Or any category. Actually Emma is a similar distance from top of the U20 list in ratings points as Arianne is from top of the outright list, and much closer in terms of number of intervening players. And there are a lot of good signs on the U20 girls list given how young some of the high placings (including Emma) are.

By the way there was about a half-hour delay in the ratings caused by me sending the wrong file as an attachment on Monday night; apologies to the great majority who had successfully completed Patience 101 when the ratings first came out.

A small increase for me of 22 points to be 1524. 1600 is still off in the distance, which is a bit sad as in NZ I peaked at 1666. Perhaps that was a great fire!

Not your fault, but I, and others, will be disappointed that, for whatever reason, the Victorian Teams Division 2 was not included in the tournaments rated. If it is included in the future, results will be up to 9 months out-of-date.

They don't measure the quality of the chess you play - just the number of games you win, lose or draw. :)

In agreement with Ian CCC, I suggest that Victorian team and club competition organisers should be more responsible in regards to their events in the future.

That would help not only rating officers but the image and prestige of their own competitions.

The competition was a shambles. I don’t think I have ever seen so many forfeits
in one competition. In division one alone there were 2 whole team forfeits
including I am sad to say our Box Hill no1 team.
If the competition director had applied the forfeit rules half the players would
have been barred. The thing that was intriguing was that several teams
claimed forfeits without either the forfeit receiver or the giver getting a mention.
Surely that cannot be right. Chess Victoria with a newly elected committee
should have a serious look at both the format and the rules. Well perhaps
the rules were OK if they had been applied.

Harsh words of criticism and self - criticism. But absolutely TRUE!

Having said the above, let me add that my team (BHCC 2) not only played all their games without any forfeits and without any of our players coming late to the board but we were victims of our good will and sportmanship. That is we gave a second chance to a team who forfeited against us in the first round! I know that might sound as sour grapes but that piece of sportmanship cost us the title. Anyway, back to the positives since having played in that team under the management of Peter Tsai it was one of the greatest experiences of my chess life!

Since the number of games you win lose or draw against opponents with particular ratings is closely related to the quality of your chess then your rating is a measure of the quality of your chess. That is the whole point of having a ratings system.Of course it is not a perfect system and even if it were there would still be statistically random variation in your rating to a certain extent.

Quality of chess is one factor. There are others such as luck, temperament and ability of the opposition. The point is the rating measures results not chess quality. The only thing it says about quality of chess played is indirectly through the results of the games in the rating period.

That is the whole point of having a ratings system.

No, the primary purpose is to have a means to predict the outcome of future games based on prior results. It doesn't pretend to measure how "good" your chess playing is unless by "good" you simply mean "likelihood to win games". While playing good chess increases your likelihood to win games I don't believe most people see these two things as synonymous and in particular I don't believe this is what Alana meant when she described her chess-play as "shocking".

Of course it is not a perfect system and even if it were there would still be statistically random variation in your rating to a certain extent.

Yes there is a variation in your results leading to a variation in the rating. But that is beside the point. The original comment by Alana was that she was surprised by her rating increase because her impression was she had not played good chess. My reply was just pointing out that it is game results and not quality of chess that matters. You can play like a beginner but if your opponent plays worse you will get rating points. You can play like a GM but if your opponent does also and better, you will lose rating points.

Thank-you to Leonid, Bill and whoever else was involved in correcting the problem promptly. Much appreciated. My view is that if it is at all possible he players should not be disadvantaged due to organiser/arbiters not submitting events on time.

Therefore since the missing events arrived within 24 hours it was reasonable to rerun the December ratings.

And there are a lot of good signs on the U20 girls list given how young some of the high placings (including Emma) are.

The spread of ratings in the U20 list is less than 400 points, and the largest gap is between Morris and Cheng, a difference in rating of less than 3.3%. It is hard to fairly divide the players into a stronger group and a weaker group.

By contrast, the spread of ratings in the top U20 females is more than 1000 points, and it is easy to divide them into a stronger and a weaker group; the difference in rating between Caroline and Denise is a massive 22%, so there are 13 players in the strong group rated 1404-2087 and 7 players in the weak group rated 980-1151.

The strong group can itself be easily divided into a stronger group and a weaker group, by noticing that the gap between Tamzin and Penelope is more than 8.5%. Thus the U20 list is evenly distributed, but the U20 females can be clearly divided into a very strong group (Emma, Alana and Penelope), an average group (Tamzin down to Caroline) and a weak group (Denise down to Alanna).

Expressing rating differences by percentage isn't useful as ratings work by differences - you could add or subtract the same number to every rating and everything works the same. So the difference between 2001 and 2011 is negigible, but if the ratings were uniformly shifted down by 2000 points then the higher rated player is 1000% higher. It's the absolute difference that has meaning.

A question for Bill Gletsos.

I once heard a story that if a player won a tournament he could not lose rating points.

Is this the case?No.
If a player does not perform to their rating they will lose rating points even if they won the tournament.
As far as I am aware it never has been the case even under the old ACF Elo system.

At some stage in the past FIDE has this in place but dropped it years ago.
