AlphaGo +1 - wins first game.

Does Go actually have a "world champion" as such?

For the chess version see the thread here: http://www.chesschat.org/showthread.php?15160-The-A-R-B-Chess-System

Basically it involves trying to beat computers using an otherwise rubbish opening that locks down large sections of the board and then conducts a creeping kingside attack, or something like that.

AlphaGo now 3-zip in a best of 5 match.

Lee Sedol managed to win with a nice game in the fourth of the match but AlphaGo won the fifth and finished up 4-1. So not quite a wash for Lee Sedol but certainly a very strong performance.

More convincing than the first computer beating of Kasparov. Didn't think it would happen for a few years yet.

Lee Sedol is regarded as the Worlds No.1 Player :)

What about the 18yo Chinese prodigy Ke Jie (http://senseis.xmp.net/?KeJie), the currently highest rated player, with the highest historical rating of all time (http://www.goratings.org/history/); the only player to have surpassed 3600? He beat Lee Sedol in the 2nd Mlily Cup (https://gogameguru.com/2nd-mlily-cup-final/) this year by winning the deciding 5th game by the closest possible margin (˝ point). But it looks like computer would be the favourite against Ke as well.

The following video shows the historical ratings of the top 10 go players since 1974, so not including the great Go Seigen who totally dominated the mid 20th century, and Honinbo Shuei who was at least a stone stronger than any rival around the turn of the 20th century.

Ke Jie has been trash talking AlphaGo which makes me think he doesn't really understand how computers work. :)

Or else it is just bravado. Lee Sedol had also bragged that he would thrash AlphaGo 5-0 based on its less convincing previous win against a lesser professional.

What about the 18yo Chinese prodigy Ke Jie

The Google Deepmind AlphaGo team chose Lee Sedol because of his Consistent play over a longer period of time! Ke Jie only got so good recently.

I wonder how long before it will be necessary for top players to take a handicap against the computer. In chess, top players like Nakamura can't beat the best computers even with pawn and move. Top go players Cho Chikun and Hideo Otaki believed that they would need 3 stones to play God (i.e. a perfect Go player), and probably 4 if life was at stake, and even then that might not be enough.

An improved version of AlphaGo, playing as Master(P), recently beat 60 top pros in a row in rapid go (http://www.nature.com/news/google-reveals-secret-test-of-ai-bot-to-beat-top-go-players-1.21253). The top humans may well need a handicap to have a chance now.

AlphaGo is old news now

https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg23631484-000-alphagos-ai-upgrade-gets-round-the-need-for-human-input/?cmpid=ILC|NSNS|2017_webpush&utm_medium=ILC&utm_source=NSNS&utm_campaign=webpush-AlphaGo

Make way for AlphaGo Zero, which in three days taught itself to play Go so well that it beat the version that beat Sedol 100-0.

RIP Sugiuchi Masao (1920–21 Nov 2017), aged 97, the oldest active Go professional who played only just last year against a player 80 years younger (http://www.nihonkiin.or.jp/match_news/match_info/801595.html). In the 1960s, he was probably one of the top half-dozen in the world. He was nicknamed Go no Kami-sama (‘God of Go’) apparently because of his very serious nature.

He didn't make it to a century, unfortunately, unlike the greatest Go player of the 20th century, Go Seigen (Chinese: Wú Qīng yuán, 12 June 1914 – 30 November 2014).
