Who is he or who was he?

In a book bought a few days ago, there was a newspaper article - app. in A4-size - from around 1975 I presume. The headline was WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BOBBY?

Which newspaper did Peter Smark write for? It seems like that he wrote from Pasadena.

In 1982 he was writing for the Age not sure about earlier.

I haven't heard that name in a while! He was a SMH/Age reporter/raconteur, who I remember reading when I used to read the hardcopy version of the SMH many years ago.

Judging from the second paragraph the article has to come from c.1978 as it seems to have been written while the Karpov-Korchnoi wch match was in progress. I did some searches on Trove but couldn't locate it.

The reference to a US Zonal in "June this year" places the article certainly in the latter half of 1978. The US Zonal, which doubled as the US Champs, was held in Pasadena, June 4-26 1978.

I would say pre 18 October, 1972 since the wording of para 2 indicates that the wch match had almost certainly not concluded.

I assume you mean 1978. I was thinking the start date of the match might narrow the date further but it doesn't really as the match went for three months in those days! (July 18-October 18)

Yes 1978 as per post #5.

There is a note in Wikipedia that Peter Smark won the Graeme Perkin Australian Journalist of the Year Award for 1983 as an "Age" journalist. I recall his name but didn't see much of his writing. Alan Ramsey ("A Matter of Opinion", Allen & Unwin 2009) mentions him as an SMH writer also.
