke will produce an upset today.

Of the other top-10 boards, I like Ly's chances. The kid he's playing is a bit robot-like and may not cope with young Ly very well.

Anyway, maybe AR can tell us more stories about NSW players in the open. Let's start with Escribano - what's his official position on the whole Internet qualifier debacle?

Mate, that's a well and truly dead horse that.

Tomek is a very experienced player (and tough), so it will be interesting.

Well, if you say so, then it probably is. For:
1) those in the know
2) those in NSW

What about the rest of us? We long to know!

Not sure that those in NSW have any special knowledge. Next time you see Gary Bekker you could try asking him. I believe he was on the investigation panel.

Tomek robotic? I always thought he was a creative player, he says Shirov is his idol. I think he coped quite easily with young Ly.
BTW why does it take so long to post up the results, I mean almost all of the games finish by 6pm. :hmm:

A few little upsets today. One big upset was in the making on board one but Dusan Stojic went sent his knight 12.Ng5? to the wrong spot, instead of 12.Bc8 and 13 o-o with advantage. After this Latvian champion 2004 convert whites mistake very nicely. An instructive game.

Correct predictions so far 0 out of 3 :)

For the third round I reckon there won't be any draws on first 9 boards with all the results going according to ratings.

I like Chan's gane from round2. Would Qh3 just before Qxh6 achieve anything? Anyway, nice attacking game. Bjelobrk game was amuzing as well. Seems like the other guy could have taken bishop on e7, thus ensuring a draw but decided not to :)

Yes, yes . . . This Arlandi bloke seems fond of the 9. Nd2 var. Compare that game with this below, which I chanced upon last night in the database. As it turns out, this old Kasparov victory is extensively analysed by Keene & Jacobs in their "The Complete KID".

So what happened to Bernard Laugery that led to his forfeiting.

Also what caused Ken Stark to withdraw after Round 1.

He just didnt show for today. Charles attempted to contact him and failed. He will be withdrawn if there is no further contact.
