Just a quick note that the St George Summer Open starts on Tuesday 7 December 2004 at the St George Leagues Club Chess Club.

It is a seven round Open Swiss on Tuesday nights 7,14,21 Dec / 11,18,25 Jan / 1 Feb (I will confirm these dates).

Time control: 40/90 - 30min to finish.

I will post more details when I receive the flyer from Charles Z.

Should be a pleasant competition if last year's is anything to go by.

I have agreed to be the organiser (albeit a somewhat reluctant one) for this event, although Charles Zworestine will be there for round 1 (and do the relatively hard work of organising the first round draw). Charles will probably be present for a couple of other rounds as well. So, to make my job easier, if you are playing and have any disputes, make sure they happen when Charles is present ;)

The Wise Man will run next year's (2005/06) St George Summer Open ;)

Well you see....... the last train that i can catch from campbelltown is at 10.25 therefore (according to the transport infoline i would have to leave the STG leagues at 9.05. Thus if the game was to go the full 4 hours I would have to start at 5

North Sydney beat St George by 10 points in the second rubber after losing the first rubber by 6 to retain the trophy by 4 points.

This was one of the closest rubbers where over 50 pairings had players within 100 rating points of each other... (except for St George's bottom 2-3 boards).

Well done to North Sydney.... a well played and thoroughly deserving victory...

St George Summer Open starts tonight....

I give a quick report tomorrow... My prediction is that there will be 44 players. Charles Z predicts just over the 30 mark...

Anyone else willing to guess the turnout....

The_Wise_Man
08-12-2004, 10:34 AM
34 starters... Experience prevails…. Though 6-7 members showed up and decided for whatever reason not to play…

Top seeds: Rose (2061), Radev (1923), Mojanovski (1830), Bogdanovski (1794), Fell (1787)

Results all went to plan with the exception of fourth seed Petre Bogdanovski (1794) being upset by a sober Omar Taric (1461).

Players may still enter the tournament and will receive a half-point bye in round 1.

3 or 4 of them must be tossers.

but in the meantime..... I was really happy for one of the newer members of the club, who despite not having many wins to his credit always turns up enthusiastically to play opponents 600-1000 rating points higher than him.

Well in round 2 this member caused the upset of the tournament that I had to check it not once but twice before I could believe it.....

Patrick Brown (589) beat Thierry Ollivain (1423)....

Well done Pat persistence pays off....

Well if 6 or 7 turn up it is unlikely that they ALL had:
1. A good reason to turn up and
2. A good reason not to play.

So I take a stab at the idea that about half of them either had:
1. No good reand to turn up or
2. No good reason not to play

These would be the 3 or 4 tossers. ;)

One of those who showed up last week... showed up again this week....
This time prepared to pay his $50 and enter the draw....

He got a half point bye in round one despite being rated over 1800 and would have been playing a player in the lower half of the draw the week before...

I found it unusual? Can you explain this one? (Matt)

that person may not have been certain in the first week whether they would be able to play the whole competition and only in the second week knew for certain that they could play the whole competition.

well as the wise man said the player in question would have been one of the top seeds and so would have been playing someone rated alot lower than the said player. So trying to get an easier draw is unlikely?

Trent Parker
15-12-2004, 11:44 PM
Of course it would be an easier draw in future rounds.

Eg. Instead of being on 2 he might only be playing in the 1.5 bracket. Whilst the others play each other up the top.

I'm pretty sure thats why JB (in sydney..... no not u james :D) turns up late at tournaments all the time.

Trent is onto this one, and I will take it further.

Your late entry wanted to play a "Swiss Gambit". However, to do so would have involved having a draw against a much lower rated player, thus shedding rating points. By SCAMMING a half point bye, he gets his "Swiss Gambit" without the pain of lost rating points.

can i have a list of players in rating order please, including those who took byes in round one.

List of players as requested.

First round 0.5 point byes to Escribano, Rewais and Vasilevski.

Bozidar Vasilevski is not on the ACF master list and so does not have a ACF rating (he appears to have come to Australia recently from somewhere in the former Yugoslavia - his English is not very good and he needed another player to act as interpreter). I suspect he probably has a rating of around 1800 in his country of origin. Bill, do you have lists somewhere of overseas players ratings and if so can you tell me what Bozidar Vasilevski's rating is?

 There is no issue here! This is yet another Matt Sweeney beat up!

As can be seen in post number 6 in this thread, players are allowed up to one half point bye during rounds 1 to 6. As such, a 0.5 point bye for round one for late entries is quite reasonable and proper (in fact many tournaments follow this practise!). Note that these players will be unable to take any more 0.5 point byes for the rest of the competition (see post #6 in this thread), so they have used up their ration of 0.5 point byes.

Matthew, go back to baiting Bill and leave the Summer Open alone! ;) :P

The reason i wanted the list is that I disagree with the assertions made by Matt et al but I would like to do some testing first. My gut reaction is that a high rated player is more advantaged by playing in the first round and scoring 1 point, rather than sitting out the first round and taking 0.5 bye. But i want to do some testing with the same field that SGSO is using as I am not quite sure of my facts and figures just yet :uhoh:

Trent Parker

Put it this Way ggray

a person on a half will not meet a high rated person on 1 until a much later round assuming that both players win each of their games.

Trust me on this one!

Dude, I am not having a go at StG. I was only responding the TWM's direct question to me, with some cynical explanation. I have no agenda here. StG can and should, I feel, continue with the policy that they have. I am only pointing out that a player could use this policy to SCAM a painless Swiss Gambit.

Matt

There was no offence taken.... I personally do not think you are having a go at St George....

I have a few objectives in posting St George news...

(a) Someone may actually find it interesting (though no-one has specifically told me so, feel free to PM me on this or any hints/tips) and as one of the bigger clubs in Sydney others may want to know what is going on....

(b) From what I understand, St George is restricted in its webspace on the St George Leagues Club and I don't think that they can link to an external site

(c) To promote the club in Cyberspace. As we have members overseas and inter-state to try and let them know what is happening...

(d) If you haven't guessed already.... As someone who visits the BBoard 4 to 5 times a day... it sometimes gets a little bit slow... so I try to put something new up.... try and get some discussion.

(e) No one has yet said :hand: "Stop all this self-promotion". :hand:

So if you want to discuss things, go right ahead....

If I am offended with anything on the BB :( :( :( I will let you know via PM ;) ;) first and I will then further clarify the position on the BB later.

Anyone wanting more info can send me a PM.
