Luke Li, Russell Dive and Hilton Bennett are flying the New Zealand flag at the Doerbel Cup, and doing pretty well after six rounds too. Li is unbeaten and is just half a point behind the leaders on 4.5. Dive is a further half a point back on 4. Bennett has 2 points. Particularly impressive performance by Li so far. After expected wins in the first two rounds, Li drew with GM Levente Vadja of Romania (2597) and IM Moulthun Ly of Australia (2440) in rounds 3 and 4. In round 5, Li beat FM Kanan Izzat of Azerbaijan (2383) and in round 6, drew with GM Loek van Nely of Netherlands (2685)!

Talked to IM Russell Dive for the first time in many years today at SIO. Used to see him often in Wellington. Hilton also playing again at SIO - and Luke, though he hardly counts as a "foreigner" here as he now lives in Melbourne.

Luke Li has also drawn with Van Wely in the SIO and suppose he could be on track for another IM norm. Anyone know how many he has got and how many are needed to get the IM title.

He has at least two since he got one in the 2013 Doeberl as well as the 2014 event. He needs three and to at some stage have a live rating of 2400+.

Does anyone know if Luke Li has a chance of an IM norm?

No chance after that painful loss to Levente. Nice mate in 3 problem though - I'll use it in my next column :)
