2016 South Island Championships Celebrating 150 years of the Canterbury Chess Club
Incorporating the 2016 All Canterbury Championships

This is one of a number of events celebrating 150 years of the Canterbury Chess Club and is a class 1 event in the Poison Pawn Grand Prix, proudly sponsored by Southern Trust (http://www.southertrust.org.nz), Benson Insurance Brokers Ltd (http://www.bensoninsurance.co.nz) and Dancing Water Wines (http://www.dancingwater.co.nz), held from 19/07/2016 - 23/07/2016 (Tues - Sat).

Venue
The venue is the spectacular Newbery Lodge (http://www.newberylodge.co.nz), 15 Newbery Street, Opawa, Christchurch. Plenty of off-street parking is available.

Tournament Information
The tournament is a FIDE and NZCF-rated event and is an 9 round Swiss, paired with the assistance of Vega. Time control is 90 minutes per player, per game, with a 30 second increment from move 1.

Tournament Organiser/Director of Play
For enquiries, please contact IA Craig Hall:
E-mail: canterbury@chess.org.nz
Mobile: (021) 1289-543

Tournament Timetable
Players' meeting will be at 9:00am on the 19th. Rounds will be at 9:30am and 3pm each day, except that as round 9 is the final round, there will be no afternoon round on the 23rd. Prizegiving will be held at the celebratory dinner on the evening of the 10th.

Prizes
There is a guaranteed minimum prize fund of $2000 made up of cash, wine and book prizes. This will be increased if entries allow. As part of that, a meritorious performance prize will be awarded each day at the discretion of the Director of Play.

The highest-placed South Island NZ player (NZ resident or citizen registered with a South Island club) will be the South Island Champion and the highest-placed Canterbury resident will be the All Canterbury Champion. Prizes will be shared between players on the same number of points - tie-breaks will not be used. Players may not win more than one open or grade prize, but may win the All Canterbury Championship prize and a meritorious performance prize in addition to other prizes. NZ Master points are on offer - 10 points for 1st, 6 for 2nd, 3 for 3rd and 1 for 4th.

South Island Championship Competition Rules

Ratings: The tournament will be FIDE-rated and NZCF-rated. Pairings will be done and rating-based prizes awarded on the basis of NZCF ratings. Players without NZCF ratings may be assigned a rating by the Arbiter for the tournament. NZ players will be issued FIDE IDs where required. Foreign players must have a FIDE ID to enter - foreign players without FIDE IDs should contact their national federation to arrange this before the tournament.
Defaults: The default time is 30 minutes after the start of the round, per NZCF Regulations.
Appeals: A player may appeal against a decision of the Arbiter. An Appeals Committee will be elected at the Players Meeting. Appeals must be lodged in writing within 30 minutes of the end of the game. A fee of $100 will apply, to be refunded if the appeal is successful or otherwise at the discretion of the Appeals Committee.
Mobile Phones: During a game, players are forbidden to have a mobile phone, electronic means of communication or any device capable of suggesting chess moves on their person in the playing venue - please note that this includes smart watches, but does not include digital watches with LCDs. Such devices may be stored in a player's bag, which is to be left under their table during the game unless permission is given by the Arbiter. Such devices are to be switched off and are not to make any noise. Breaches of this rule will result in loss of game unless the Arbiter decides otherwise.
Half-point Byes: Players may elect to take a half-point bye in any one of the first six rounds. Please inform the Arbiter prior to the completion of the previous round. Players may not take more than one half-point bye in the tournament.

To Enter
The entry fee is $110 ($130 for entries received after June 30) for this tournament or $180 to enter the South Island Championship, Rapid Championship and Lightning Championship. Please email (canterbury@chess.org.nz) the tournament organiser, Craig Hall. Please include your name, date of birth, NZCF ID, FIDE ID and a list of tournaments you would like to enter in the email, and we will send a reply with our bank account number.

Good to see an few old cronies of mine playing from my Dunedin and Christchurch days - e.g. David Weegenaar (Got Solo in round 2), Geoff Davies, Ross Jackson, Stephen Lukey , Quentin Johnson, Matthew McNabb, Hamish Gold ... - gosh I know most of the field personally!

Some games are available to view or download here:

http://www.chesschecker.com/Tournament/2016SouthIslandChampionships

Individual games can be viewed by clicking on the green triangles next to pairings/results, and the PGN can be downloaded by clicking Tournament Details and the file becomes available in the dropdown area.

Chesschecker is the brainchild of Canterbury Chess Club member, Andrew Masters, and aims to automate game entry by using special scoresheets to allow the games to be scanned and converted to PGN by the software. Still in testing stage currently, but it's impressive stuff so far.

What was the Story in the Lukey vs Lane game was peices hanging queens hanging was like watch 2 1300 rated players playing or was there lots of errors on the score sheet?

Surely 'errors' on the scoresheet. Perhaps time-trouble was involved and the new technology couldn't read their hand-writing.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention! Looking at it, I think it was issues reading the scoresheet - some of the handwriting was a little untidy and the software misread the moves. It looks correct now, but if any other games look wrong, let us know and the ChessChecker team will look the games over.

Also, congratulations to Stephen Lukey - South Island Champion!

Definitely! That game with Lane looks far more plausible now, except that last move looks funny. Surely h4 would induce resignation, not throwing away a P with g5. If Black could exchange his N+P for White's K-side Ps, then White would not be able to win even a N+P up.
