Good to see this event happening again. Most impressive having a GM* in the event plus several NZ Championship level (or thereabouts) players too.

I won the Palmerston North CC Ch'p in 1997 (or 1998?) but the Club went into recess some time after that.

* That is, the correspondence variety.

John McDonald and me are making the weekly commute from Wanganui, approx 1 hour drive one way.The Palmerston North club now must be one of the strongest provincial CC in NZ.

I well remember the commute in the other direction from Palmie to play at the Wanganui CC. I kept it up for one season but driving for an hour in wet/icy weather in the middle of the night wasn't much fun.

Just on a side note, I see that I am no longer the highest rated player in Wanganui.FM Ben Hague elo approx 2300 from England has made Wanganui his home for the time being and has popped along to the Palmerston North CC.

Will the Championship be NZCF rated?
Informed that it will not be.

In order to be FIDE-rated, an event must be registered with FIDE at least a month before it starts. Time controls, schedules, arbiters etc must be confirmed with NZCF in order for us to register the event. And of course you have to pay! Once registered, the event appears on the FIDE calendar, so anyone can check if it will be FIDE-rated or not (well that's the theory anyway).

By the way, Wanganui is still not an affiliated NZCF club this year (so it can't have registered players, or vote at the AGM). I have tried emailing various contacts but with no reponse (probably I have out-of-date emails). If anyone would like to put Wanganui CC back on the map, please contact me!

Yes, well done Mark   (Good to see you can still move the pieces at a 'normal' pace too!)

And while congrats are going, the same to Quentin for winning the 2011 Otago Championship

Well done Mark, it was especially good achievement considering that towards the end to play the catch up games Mark and Ben decided to play a clock simul against 3 players at a time.I was quite lucky to get a win against Ben when he was busy playing Mark Noble and Jack James at the same time. The full cross table of results is here.http://kiwichess.blogspot.com/

Interesting to hear that games were played simultaneously.

Reminds me of my boyhood when I remember Robert Wansink playing a massive simul at the age of about 13 in a bid to win the Otago CC 'Perpetual Handicap' (awarded to the person with the biggest increase in [club] rating for the year). The practice of played simuls involving rated games was soon banned though.
