Do many people use Scid ? It's a general purpose chess toolkit/database app.
The mainstream project has lots of interface issues, but i've been trying to clean it up in the last couple of years.
New features include rewritten gamelist, Fics and help widgets, and a simple Computer Tournament.

Scid vs. PC homepage (http://scidvspc.sf.net)
Windows zip file (https://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?group_id=263836&filename=scid_vs_pc-windows-4.4.1.zip)

The project requires TCL (http://www.activestate.com/activetcl/downloads) to be installed.

I like scid and use it from time to time. There is another thread on it somewhere. I seem to recall Rincewind also uses it. Glad to hear you are improving it.

I've often hear people complain about the interface in Scid, but frankly I don't see why! It is very easy to learn (and there are helpful articles at Scid's page as well as excellent tutorial videos on chessvideos.tv) and is supported by many helpful keyboard shortcuts. I have tried Scid vs. PC and it was alright but I saw no reason to change.

I personally use ChessDB rather than Scid, but it's based on Scid, and is also more than adequate IMO.

I think Shane Hudson (Scid's original author) was a Kiwi. Does anyone know what happened to him or what he's doing ?

Craig_Hall

He's from Chch, and dropped by the All Canterbury Champs last year to have a look at our new clubrooms. He seemed well enough, but he hasn't been active for quite a few years now.

Agent Smith

Cheers for that. Glad to hear he's ok... He must have spent quite some time writing Scid, so it's suprising he apparently abandoned it.

I wrote up a short history of Scid (http://scidvspc.sourceforge.net/index.html#ss6.4) a little while ago. Am i mistaken about anything ?

.... Yah, ChessDB is basically Shane's database program and is good enough for that end. Still, it's user interface is fairly broken imho :wall:, but no worse than mainline Scid i guess.

Seriously, what is wrong with Scid's interface?

Seriously, what is wrong with Scid's interface?
The gamelist widget is a real mess, dead links don't get removed from the "File" menu, icons are awful, the board options widget(s) are ugly and hard to use. ..... etc. etc.

I don't really want to run through the thousand odd changes i've made to it, or start a flame war. :eh: People can get used to anything.

Hey Steve. You need to fix the Mask - Comment issues though. There's an application error in Scid-vs-PC (windows) that prevents comments to the mask.

Sorry about that - it was an untested code snippet from last time i synced with mainline SCID's tree. It's fixed in SVN now, with some extra work done to the mask feature / help file.

I probably should mention we now have a proper windows installer for Scid vs. PC. :P Thanks to Jiří Pavlovský.

This executable (http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/windows-beta/Scid%20vs%20PC-29092011.exe/download) will first prompt user if they need to download the Tcl framework required by Scid, then install the actual program and add file type associations for ".pgn" and Scid's database, ".si4"

It's slightly newer than Scid vs. PC-4.5 (so the documentation is a little incomplete), and not an official release. I'm just putting it out there because installers are a big thing to many people, and i don't plan to make a proper 4.6 release for at least a couple of months.

Sorry if that's wrong (note the year is quite old). I have quite a few games of Kevin Bonham in my hacked Ozbase DB, but none with ELOs. PM me your personal database if you like.

I don't have the slightest how strong anyone except Max is around here .... and i'm only 1800 at a stretch, with no competitive experience.

Kevin Bonham
31-10-2011, 09:48 PM
Actually is "Bonham" even meant to be the label for one of the lines shown, and if so which one? I assumed the brown line was me but maybe I am a red dot around the same place as Stojic in 2005? (That would make sense then.) If so who is the brown line?

I am compiling a computer database of my old games but very slowly (I'm up to about 2001), and installing ratings is among my lower priorities.

Agent Smith

Yes - you're the red dot. The Brown line is Ly, but his name is being monstered by the indominitable Illingworth. :eh:

Kevin Bonham
31-10-2011, 10:55 PM
Ah, that makes sense then. Games by me from the 2004-5 Aus Open especially are widely databased although I suspect most versions include only rounds 1-9.

OK, I've given Scid vs PC a second chance, sorry to be a pain and ask the obvious, but how to I dock Windows?

Agent Smith
01-11-2011, 09:55 AM
Sorry - it'll never have Scid's docking feature. Just too many niggles. :eh:

Here's a windows snapshot (http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/windows-beta/scid_20111101.zip/download) which includes the new graph capabilities, undo+redo, and better search/game-browser-ply co-ordination. To install - both "scid.gui" and "scid.exe" should overwrite the previous files.

Yes ... it can be a pain, but 's a problem with many multi windowed apps, unless they're initially designed as a single window. SCID's docked windows arent bad, but it detracts from it's reliability and focus issues occasionally affect things like comments not getting stored and on ossasion a crashing engine or toplevel can crash the whole thing and it will refuse to restart.

To help out, pressing the 'Tab' key in Scid vs. PC main window raises all subwindows, and there is also an autoiconify/autoraise feature which i think is enabled by default.

Agent Smith

New features include
Undo and Redo (partly from SCID)
Microsoft Windows installer
Always loads games at the correct game ply when using the tree and searches.
Ratings graph can show multiple players (and there's a minimum ELO feature)
Book tuning 'Remove move' feature
Annotation improvements, and it is now possible to score All moves while only annotating Blunders.

Hello Stevenaaus,
Firstly thanks for doing this.I have been looking for this type of thing for a long time and would love to use it as my main chess database program.Unfortunately as the headline states it didn't install for me.I have TCL/Tk 8.5 installed but it said

src/tkscid.h:56:17: fatal error: tcl.h: No such file or directory

during the "make install" command

Also why don't you automate the installation of TCL/Tk by putting the relevant commands in the makefile?

Agent Smith
05-01-2012, 04:57 PM
I think you have to install the tcl, tk and xorg development packages. I don't use ubuntu, but the command is probably
sudo apt-get tcl-devel tk-devel xorg-devel
Then re-run configure, make, and make install
(EDIT: or is it sudo apt-get install tcl-devel tk-devel xorg-devel)

Also why don't you automate the installation of TCL/Tk by putting the relevant commands in the makefile?
Each different distro of linux has it's own packaging system, and it's not feasible to handle package installation from the makefile.

Steve

I've tried to fix up the most annoying issues with the Player versus UCI Engine feature. This is handy, as the latest Stockfish engines (2.1 and 2.2) have a great configurable "Skill Level" feature.

Here's a windows update (http://http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/windows-beta/scidvspc_20120108.zip/download) which includes the above updates. Just overwrite these two files into the previous full release.

Dear Forum users,

I installed SCID on my MacBook Pro and it worked until today when I tried to import pgn files to a new mini database I created. Now when I try to invoke the "Import File of PGN Games" from Tools, I get an error message and I cannot seem to get rid of it!!!

Message reads:

bad directory "[name of directory]"
bad directory "[name of directory]"
while executing
"tk_getOpenFile -multiple 1 -initialdir $::initialDir(pgn) -filetypes $ftypes -title "Import from PGN files" "
(procedure "importPgnFile" line 24)

Does anyone know what to do/explain what is happening?

Thanks.

I've accrued a few changes in the last half year, so here's a new release.

Windows http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/windows/Scid%20vs%20PC-4.8.exe/download

OS X http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/mac/ScidvsMac-4.8.dmg/download

Source http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/source/scid_vs_pc-4.8.tgz/download

Changelog: 4.7 to 4.8

General
Drag and Drop file open(s) on Windows and Unix (into the gameinfo area, and switcher)
Custom background images (jpegs, gifs and pngs)
Random sort pgn feature.
Crosstable now have +/-/= subtotals
(and Player Stats format changed from +/=/- to +/-/=).
General PGN search has ignore case option
Board Search gets it's combobox updated when DBs are opened and closed.
Save game before PGN Import
Save game: enable the use of 'prev game tags' for existing games. This allows easy addition of the same tags to consecutive existing games.
Remove the 'Scid: ' prefix from several window titles
Update some translations
Show Linux version/distro in the startup window.
Add a patch to make toolbar buttons raise only (instead of toggle open/shut)
Add a patch for Chess960 support (from Ben Hague). Unfinished

Analysis
UCI: properly handle UCI buttons. Previously they were invoked at every engine restart.
Right clicking 'Add Var' button adds Engine Score comment only.
Replace ponder on/off with hard/easy for xboard engines
Super quick engine infos can happen before Scid's PV is inited properly. So we have to default to PV = 1
Allow xboard engines to use lowercase 'b' for bishop promotion (eg a7b8b)
Don't send an erroneous 'isready' (with 'uci') to quiet analysis engines
Right clicking the widget allows to disable line wrapping
Don't add a line to analysis history if moves are null

Tree
Move ECO stats to the end of line.
Several Mask refinements - notably Searches are much more readable and previously clicking on searched lines didn't work
Fix up minor bugs about castling moves (OO, O-O, O-O-O)

Computer Tournament
Computer Tournament Book feature
Dont' kill tournament if engine crashes.
Only pack the first 10 engine combos (which allows for big tournaments)
Fix up Xboard time/move command order. Xboard engines should behave much better.
Various other tweaks

Gamelist
Show altered games in red.
Control-wheelmouse scrolls up/down one page.
Switcher now has text on two lines (if icons are shown).

FICS
Digital clocks now (optionally) on the main board
Better integration of FICS "examine" and "observe" features
FICS has it's own options menu
bind F9 to xtell instead of tell.
Change the move.wav sound from tick-tock to a short click.

OS X
Filter graph bugfix
Material Search properly shows the little buttons
Copy and Paste text from disabled OSX text widgets (engines, help, gameinfo)
Buttons 2 and 3 are swapped around

General Bugs
Work arounds for wish 8.5.12 and 8.5.8 issues
Analysis logs can badly break autoscroll, so use normal frames and scrollbars.
Handle PGN parsing of unspecified promotions (b8 becomes b8=Q , for eg).

Dear Steven,

Thanks for your work on Scid vs Mac. I have downloaded 4.9 and install. Not sure I am happy. I can see the docked window but it is making things really slow, like loading the database, loading a game. On the other hand some other things are really fast now.

I am really tempted to go back to 4.7. BTW is that possible?

One bug this far: I find when I load a game, I cannot click on a move in the pgn window to jump to that position. Nor can I play through the game using the arrow keys on the keyboard.

Any advice?

Are you using a Mac ? Docked mode works quite poorly on OS X. :( And keyboard bindings are broke too.
If you're not using a Mac please copy and paste me the contents of your Help->StartupWindow

Sure... But i'd recommend just disabling docked mode in Options->Windows->Dock Windows, and then restart app.

Just re-read your post and I never did try disabling .......

BTW, I would like to suggest/request an additional feature. In days before Mac, I used a PC and installed ChessDB. One great feature of ChessDB was the automated download of TWICs into my TWIC database. This feature is not present in SCID nor in Scid vs Mac (?). Of course when TWIC went over to a new website, the automated updates did not work since the programmer of ChessDB was no longer updating.
My request: Is it possible to have something similar in Scid vs Mac? (Of course if you do programme something similar, I will have to figure out how to download and install without docking.)

Query: If I am using a base as tree and I wish to see a game and merge the game, is it the case that the annotations to that particular game is not "merged"?

But thanks for all your hard work. There are still features which I have yet to test.

> I can see the docked window but it is making things really slow, like loading the database, loading a game. On the other hand some other things are really fast now.

Are you using a Mac ? Docked mode works quite poorly on OS X. :( And keyboard bindings are broke too.
If you're not using a Mac please copy and paste me the contents of your Help->StartupWindow

> I am really tempted to go back to 4.7. BTW is that possible?

Sure... But i'd recommend just disabling docked mode in Options->Windows->Dock Windows, and then restart app.

The twic2scid.py pythn script was updated in Scid vs. PC 4.9. It is clumsy, and untested on OS X and windows, but it should work.

Yes - comments/annotations are not merged. Is it possible... desirable... hmmm ?. The idea is in my little red book. :) but i have other priorities, and am busy with work too atm.

Dear Steven,

Thanks for your help. Ver 4.8 works fine for me on Mac. Is the TWIC download avail on ver 4.8 mac?

My main query is re SCID (the original updated) and the mobile version. AusJCL is preparing for Johns-Putra JETS and we have chess-logo'ed USB sticks for sale to juniors and parents. But we intend to fill them with chess goodies (all legal!). I was thinking of installing a mobile ver of SCID for the kids so they can have a chess database to play around with. Do you know if the SCID ver works? and works on a USB stick (ie runs sole from a USB stick attached to a PC)?

D'oh! I just serached for SCID on the web and realised that it has now been changed and the mobile ver is gone.

My query now: is there a mobile ver of SCID or any of its forks which can be installed and run from a USB stick?

Thanks in advance.

You get get the download script here
http://sourceforge.net/p/scidvspc/code/HEAD/tree/scripts/twic2scid.py?format=raw

There is now no mobile version of Scid or ScidvsPC.
Android does not support Xorg, and the Apple store (iOS/iPad) does not accept GPL software.

Just installing the windows version to a USB stick should work fine i think.
Alternatively there is the separate "Scid on the Go" (with very reduced functionality) for Android ... which i should try out now that i have a new phone.

Try this point release for OS X. Broken windows in docked mode might be fixed, and i had other bugs in 4.9.1 too :(

I have used ScidvsPC installed on a USB drive with a netbook and Windows 7 and had no problems.
This idea of selling USB drives to the juniors sounds very good, especially if they have the training material on them as well.
The big trick will be getting them to refer to the material included, in the future, as a refresher.

Thanks Steven, but I am afraid my computer skills do not extend that far and I am not sure what to do with the python script.

Thanks. I will try that. I prefer Scid vs PC than Scid (way to go Steven! and keep up the good work!)

And yes, getting them to repeat the exercises is the key.

After a few little hiccups and point releases, i thought i'd make this release 4.10 instead of another 4.9.x. It's basically a consolidation of the docked mode, but with a couple of handy features - Database Sort doesn't reset game or filter, and there's now a 'Game History' in the game menu.

There's been a few last second changes, but the files should now be finalised.

Just a note about sound - The OSX and windows packages have the Tcl sound package (snack) included, but it's an unmaintained project, so users will have to opt-in and configure sound themselves, and playback issues are to be expected. Linux users fair even worse. Try "apt-get install tcl-snack" or something, but playback is very buggy in my experience.

http://scidvspc.sourceforge.net/index.html#toc3

4.10 (August 25, 2013)

When sorting databases, don't reset filter and remember current game/gamestate
Game history menu
Implement (and bugfix) SCID's more comprehensive NAG framework
Change a couple of field orders in the gamelist, remember field widths, and remove the icon context menus from the switcher (middle click now toggles show/hide the database icons)
FICS: Allow use of alternative URLs (used during FICS outage) and other minor tweaks
Window focus improvements (mainly for MS Windows and OS X)
Computer Tournament: add 'Engine Scores as comments' option, and make some minor global/:: var changes
Add Book Tuning to dockable windows
Automatically flip board (if applicable) in game browser and analysis miniboards.
When diffing twin games, ignore newlines in the comments, which make diffing impossible
Add undo points for user generated addNag events
Bookmarks: add a few key bindings (delete/up/down), and shuffle the gamelist bookmark button up one row
Drag and drop hardening
Windows 7 bugfix: PGN export and Progress bars weren't working in undocked mode
Translation framework updates. Overhaul Dutch translation, and remove (broken) Russian one
Convert braces '{', '}' to '(',')' when exporting PGN comments (against PGN standard). Also tweak various PGN help topics

Upgrade to new win 64 version was straightforward with no issues. Thanks Steve (and originally my old Chch chess mate Shane Hudson, who first developed this excellent open source software).

A good recommendation for SCID is from chess games database ICOfy. http://icofy-blog.de/icofy-base/

"Begin with the ICOfY Base?

First, you need a chess software which can at least open the PGN file format. I recommend SCID, because it is a good free open source software. Afterwards, you only need to download the latest Release and all later updates of Icofy Base. "

I also recommend SCID myself if like me you can't justify/ afford $300+ for full ChessBase.

Perfect score performance ratings are always dodgy and arbitrary (we had some very brief discussion of them here: http://www.chesschat.org/showthread.php?12161-Performance-ratings-models-for-100-and-0-scores). That one seems to use the average of the opponent's ratings +999, which is rather generous for 4/4 given that 3.5/4 is only +322. I think something in the 3200s (+400 to 500) would be fairer for 4/4.

Chessbase were going to implement giving the player a notional draw with themselves, but they seem to not have carried through with it and instead to have stuck to the completely arbitrary +800.

Thanks Kevin. Yah - the FIDE table is 800. Maybe when SCID's PR tables were made up, FIDE were using 999 also.

We have a Russian translation now. :P It is in subversion to test out, and we'll probably release 4.13 in a few weeks.

Folks, note post 71. This is really good open source software being developed by one of our own CC community.
Now time to get organised to play blitz today (NSW champs).

Scid vs. PC 4.14
http://scidvspc.sourceforge.net/#toc3

Quite a few various changes
http://scidvspc.sourceforge.net/#toc7

The easiest to use computer-versus-player feature (Play->Computer Phalanx)
has been updated to Phalanx XXIV. It plays a lot better than previous versions,
but i dare say my ELO slider (from 1400 to 2400) is not accurate , so any advice
about how strong the levels are would be welcome. Hard for me to say as i'm
not an experienced player, and have little patience for serious games actually :)

I think it's generally kind-of hard to get computers playing weakly. AFAICS Stockfish
doesnt do a bad job of it. You can play stockfish (if installed of course) using
Play->Computer UCI, and then configure the "Skill Level" of Stockfish (1 being it's weakest).
