The next big tourny in NZ is the Queens Birthday Waitakere Open.I have entered and it will be the 1st time ever that I have played in it.So far there has been 23 entries as of 23/5.The prize pool is close to $7000 and has a relatively low $50 entry fee, so makes it quite attractive. http://sites.google.com/site/waitakerechess/waitakere-trust-open

There's an error on Entry Form.
Players who are not NZCF registered need to pay $20 NZCF registration fee.
The NZCF registration fee on the botton tear off part incorrectly states $15(which was last year's price).

At this late stage, not worth correcting the entry form. Would just chase up incorrect payments.
Most entries would already be NZCF registered anyway.

See you there!

Does any one know who the DOP is?

Does any one know who the DOP is?

FA Bruce Pollard is the Chief Arbiter/DOP.
FM Ewen Green is the Deputy Arbiter.

I'll be standing in for Ewen on the one day he cannot make it.

Thanks, Bruce did a good job at the North Island, but only had to control 25 players, the Waitakere is shaping up to have 70-80 players so he might need some extra help from the likes of you and Ewen.

Bruce Pollard has had a great deal of experience running large events, including Congress and previous Waitakeres. His application for the title of International Arbiter is currently being processed. There is no question about his ability to cope with this Waitakere event! Ably assisted by Ewen and Keong, of course.

I count 90 entries as at 1 June 2011. There'll be a few last minute entries.

Entries have already closed.
Only thing left to do is to see if those who have entered actually turn up.
i.e. could be less players but cannot be more.

Other than a few last minute (practically literally!) entries earlier tonight, there should be no other entries.

There's more than 96 entries since the number was at 96 on 2 June (yes I checked last night) and you say there's more entries earlier tonight. :D

Yes, I did hear some names mentioned by Bob Smith while we were setting up the tournament hall.

Sorry I do not remember the names to check, so cannot confirm if there are more than 96.

Was more concerned that the boards are set up right, and the clocks had 90minutes + 30seconds increment, and not 90minutes30seconds total time.

101 players registered for the Waitakere Licensing Trust Open (http://j.mp/jqdZqd), a Think Big Stud (http://www.thinkbigstud.com.au/) NZ Chess Grand Prix Super Class event. Players' meeting included speeches from tournament organiser Bob Smith, Waitakere Chess club (http://sites.google.com/site/waitakerechess/Home) President John Francis,Waitakere Licensing Trust (http://www.thetrusts.co.nz/wa.asp?idWebPage=12955&idDetails=141) President (http://www.waitakereenterprise.co.nz/news/local-stories/new-waitakere-licensing-trust-president-breaks-glass-ceiling.html) Linda Cooper (http://www.elections2010.co.nz/2010/candidates/linda-cooper) and concluded with a run through of tournament rules + misc housekeeping tasks by DOP Bruce Pollard. The tournament was started by Linda Cooper making the 1st move on board 1 of the A Grade tournament.

Registered player numbers for each grade: A-grade (36); B-grade (24); C-grade (20); Junior (21).
I left before default time (30mins). There were very few late/no show then. It is a wet, cold and windy day in Auckland. Good weather to be indoors playing chess!

Leonard McLaren won out right with 5/6, he had 5 points going into the last round and his nearest rival was on Russell Dive was on 4 points.Dive ended up losing to Bob Smith and McLaren was involved with a tough game against Krstev which finished after the Dive game.
I think there was a 3 way tie for 2nd with Smith, Krstev, Steadman all winning their last round games to end up on 4.5, and rounding out the 5 spot was Alan Ansell on 4 points.
I ended up down the field with 2 points.
