2016 South Island Lightning Championships Celebrating 150 years of the Canterbury Chess Club

This is one of a number of events celebrating 150 years of the Canterbury Chess Club and is proudly sponsored by Southern Trust (http://www.southertrust.org.nz), Benson Insurance Brokers Ltd (http://www.bensoninsurance.co.nz) and Dancing Water Wines (http://www.dancingwater.co.nz), and will be held on 23/07/2016 (Saturday) after the completion of the main tournament.

Venue
The venue is the spectacular Newbery Lodge (http://www.newberylodge.co.nz), 15 Newbery Street, Opawa, Christchurch. Plenty of off-street parking is available.

Tournament Information
The tournament is a 7 round Swiss, paired with the assistance of Vega. Time control is 3 minutes per player, per game, with a 2 second increment from move 1.

Tournament Timetable
Entries close at 2:30pm on the day (23 July) and the players' meeting will be as soon as possible after that. Round 1 will be at 9:45am, round 2 at 11am, round 3 at 1pm, round 4 at 2:15pm, round 5 at 3:30pm and round 6 at 4:45pm. There is a break for lunch between rounds 2 and 3. Prizegiving will be held at the celebratory dinner later in the evening of the 23rd.

Prizes
There is a guaranteed minimum prize fund of $200 made up of cash, wine and book prizes. This will be increased if entries allow.

The highest-placed South Island NZ player (NZ resident or citizen registered with a South Island club) will be the South Island Lightning Champion. Prizes will be shared between players on the same number of points - tie-breaks will not be used.

South Island Lightning Championship Competition Rules


Defaults: The default time is 30 minutes after the start of the round, per NZCF Regulations.
Appeals: A player may appeal against a decision of the Arbiter. An Appeals Committee will be elected at the Players Meeting. Appeals must be lodged in writing within 10 minutes of the end of the game. A fee of $100 will apply, to be refunded if the appeal is successful or otherwise at the discretion of the Appeals Committee.
Mobile Phones: During a game, players are forbidden to have a mobile phone, electronic means of communication or any device capable of suggesting chess moves on their person in the playing venue - please note that this includes smart watches, but does not include digital watches with LCDs. Such devices may be stored in a player's bag, which is to be left under their table during the game unless permission is given by the Arbiter. Such devices are to be switched off and are not to make any noise. Breaches of this rule will result in loss of game unless the Arbiter decides otherwise.

The entry fee is $35 for this tournament or $180 to enter the South Island Championship, Rapid Championship and Lightning Championship. Please include your name, date of birth, NZCF ID, FIDE ID and a list of tournaments you would like to enter in the email, and we will send a reply with our bank account number.

Agree, good efforts all round, but a picket fence is tough in lightning, so well done that man!
