As DOP make sure you submit it to me for rating immediately after it concludes so it makes the December list.

Do you want me to send it direct to you, or send it through Patrick Byrom, which was my original plan as soon as I got home on sunday night.

1850 seems a rather contrived rating limit. Is it historical or what is the point of 1850 as opposed 1800 or 1900?

Dont know really, I am just aware that the tournament exists and has been played for the past few years. I dont know how that rating limit came about. I have taken over as CAQ tournament officer and the u1850 is the first caq tournament on the calendar after my appointment.

I will find out in time why the limit is where it is.

It does not appear to have been held prior to 2000.
It may of course have gone under another name without a rating limit in its name.

In 2000 the limit was U1750.
Perhaps it was some U1600 tournament (QLD Minor Championship) that had its limit lifted to 1750 after the 150 point uplift in April 2000.

It was U1850 in 2001.
In 2002 I dont know as it was not submitted for rating. Perhaps it was not held.
It was U1850 in 2003 & 2004.

Thanks for the history, Bill. If you're right and the tournament was an U1600 one which went up to 1750 after the 150 point uplift, then I wonder what prompted the move to 1850 in 2001. Anyway it seems to have been 1850 (for whatever reason) since then and has not shifted as a result of the recent 70 point uplift.

Still, if they keep on shifting it for uplifts it will soon be an U2200 event and the only Qld player excluded from playing will be Solo. ;)

Ok, U2300. Happy? (Serves my right for not checking I guess).

But if you limit your search to players with a !! rating deviation. Then you have

Did Alex speak to you about the his 'concerns'? :P

Was curious, how come you breached conformity on the start times?

Congrats Garvin, looked like a success. Will there be a forthcoming report?
Yes there will be a report. Maybe even now ;)

22 players entered, which was one up on last year. A very good effort considering that there was only 2 weeks notice for the event. Seven players above 1600 made it a very competitive tournament for the players on the top boards. I would have liked a couple more players from the over 1700 brigade, but that wasnt to be.

Something I did notice however, no one from the gold coast from what I could tell. During the two days, this was also commented to me from some of the players.

The venue was perfect for 22 players and well worth securing in the future. It would handle probably a maximum of 40 players, which is good for most of our 'smaller' tournaments. Central location, air conditioning, generally quiet area, clean playing venue. We will be playing there again in the future I suspect.

We also had two juniors from Hungary who will be here until July with their parents. They were a pleasure to have in the tournament and I am sure we will see them again.

Round 1- Play began at 12:15pm after all the usual general announcements. Only one real upset of sorts out of eleven games by Luthien Russell (11 years old). Not the first upset Luthien would perform in this tournament ;)

Round 2- A good win to Shane Hunter against a 1600 player. Evan Pass is not having a good tournament, losing to two players under 1200 in a row  A draw on board one between Ben Lazarus and Craig Stewart, which then put Ben back level with the other players.

Round 3- Nothing overly special for this round to report

Round 4- Started at 7:30pm and four players took half point byes. Felt like we had been there all day and was running behind time, but we did start at 12pm and so the day is not really longer than a normal 4 round tournament.

Round 5- Started on time and three players took half point byes. Three draws on the top three boards including two shortish draws with plenty of play left in them.

Round 6- An unauthorised withdrawal by Avram Buciu to which I was only told of by a relative as I was about to print the pairings. :hand:

A very good win by Ben Lazarus on board one which gave him a half point lead on the field, with a game against a 1200 player in round seven just for good measure. Oleg Korensevski (1286) continues to cause carnage for the top seeds and will be on board one for round seven.

Round 7- Ben Lazarus makes short work of Oleg on board one to win the tournament outright with 6/7. Then the scoreboard watching begins on boards 2 and 3. Mark Stokes kept wanting to know and looking at the leader board to work out if he only needed a draw to claim outright second. Mark got the draw he needed and Tamas lost, so Mark took second place.

During the final stages of round seven, one player came up to me and said the final round pairings was unfair as he had recieved a player 300 points above him. I looked at the pairings and they were correct. I pointed this out but he was having none of it. Still carrying on how he was unfairly treated. I then asked him who did he play in round six. He didnt want to answer that question and he said that he had also recieved a 300 point higher rated player in a previous rounds. When I checked later, his round six opponent was an unrated player. No wonder he didnt want to reveal that piece of information, wouldnt have helped his argument:doh:
Cant please everyone I guess.

Prize lists:

1st. Ben Lazarus $200
2nd. Mark Stokes $150

Rating Group A: Oleg Korenevski $50
Rating Group B: Luthien Russell $50

I suspect that the handicapper will be catching up with Oleg in a couple of days ;).

A very enjoyable tournament for almost everyone. The next tournament is the CAQ lightning tournament next saturday starting at 4:30pm after the CAQ AGM.
