Could not you have brought your king down to protect pawns? I hinted hours ago in SB, your rook had his pawns under control.

my king will end up roughly on f2 his king on g4 then the g pawn shuffles down.

I meant for your king to escort your own pawns down but it is too far away and his knight has freaky control

if kevin had of played 48... nb5 i would have won. that is what i spent time calculating variations for.

my rook definately does not control ALL his kingside pawns a/c. it would have only held them up adequately to queen on the queenside had kevin played the ..nb5 move.

it does little to hold them back with kevins much better move 48...nc8.

only looked for a minute so sorry if talking BS as usual. I meant for your king to escort your own pawns down, your rook covered his pawns for quite a few moves

his knight easily covers the a and b pawns. for the time that i need to get my king and b pawn up to the eighth rank kevin has easily gotten his king down to g2. either one of the f/h pawns promotes.

the only reason 48..nb5 allows me to win is because i get to keep attacking the knight.

ill post a line i calculated following on from 48...nb5.

sorry to harp, but I thought you wasted moves when game reduced to two pieces each, you did not double up your pieces in attack and other tactics. You tried to close game down too early coz strictly speaking rook against knight is draw (if remembering correctly)

something like 48...nb5 49 b4 nxc3+ 50 kb3 nb5 51 ka4 nc7 52 a7 na8 etc works out for me as i can keep retaining tempi by attacking his knight with my king and move towards the 8th rank.

Could not you have brought your king down to protect pawns? I hinted hours ago in SB, your rook had his pawns under control.

His rook only has the pawns under control until my king arrives and I bring up the g-pawn.

Thanks for the game JbT !, it was quite a memorable one.

Your 11.Qc3 was a strong move that caught me by surprise and I blundered almost immediately after. I thought I was fine because I intended 15...Bb7 then only realised on the move that this loses a piece to 16.Bf3 as I can't move the bishop because of back rank mate. :hmm: :wall:

After that I was in theory losing but I knew it would be quite difficult for white to force the win provided I kept queens on. When you set up the queen-rook battery (which was harmless) I thought I had good winning chances but a few moves later I found my position difficult and was just trying to make sure I wouldn't lose.

I think the mistake is actually right at the end: playing 46.a5 before dropping the rook back gives me time to play ...f3 which basically chains your rook to hanging around near the pawns. If instead 46.Re2 (Re1 doesn't work) then I don't have ...f3. I will bring my king up but you have time to use the rook against my Nc8 idea, so I will probably have to play Nb5. After all if you can take my knight in time to bring your rook back and sac it then I'm probably cactus.

Also 45.a5 seems OK. Yes I queen first with a move in hand but I can't stop you queening and in fact I can't do anything with my new queen except start grovelling for draws.

A very exciting game. Commiserations to Juice by Tappy who was unlucky not to win a winning position, but full credit to Kevin who refused to give up and was ultimately rewarded for his tenacity.

Looking forward to seeing the rematch :)

i played like a muppet.

as soon as i put the queen on c8 and the rook on d7 my 2.50 point advantage (according to what pocket fritz currently says) halved and im not too surprised. I should have paid more attention to my kingside pawns and maybe kept up with my theme of chasing kevins queen around the board till it was advantageous to start pushing the k-side pawns.

i started to regret these 2 moves no less than about 3 moves after they were played when i started fiddling about on the 8th rank with an idea that clearly wasnt going to threaten anything.

45.a5 may be more than OK for white - here is a sample variation with black's useless new queen:

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 dxe4 5.Nxe4 Be7 6.Bxf6 Bxf6 7.Nxf6 Qxf6 8.Nf3 0-0 9.Qd2 c5 10.0-0-0 Rd8 11.Qc3 b6 12.Be2 cxd4 13.Rxd4 Rxd4 14.Nxd4 Qf4+ 15.Kb1 Nd7 16.Bf3 Rb8 17. Nc6 Bb7 18. - there is no perpetual and it is not entirely clear that black is safe although I suspect it is still drawable.

I didn't mind AC's interference since all of his comments on the game during it were clueless. Not that I had much idea what was going on at stages either!

Steven - thanks for the Critter graph and variations. Yes I recall now briefly looking at queening the f pawn instead of the h pawn just because although it was slower it seemed to be a cleaner draw (bizzarely enough). And I never would have guessed that 32...Qxg2 could be an error and ...Nc4 was correct - that line with 32...Qxg2 33.Qc7 is quite an eye opener as to how complex and strange this all is.

There isn't any collated archive of correspondence games. They all stay on the board in their threads and finished tournaments are moved to the archived forums section. I'm thinking of a cleanout to archive all the old unfinished games and add scores in the thread heading to all games that are finished.

to show how clueless I am the most amazing aspect of that game was the illustrative play of knight on 8th rank, even if pawns came down in protecting themselves then the king could not come between them to attack knight - bet that was not planned

i reckon kb had a very good idea that it actually WOULD happen and calculated how quickly his kindside pawns would promote as opposed to my queenside.

once again your input has been of immense value. :wall:

I didn't need to plan it - it is obvious that the pawns can't get through against Nc8 by themselves and if the king has to actually come up and take the knight then at best it will be too slow. My king and pawns are faster.

In deciding to swap queens I had to look at the 45.a5 and 46.Re2 lines most of all. Both of them seemed a bit hazardous for me (it seems they are both draws) but there just seemed to be no alternative.

what was illustrative was how his king would have had to come via the c file before pawns could be advanced to a7 or b6 - that was many extra moves - planned?

Well actually his king is just as slow getting to c8 no matter what file it comes by. The important thing is just that the pawns cannot do it by themselves because the c-pawn is held back by the d-pawn. The funny thing there is that in other lines the d-pawn was a nuisance because it blocked my new queen!

Obviously White should have won with a whole exchange ahead. The unbalanced pawn structure, with rival pawn majorities, is hard for the short-range knight to cope with. A move like 29.f4 followed by g3 would consolidate the K-side and restrict the enemy N, then white could aim for a4-a5 to weaken the enemy Q-side, or just gang up on them with Q+R. With White's K-side pawns intact, any Black advances there would expose the K to combined Q+R. Black is restricted because a Q-exchange is a trivial loss, so White's Q could occupy a dominating square at will.
