Looks enticing but that's going to be FIFA World Cup quarter / finals time!

The 50+ criterion is sensible. Last year's SA seniors turned away people in their 50s and ran with a tiny field. Any suggestions on accommodation near transport?

Peter Abbott

There are a range of accommodation options close to Norths Leagues Club.
Rydges Hotel, McLaren Street, North Sydney have supported our tournaments over the years, are 1.7KM away and on the bus route. The closest accommodation to the venue is Cammeray Gardens although they tend to quote on a per-week basis. North Shore Hotel and Falcon Lodge are both around 1Km away and the McLaren Hotel, close to Rydges is a further option.
Alternatively there is plenty of accommodation in the City and regular buses from Wynyard Station.
If we can help with anything more specific, let our organising team know - northsydneychess@gmail.com

How old are you - 25?:D If you think 50 is senior try playing at 75+ ;)

You have a few years experience over me Denis. I've been playing the annual master's hockey champs for a few years and they even have an over 75 category.

As a general comment I do think this 50-as-senior thing is silly; in other walks of life one always hears that 50 is the new 40. I'm only seven and a half years off 50 and find the idea that I'll be a "senior" then ridiculous. But the OCC doesn't make these rules so shouldn't be blamed for offering this event.

It's only Caisa's way to reward her mature warriors. If it was up to Mr Abbott we would have to reach 70 before we were allowed to play in seniors' tournaments! :P :)

Entered online just now. Thank you for the accommodation info Peter Abbott; very helpful! As regards the notion of "50 as senior", the change has come almost too late for me. I am rapidly closing in on the old (ie former) older criterion and now I may have to contend with a lot of youngsters playing in senior tournaments.

Good to hear - I used to play hockey as a young person. Now I'm in veterans' cycling which begins at 35 for men (pretty odd as there are several riders competing in the UCI Pro Tour teams at 35+). I am not the oldest in the ACT Vets Cycling Club either - we even have one member who is well over 80 and he is also a tri-athlete!.

You become a Senior at the start of the year you reach 50 (and a Veteran in the year you reach 65). Tony is certainly eligible to play.

oh no!!! No, No, NO!!! :) :P in this case (and I am slightly paraphrasing the Roman proverb here) Tony must not only be eligible but must also be seen to be eligible!!! He doesn't look like he has reached 50!!! :)

A document containing the following text will be on display at the tournament:

Changes to the Laws of Chess:

Please note that a new version of the Laws of Chess applies for tournaments commencing on or after 1st July 2014. The full version of the new Laws is at http://www.fide.com/component/handbook/?id=171&view=article Players should take some time to familiarise themselves with the new Laws.
The most important changes are:

1. Players explicitly have the right to ask the Arbiter for an explanation of any points in the Laws of Chess. Please exercise this right.

2. Unless the rules of the competition state otherwise, a player who is found to have brought a mobile phone into the playing venue shall lose the game. For this event, if you bring your phone, you must leave it in the box provided by the Chief Arbiter. If you fail to do so, you risk losing the game even if your phone makes no sound.

3. The Arbiter will declare the game drawn if a position is repeated five times in a row or if 75 moves are played without a pawn move or a capture. Players can still claim a draw for threefold repetition or the 50-move rule, the new rule simply allows the Arbiter to step in when the players fail to claim the draw.
The process for claiming a draw is unchanged. If the conditions for a draw have already been met, stop the clocks and call the Arbiter. If your move will result in the conditions for a draw being met, do not make the move. Instead, write it on your scoresheet, stop the clocks and call the Arbiter.

4. If you push your pawn to the last rank and fail to exchange it for a piece before pressing your clock, the pawn is replaced with a queen and your opponent gets 2 minutes for the illegal move.

5. A player shall lose if they complete (including pressing the clock) two illegal moves in a game.

6. The touch-move rule states ‘touches with the intention of moving or capturing’, instead of ‘deliberately touches’, so if someone clearly simply forgets to say j’adoube, they do not have to move the piece they adjust. You should still state your intention to adjust pieces, as you do not get the benefit of the doubt if you pick up a piece then claim you were just adjusting.

Please also note the tournament rules here - https://sites.google.com/site/oceaniaseniors2014/information - including the time control (90 mins + 30 secs/move + 30 minutes after your 40th move) and forfeiture time (30 minutes after the start of the round).

The entry list is here - https://sites.google.com/site/oceaniaseniors2014/registration/entries and contains an IM, 2FMs, 2CMs and a WFM.

The Chief Arbiter will be IA Charles Zworestine.

My money is still on Gary Lane. However, it is good that he is not picket-fencing. Keeps the tournament more interesting.

I realise that it makes your Adamski-imitation technique much more authentic if you get your facts wrong, but to this point Lovejoy has taken only one half-point bye.

Hopefully the organisers would not allow any player to take multiple half-point byes as multiple half-point byes are against the Swiss rules under C.04.1(d).

I visited the tournament today (at least partly to give Charles a lunch break!) and when I left Gary Lane had won on Board 1, Board 2 was still going, Cabilin had won on Board 3 and Murray had won on Board 4.

What is the time control?

Post 1 says it is "90 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for remaining moves, with an increment of 30 seconds per move from move 1."

However the tournament brochure says it is "All moves in 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move from move 1."

David Webster

Post 1 is incorrect - I had not noticed that until now, but as far as I know is the only place where the time control was advertised as such. The games were played at 90+30.

Oh MG my absolute nightmare of finishing last :hmm: in a tournament is taking shape!!!:P:P

he he I didn't ... A win in the last round saved me from big problems! Big problems??? In case i 'd finished last I was going to stop all other activities and go learn chess before I entered another tournament!:doh: (*)

Now, I have all the time in the world to prepare for my next European summer vacation!

BTW a wonderful tournament - well that's a North's tournament you expect the best! Thanks Brian, thanks Paul and above all thanks Charles and all participants!

Also, the weather was absolutely brilliant, apart from chess I enjoyed my roaming around NSW I took 100s of photos, I met old and new friends and going back to Melbourne for a bit of a rest now before the new ventures! :)

(*) Regardless my poor results I am happy with my performance. In a couple of games I lost from winning positions. The ones I won, I played better than my oponents! The other three I was completely outplayed!

Round 7
White Norman Greenwood
Black Elliott Renzies
Result 0-1

Last round game. Both players need to win to avoid the wooden spoon! I gambled with the Englund Gambit. I know that if White knows the opening and plays correctly Black is doomed. However, not many players know the winning line and this inferior opening once again saved me from disaster.

Here we go!

Be6 15. Qxb7 O-O 16. f5 Qd6 17. fxe6 Qxd3

I must add that I won the game but Mr Greenwood won the analysis - very convincingly too!

Thanks for the input Michael.

We analysed a couple of lines where White handles the opening in a more theoretically acceptable manner such as

1. d4 e5 2. dxe5 Nc6 3. Nf3 Qe7 4. Bf4 Qb4+ 5. Bd2 Qxb2 6.
Nc3 (6. Bc3 Bb4) 6... Bb4 7. Rb1 (7. Nd5 Bxd2+) 7... Qa3 8. Nb5 Bxd2+ 9. Qxd2
Qxa2 10. Rd1 Kd8

Analysis shows that White gets the better in those lines!

Arh I see, well around move 4..why usually has decent positions in all openings. And yes, 1..e5 is extra risky.

I didn't know the idea of the Englund Gambit was to go poisoned pawn hunting and leave your king on an open file in the centre. :) Doesn't sound like much of a gambit.

You are right. Qe7-b4 may work against Budapesht gambit but here it is dubious is black is too much behind in development. Ne7-g6 is also a bit too slow. Therefore, 3...d6 may be the way to go trying to complete the development fast and gain some active play.
