A general reminder that some players may qualify for the NZ Championship without necessarily meeting the rating criteria, which are 2000+ NZCF standard rating, or 2100+ FIDE rating. The highest placed New Zealand player in each of the following tournaments in the current year shall also qualify automatically:

New Zealand Junior Championship, New Zealand Major Open, North Island Championship and South Island Championship.

Some of these may already qualify on rating, of course - IM Puchen Wang was the highest-placed NZ player at the SI Champs, for example.

With the exception of the 2013 NZ Major Open champion, all automatic qualifiers have already qualified by rating.
They cannot play in the Major Open even if they wanted to since their NZCF ratings are higher than 2100.

Thanks KA. I'm sure I read somewhere that Championship entries closed on Nov 30, so I thought I'd missed the bus.

Thanks jak, but you've gone too far ahead of me. I've since realised that for family reasons it wouldn't work out. (Besides, I'd need to save up first). PS. What do you mean by 'prodigal'?!

LOL it was the mildest form of the expression. (*) Nothing more than "neglectful" or "forgetful" - the one who was away (from the local chess scene) a long time due to having found better and more rewarding conditions elsewhere!

Happy to replace "prodigal" with an adjective of your choice! :)

From the NZCF Tournament Regulations:

2.2.5 Closing Date for Entries
The preliminary closing date for entries shall be 30 November. All entries received by the controlling authority on or after 1 December are late entries and incur a 20% surcharge. Entries shall be accepted until one and a half hours before the scheduled start of the first round.
2.2.6 Circulation of List of Entries
Immediately after the preliminary closing date the controlling authority shall circulate to all entrants, NZCF affiliates and the Council a list of entries received up to that time.

Theoretically, of course... Being kind souls, the dates are put back this year.

No problem Elliot, I was just kidding :) Still, this thread seems to be in danger of going off-topic!

Thanks Craig. I remember the days when late entries into the Championship field weren't accepted (admittedly a few decades ago)

Wondering if Scott Wastney will be defending his title and whether his clubmates, Anthony Ker and Russell Dive will be making the trip north.

Will the NZ Champion be an automatic selection for the Olympiad team to Tromsų next year?

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

The NZ Champion gets a place in the Open team, yes - provided he (or she) is an outright winner and is eligible to play in the team (someone who is a New Zealand citizen but is registered with FIDE for another country is not eligible for the team, for example, though eligible to win the title).

Late entries are still welcome!

Christmas eve is still NOT too late to enter without late entry penalty!!

I've just updated the entrants.
Anyone who has entered but is still not listed better chase Mike Steadman or me up.

29 entries according to newzealandchess.co.nz. My favourite is Puchen Wang ahead of Russell Dive. Others who could have an impact are Anthony Ker, Ben Hague, Bob Smith, Paul Garbett, Leonard McLaren and Mike Steadman. Rankings of these players are as follows: 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 11 and 15. The remainder are ranked from 30 down to 86.

Just updated player lists for all congress tournaments with January2014 FIDE ratings.
Only the Championship is FIDE rated but thought it would be nice to see FIDE ratings for the other tournaments.

Player seeding is based on NZCF ratings first then FIDE ratings. i.e. FIDE ratings are used in the absence of NZCF ratings for seeding purposes.

NZ Rapid entries close 8.30am 2nd January 2014 NZDT.
then
NZ Championships and Major Open entries close 11am 2nd January 2014 NZDT.
finally
NZ Lightning entries close 5pm 3rd January 2014 NZDT.

As had been published on the Vega webpages in
http://www.newzealandchess.co.nz/calendar.html
All tournaments are 9 round swiss. Dubov swiss pairings are used, more specifically Danubian variant.
Click on the "statistics" link on each tournament's Vega webpage.

For those who are wondering, I have an "ironclad" reason to use Dubov instead of the more familiar Dutch swiss pairings. ;)
Somehow I have not been able to get JaVaFo to work consistently due to some firewall problems with Java. Rather than chance it, I'm using something that works reliably. No way am I going to disable security just to let some pairing engine work (who knows what else could also work!).
Would be interesting to see how the Dubov pairings work in real life. High rated players tend to be paired with each other in earlier rounds.

Finally, there are supposed to be live boards broadcasting. Pairings/results are also supposed to be updated round by round.
This all depends on whether we get an internet connection working at the playing venue. Didn't have an opportunity to check hardware compatibility so if it works on the day, it works, otherwise, updates at the end of the day.

Cannot get live games to broadcast.
Somehow cannot get liveboards connected to the internet.

"live" games would be published as PGN in the Vega folders.
Only able to be done once games are over.

May have solved the problems connecting the liveboards laptop to the internet.
Will only know for sure before the start of play tomorrow (10am 3rd January 2014 NZDT).

If you see live games it works! :D
If not, other problems have been encountered. :(

Thanks for the update(s) KA, but please note that Peter Stuart's NM title doesn't show up in the Vega files for the Championship (in the pairings). Yes, I have a vested interest!

Well Gino, poor Bruce has the extremely tedious data entry job. There are 10 championship boards to enter (15 boards total and top 5 are live and auto recorded) and your game was the last to finish with the most moves, we've all called it the day.

I'll try to fix this. We'd like to honour those who have titles.

Think only FIDE titles show, and even then "worthless titles" (that don't count for player norms) tend to get erased...

What do we do when there is no air conditioning?

Open the doors and the players near the doors get to play in drafty conditions.
Close the doors and it gets hot and humid.

Somehow fate always places those who feel cold easily near sources of ventilation and those who are constantly overheated are in the hottest most humid corner!

The playing area should be 22degreesC constantly.
If I'm feeling hot and dehydrated, playing conditions must be hellish for the players.
What to do in such a situation?

I think it would be better to let it be cold & drafty rather than hot & humid.
It is always possible to put on warmer clothing if cold but we cannot realistically ask players who are hot to strip off!!:lol::lol:

As one who prefers too cold to too hot, I like this logic. Even 22 deg is on the warm side for me; I prefer 18-19.

I'm with Kevin, however a reality with playing anywhere on the Aussie Mainland is that it's going to be hot! A few years ago I played in Melbourne in November and, being acclimatised to Tassie temperate climate, found it very hard to cope with 30C or so temps in the non-airconditioned venue. (It was 43C here in Brisbane yesterday, so I'm toughening up now though ... unlike Roger Federer who lost to Leyton Hewitt in the final of the Brisbane Open today)

At the opposite end of the scale in the late 1970's I once organised a South Island Ch'p in Dunedin in August in a large hall (ball rom of Aquinas Hall for those who remember) with almost no heating. The visiting North Islanders whinged like crazy but the locals thought 10C (or so) was fine!

Any results for Rd 2 of the Championship? (I can find the Major results but not the Ch'p)
Apologies for delay.
Last game for Championships ended just before 6pm and left no time for me to get the results up.
I had to present a Vega workshop and then the NZCF AGM was after that.

All should be online now.
PGN for games are online, up to round 2 for Championships and round 1 only for Major Open.

Enjoy!! :)

New Zealand Rapid Champion Puchen Wang defeated Ben Hague in the last round of the Rapid Championship. Can he repeat this in round 3 of the NZ Championship? There's an interesting match between two former champions as Paul Garbett meets Anthony Ker. The other player on 2 points, Barry Martin-Buss faces a stern test against another former champion, Russell Dive.

The Pgn for my game from round 1 is incorrect. Black's 30th move is Qe7 not Qc7. White's 31th move is Qf4 not Qg5. Just insert in chessbase and it will keep everything the same.

PGN corrected. Thanks Gino.

Remember to bring jacket just in case you feel cold from the wind today.
Unfortunately, you're sitting at the same windy table as yesterday and the doors will be opened once the temperature of the hottest part of the playing area gets above 22degreesC. It is rather sunny now and the temperature is already 24degreesC.
We need to let the air circulate plus hot conditions also make the arbiter grumpy and bad tempered!

I'll try to regulate how much wind blows in but it is difficult to get it just right.

Why did the man come along and open the women toilet right behind my board?
Just to irritate you? :lol::lol:

That should be locked since we do not want anyone using those toilets.
Will get them to lock it for tomorrow. Next time it happens, let me know.

Looking forward to Russell Dive vs Puchen Wang in round 4. Dive beat Barry Martin-Buss while Wang and Ben Hague drew, as did Anthony Ker and Paul Garbett. Ker plays Hague in round 4 while Bob Smith enters the fray against Garbett.

KA posted this earlier in January in this thread:

"Cannot get live games to broadcast.
Somehow cannot get liveboards connected to the internet.

"live" games would be published as PGN in the Vega folders.
Only able to be done once games are over."

Certainly explains lack of games for now but hopefully not too much longer.

Games have been broadcast live since 3rd January (as my post #25 says).
Traditional flash display:
http://www.newzealandchess.co.nz/live/tfd_onebd.htm
Multi board flash display:
http://www.newzealandchess.co.nz/live/tfd_fourbds.htm
...and
if you want to view live games on your smartphone or tablet:
http://www.newzealandchess.co.nz/pgn4web/NZCongressLive.html

Since the end of 2013 we have upgraded (downgraded?) for usability with as many gadgets as possible. Vega results and pairings now are in smartphone/tablet friendly format. Live games can be viewed using pgn4web that is also smartphone/tablet friendly and does not need Flash plugins.

All Congress information are currently published in the newzealandchess calendar page
http://www.newzealandchess.co.nz/calendar.html
Clicking on the links there would get you where you want. Just explore.

Games that are past can be viewed in the Vega pages. You can either download the PGN for viewing or you can view online.
Currently games for all played rounds in the Championships are online. Major Open games would be updated after the next round starts.
Just try to click on the links, if they work, they have been updated, if empty, we're still working on it!!

Russell Dive has been in good form lately, retirement must be helping his chess. An important win over Puchen Wang means a clash with fellow Wellingtonian Anthony Ker, who defeated Ben Hague in round 4. Dive has beaten Ker in their last three club encounters and there should be no holds barred in this game either. Paul Garbett and Leonard McLaren are half a point behind Dive and Ker, and are paired against Gino Thornton and Wang respectively. Another interesting game is Mike Steadman vs Bob Smith, both on 2.5 points.

Unbeaten after 4 rounds: Ker, Dive 3.5; Garbett 3; William Li, Thornton, Scott Yang 2.5; Vinod Kumar, Peter Stuart 2.

That OCB win is amazing - and very instructive. The superficially drawish-looking OCB ending is actually so advantageous to white (because of better king and the ability to force the hole on b6) that black should never have exchanged rooks into it.

Thanks Q,

In my opinion Pu Chen went wrong with 18...f5 and 19...Ba4, which perhaps suggests he missed the strength of 19.Bc3

On the day I thought 18...Rb8 was fine - with Black for preference. Hopefully Russell will annotate it later on.

Cheers, Tony

Hi Keong,
First posting. Is there an issue with the live feed today? The games have gotten stuck early on. Can you post results as they come to hand please?

Thanks
You're right, the live feed seems to have stopped early.
Cannot find out the reason until I'm at the venue tomorrow.

I know it stops updating everytime some other program uses the internet connection.
Usual problems with connecting to a non dedicated laptop as a gateway to mobile broadband connection.
Maybe something was running in the background unnoticed.

Russell Dive and Anthony Ker drew in round 5 but remain in the lead on 4 points. Wins by Puchen Wang, Ben Hague, Mike Steadman and Scott Yang have these players just half a point behind the leaders. Paul Garbett also has 3.5 points after a draw with Gino Thornton. Another six players on are 3 points. Still unbeaten after 5 rounds: Ker, Dive 4; Garbett, Yang 3.5; Thornton 3; Peter Stuart 2.5. In round 6, it's Dive vs Hague, Yang vs Ker, Wang vs Garbett and Leonard McLaren vs Steadman.

In the Major Open, the joint leaders on 5 points, Sean Martin-Buss and Nigel Cooper meet in round 6. They are a point clear of four players: Ross Jackson, Paul Macdonald, Alphaeus Ang and Qi-Le Kong-Lim.

I thought Pu Chen's moves were fairly provocative but ok - at the time I was mostly struck by the antipositional 20... b5 locking the bishop out of play on a4 and thought that Black was fine after 20... Bc6 challenging the critical central light squares. If White exchanges bishops on immediately 21 Bxc6 then ... Nexc6 supports d4, while the immediate 21 Bxd4 exd4 attacks the knight on e3 and the d5 square is no longer available to it. In the end consigning his pieces to the rim and rlying on tactical tricks failed in the face of Russell's more easily understood strategy of concentrating his minor pieces in the centre.:) The Black queen suddenly ended up being dominated by them. At first I couldn't understand 25...Kh8, thinking that 25... a5 26 Qd2(e1) Qe2 looked more active, but then noticed that 26 Rfe1! forces the queen to c7 anyway. Engine analysis may show all this to be rubbish.... but a great game anyway :clap:

Interesting, I completely missed 20...Bc6 but was mainly concentrating on the game a few moves before. Maybe Pu Chen thought his stunning ...Qc8!? shot would get him out of trouble but wrongly assessed the ensuing ending which turned out to be horrible for Black?

I still prefer my 18...Rb8 which keeps the position more open and makes it harder for White to install knights on juicy squares.

Due to player withdrawal, there will now be a bye in the Championships.

Please take care when gardening, injuries do not help keep people in the tournament. :(

Back up again now at http://www.newzealandchess.co.nz/live/tfd_fourbds.htm. Thanks Keong, if it's your doing.
I had to keep checking every now and then if it was still updating. The live feed kept stopping and I had to keep restarting it.

Think I've figured out the problem. :hmm:
The mobile broadband USB stick had run out of credit!
Got to get Mike to recharge it tomorrow. Then we will see if it is the source of the problems.

Anthony Ker won against Scott Yang in round 6 to take the outright lead on 5 points. He's half a point ahead of Ben Hague, Mike Steadman and Puchen Wang who all won against Russell Dive, Leonard McLaren and Paul Garbett respectively. It's Ker vs Wang and Hague vs Steadman. Ker, Gino Thornton (4) and Peter Stuart (3) are now the only unbeaten players.

In the Major Open, Sean Martin-Buss beat Nigel Cooper and has a one point lead over Cooper and Alphaeus Ang. Martin-Buss (6) will play the unbeaten Ian McNally (4.5) in round 7 while Ang (5) meets Cooper (5).

Thought I'd detail some typical setups of the conditions for games.
Just to bring the event to those who may like to see how things are being run.

Below is a typical board setup every player would expect. I've used board1 of the championships for the upcoming round 7 game so it has a DGT eboard for live broadcasting.
All clocks are DGT XL and every table is numbered. Scoresheets and result slip (board card) placed.
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a618/keongang/NZCongress2014/IMG_2550_zpsfc28dde0.jpg (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/keongang/media/NZCongress2014/IMG_2550_zpsfc28dde0.jpg.html)

More detailed view of result slip (board card) that is generated by Vega. Supplies all information about the pairing for that particular board. All game specific information needed by players to fill out the scoresheet headers are supplied on the board card. It is nice for an organiser to be able to acknowledge a player's title, rating and federation in every game. Something to treat each player as an individual. Also ensures everyone plays the correct opponent with the correct colour.
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a618/keongang/NZCongress2014/IMG_2551_zpse3de3565.jpg (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/keongang/media/NZCongress2014/IMG_2551_zpse3de3565.jpg.html)

All players should receive the same playing conditions. In Congress, we are fortunate that everyone in the Championships and Major Open gets to play on individual tables with the same type of chairs. Everyone receives the same treatment with the same clocks, result slip (board card), scoresheets, chess sets and boards. The difference being the top 5 boards of the championships that are DGT eboards. We made sure all the boards have the files and ranks clearly printed on the boarder. Makes for less mistakes on the scoresheets and entering games easier!

I seem to be cursed with noise distraction issues at all events I am an arbiter in.
At least the conditions are equal for everyone.
The crowd is relatively quiet, but the screams from the thrill rides can be distracting.

Jono, the moves cut and pasted from the viewer won't work here unless captures are added - I 've replaced them with the pgn download below
Much obliged, Q. I would be fine if my original post were deleted.

That OCB win is amazing - and very instructive. The superficially drawish-looking OCB ending is actually so advantageous to white (because of better king and the ability to force the hole on b6) that black should never have exchanged rooks into it.
Indeed, I hope Ker annotates it, as a lesson in both technique and determination to win. I suspected that Steadman's vigilance was impaired by the usual rule of thumb about OCBs being drawish, especially without rooks, and didn't even conceive that a loss was possible.

With a win over previous leader Anthony Ker, Puchen Wang has taken the lead on 5.5 points after seven rounds. He is joined by Mike Steadman who beat Ben Hague. Ker and Russell Dive, who beat previously unbeaten Gino Thornton, have 5 points. Half a point further back are four players: Hague, Paul Garbett, Bob Smith and William Li. Peter Stuart notched up draw number 7 and is the only unbeaten player in the Championship. Could Steadman vs Wang be a championship decider? Wang has already played Ker, Dive, Hague, Garbett and McLaren so a win for Wang here may make it difficult for the chasing bunch. Steadman has yet to meet Dive and Garbett. The other critical games are Smith vs Dive, Ker vs Li and Garbett vs Hague.

Unbeaten Ian McNally kept his record intact as he defeated leader Sean Martin-Buss and he moves to 5.5 points. Together with Paul Macdonald and Ross Jackson, they are half a point behind Buss and Alphaeus Ang. Ang beat Nigel Cooper to become joint leader on 6 points. The top three games in round 8 are Ang vs Jackson, Martin-Buss vs Layla Timergazi (5) and Macdonald vs McNally.

Round 8 update: Steadman 0-1 Wang, Garbett 1/2 Hague and a big upset Ker 0-1 Li.

Looks like Ker overlooked f3 when he took the pawn on b7, giving himself no possibility of stopping the f pawn from queening.

Not at all surprised to see Pu Chen Wang at the top.

Must give congratulations to an elder statesman of NZ chess, Peter Stuart, on not letting anyone beat him!

Yes, but it hasn't all been one-way traffic!

Must give congratulations to an elder statesman of NZ chess, Peter Stuart, on not letting anyone beat him!

One more round to go and he can equal FM Tony Love's record of drawing all his games - just as long as he doesn't accidentally win a game ;)

Here was I thinking that there were 11 rounds and still three to go. Can anyone enlighten us as to why 9 rounds have been used? I checked all the Championships from 2000 onwards and other than when the Championship has been part of the Queenstown Classic, 11 rounds have always been played and often with fewer players than this year's tournament.

Interesting question. So that it aligns with the Island event(s) now in that a nine-rounder can be played in one working week plus the two weekends on either side? (I doubt if it's norms)

A shorter 9 round Championship & Major Open that does not start before 1st January was what came out of NZCF AGM 2013.
Also that events should make use of public holidays.

NZCF AGM 2014 was absolutely silent about reverting to the 11 round format.
Come to think of it, the apathy towards the AGM was appalling!!
Still recovering before writing the minutes.....

We can easily find the NZ Champion in 9 rounds. We could even double the number of players from a Queenstown and still be able to find the champ.

Things could be further improved by shortening the entire Congress to just 9 days long (Mon-Fri with both weekends on either end).
One round per day in the afternoon for standard time control. The mornings can be used for the Rapid and Blitz.

Also, get rid of the STUPID separation into Champs and Major Open tournaments. There should only be a single 9 round swiss New Zealand Open where any NZL player can try to become the NZ Champion. At present, it could be argued that those at the low end of the Champs may not be as strong as those at the high end of the Major Open. We would also avoid having two byes (one for each tournament) as is occurring now.

I think the real reason why we have a closed NZ Championships is to protect players high ratings. If they cannot win against low rated players, their ratings should be allowed to collapse.

And as my rants above indicate, Congress goes on long enough to drive an official insane!! :wall::wall::wall:

Interesting question. So that it aligns with the Island event(s) now in that a nine-rounder can be played in one working week plus the two weekends on either side? (I doubt if it's norms)
What Island events?

We have given up trying to get player norms from the NZ Championships. Local FIDE ratings are just too low.
What is more important now is to build up participation rates. When we cannot even get 100 players to turn up in Auckland, what hope is there for the rest of NZ?

If the goal is to obtain player norms, resources are better spent on invitation only round robins.

We would need to have a large Queenstown type open swiss to provide the opportunity for norms. However, this is expensive.
Hence there will not be a Queenstown 2015.
Anyone who wants to disagree must contribute NZD100,000.

One reason is that it's what a reasonable number of players want, especially the higher end. While convenience for the organisers and arbiters is important, allowing the strong players to get tough games is also helpful. I realise things like accelerated pairings exist, but sometimes it's preferable not to bother, and have the separation. If norms come out of it, great, but guaranteeing tougher competition at the top is good, too.

And yes, a strong player should beat a weaker player, but that doesn't mean that either player actually wants burn 2 weeks leave and $1000+ so they can play games that are effectively pre-determined, and not particularly enjoyable. Most players enjoy level competition the most, and being on either side of lopsided games often isn't fun.

The NZ Champion should be the best player of his peers. Having one big swiss will just mean cannon fodder in the first few rounds, effectively turning the championship into a 5 or 6 round tournament. It is rubbish that players want a "closed" championship to protect their ratings. The goal is to be NZ Champion. An analysis of upset results after the NZ Championship went from a round-robin to a swiss shows that there are few upsets and usually the top 10 players are the top 10! If the 9 round format is to continue then the Championship should revert to a round-robin and the Premier Reserve reinstated. This is sensible and far from STUPID! It would result in much closer and exciting competition as every game would be critical. Any NZ player can be NZ Champion if they are good enough to qualify.

I have since discovered that what I most dislike when performing duties as an arbiter occurs when the last game of the round is over.

Every time I need to do end of round work (enter the results, update standings and crosstables and generate pairings), there are always a number of people who just behave like the world is ending unless they can see the pairings for the next round before anyone else (including me, the chief arbiter!).

I know a number of you who are guilty of this would be reading this so I'll elaborate.
There is absolutely no need to put your head between the arbiter's eyes and his laptop computer's screen. Neither is there any need to stand behind the arbiter and breathe heavily while he is trying to complete all the tasks as accurately and efficiently as possible. It is very irritating to be asked "are the pairings up?" or any questions that can easily be answered by just looking at the noticeboard.
Also, it is most disruptive to efficient workflow to remove printouts as they come out from the printer because you just make it necessary for the arbiter to rearrange the pages into the correct order.

What would have been at most a 5 minute wait before the information you are impatiently waiting for is posted on the noticeboard and uploaded to the website becomes a 10 to 15 minute delay. Causes everyone to wait even longer and makes the arbiter's job more difficult.
Surely waiting 5 minutes at 6pm today is nothing when the next round starts at 1pm TOMORROW!

Keep clear of the arbiters area and things get done better. Just like you should not crowd around a game, you should not crowd around the arbiter's area. I notice that players who tend to be easily distracted (the ones who complain a lot) tend to be the ones who don't extend the same courtesy of giving the arbiter space to do end of round work. When the games are over, noise does not bother me, but I do need to be left alone to do the arbiter's work!

Of course, a big THANK YOU to those who helped after the last game ends.
Instead of rushing off once you've obtained the latest pairing/results info, and leaving me alone to do all the work...
You helped clear up all the cups, drink bottles etc. that were left behind on the tables.
You rearranged the chairs and aligned tables neatly.
Plus all those little things that made it so much easier at the end of the day's games.
I really appreciate it.

I certainly sympathise - although my arbiting duties mainly involved doing the draw by hand in the 1980's and 1990's. I think it is perfectly reasonable to ask for the room (or roped off arbiting area if in a large hall or similar) to be cleared when doing the draw. Indeed, I would have hope a deputy would do this for you.

It would be interesting to hear from other arbiters who have worked in this role more recently than I have.

One solution to this sort of thing is to rope off the arbiter workstation at certain times so players cannot go there. I've also known some arbiters to resort to signs that read "Go away" in some suitably pretentious font and that can be deployed in times of unusual crowding or panic.

I frequently clear the immediate area when working on prize allocations at the end of an event.

We do not have a higher end of players in NZ. Where are the GMs?
Plus we regularly see talented juniors who could reach the "higher end" leave the country.

The idea of a shorter 9 rounds over 9 days competition is so that players only need to burn 1 week's leave and spend less on food and lodging.

Swiss pairings tend to automatically separate the field into strong players and weak ones. Players get 6 or 7 games with players of their strength, but accelerating pairings reduces that to 4 or 5 games.

Serious competition is not meant to be fun. It's a plus if the player enjoys it, but that's not the purpose of a tournament.
I've heard this too often during this Congress. If people want to play chess for fun, they should not join tournaments. Especially not the top tournament in the country. Tournaments are for those who are serious. It's a positive that people find it fun and enjoyable, but that's not even a goal.
If it was for fun, I won't bother about keeping the tournament hall quiet, ensuring good playing conditions, worry about fair competition, enforcing rules, and basically running things professionally.

My overworked and underappreciated deputy (FA Bruce Pollard) would be desperately trying to complete the PGN so that it can be published with the pairings. I'd feel guilty if I added the task of crowd control to his list of things to do at the end of a round.
Doesn't make his job easier when people ask mess up his filed scoresheets to look up potential opponents games.

Maybe we are just too nice and soft to be arbiters!!
Need to get rude and stern... :hmm:

I'm tempted to dump the "friendly arbiters" in favour of some harsher alternative. ;)

Anyway, now that I've got the these rants off my chest, it should be easier to sleep easy tonight.

In the penultimate round, Puchen Wang beat Mike Steadman to take the outright lead in the Championship on 6.5 points. He is half a point ahead of Russell Dive who beat Bob Smith. A further point back are Mike Steadman and William Li who upset Anthony Ker. Wang just needs a draw against Li to win his second title and to do the Championship double. A draw will give Russell Dive a chance of the title if he can beat Steadman. Peter Stuart notched up draw number 8 and is the only unbeaten player in either tournament.

Sean Martin-Buss, on 7 points, has a half-point lead in the Major Open so just needs a draw against Neetheam Al-Muhaisen to win the title. A draw will give Alpahaeus Ang and Paul Macdonald a chance of first place if they can beat Ian McNally and Nigel Cooper respectively.

The main reason I don't play in the chp is the excessive time and cost. The exception is the Queenstown event, where ability to travel by car and stay in a holiday playground makes the extra cost worthwhile. I also enjoyed the Rotorua Zonal for the same reason, and it was only 7 days. The N & S Island chp events provide more chess for your money. Let chess professionals play in the events with 'proper conditions' - let's face it, we a chess country of (dwindling) amateurs.

e.g. The South Island Championship. I played in it in 2012 and it was a nine-rounder. I think it was the same in 2011 and 2013. Not sure about the North Island event though.

Congratulations to Puchen Wang, New Zealand Champion again. Commiserations to Russell Dive for just missing out on an overdue fourth (I think) championship. A brilliant win over Mike Steadman on Sunday was probably never going to be quite enough.

Thanks Keong for running what looked like a very smooth tournament to me during my visit. I enjoyed following the games online too (I know how much of a pain providing this is!)

Hear, hear - I fully agree with Bill's sentiments.

I also enjoyed watching/playing through some enterprising games by IM Anthony Ker, FM Mike Steadman, IM Paul Garbett, FM Ben Hague and up-and-coming junior William Li.

Puchen Wang has won the New Zealand Championship for the second time, his first was in 2007. This is also the second time he has done the double after winning the Rapid Championship for a third time. He also did the double in 2007. Only four players have accomplished this since the Rapid Championship began in 1993. They are Russell Dive, Alexei Kulashko, Anthony Ker (2) and Puchen Wang (2).
