Looks like I 'll be available to squeeze this couple of weeks in the rest of my very busy schedule.
I 've visited KL twice before but stayed in another hotel closer to the Secretariat (magnificent building)!
I checked out Hotel, looks reasonably OK and their prices are alarmingly low. Wonder what's the catch! :P
Is the tournament taking place in the Citidel Mid Valey Hotel? I know I am asking too many questions! :P

Hi Brian
Unfortunately, I can't make it for the tournament since I will be departing for the US right after the Oldies Super Champs finish in Melbourne for at least two weeks.
However, I will be flying from LA to Kuala Lumpur at some stage during the tournament to come and barrack for you guys as well as taking some pictures!
Cheers and good luck to all Aussies and New Zealanders!

Here are the Round 1 pairings (http://datmo.net/2011/08/17/datmo-round-1-pairing/).

A few Aussies are playing GMs in the first round, namely Fedja (Black vs. Cao Sang), Emma (White vs. Saidali Iuldachev) and Karl (Black vs. Elmar Gasanov).

A 360 degree panorama (http://360.io/KBZrF2) of the playing venue is also viewable online.

Some of the games will be broadcast live (http://pakchess.org/tournament-news/malaysia-chess-festival-2011-live). Edit: The site has since been updated: 'Respected Visitors! We are sorry to say, Live games will not be available.'

After the first day, James is doing the best of the Aussies with 2/2, followed by Bobby and Chris on 1.5/2.

Notable results in Round 2 were James's win against IM Richard Bitoon, Bobby's draw with GM Roland Salvador, Chris's draw with WGM Ju Wenjun, and Zachary's draw with Justin Ong Way.

Mischa

James drew round 3

Alana
20-08-2011, 12:12 AM
yep, James drew his round 3 game with another 2400 (this time a chinese IM) and has a GM to contend with this round. There is a few Aussie players sitting on 2/3 as well.

The only Aussie in the seniors Brian Jones is also on 2.5/3 after drawing with a 2300 IM in round 2, and beating up an unrated in round 3.

I'm the only Aussie player in the Challengers and am on 1/3 - was winning both of my first two games and blundered and lost, and the round 3 game which I won I was a pawn down move 4 because I don't know theory! Giving up the scandi forever!

Anyway a bit of an update - Malaysia is fantastic and the people are so friendly. We're lucky to have a really cheap Megamall next to the hotel where we don't even have to go outside to access. And I mean cheap - had McDonalds yesterday for $2 AUS and saw a movie tonight for $6. :)

Will post another update sometime soon.

BTW: I have a blog http://alanachess.blogspot.com which I will try to update - at the moment it won't let me because it claims there is too much traffic from my computer - I'm guessing because I had a homepage as a different blog. But I will let you know when it is updated!

Today was the first rest day for the tournament, so I wouldn't have a clue what the others have been up to! Emma flew back to Australia yesterday after getting sick. She flew back with a Malaysian nurse all the way to Canberra, as she needed support because she couldn't stand without feeling like she needed to throw up. She spent last night in Canberra Hospital on a drip and medication, and she went home today after feeling a bit better and is now resting.

James is doing really well! SE Asia seems to agree with him :D

I recall (New Year? which one?!) when he was only a bit above 2200 that he said he hoped to get to FIDE 2400. Well at present he's 2300 (and I know he's been at or around 2300 a coupl of times before), but right now he's up a stunning +50 or +60 extra 'live' rating points in the last couple of months, so he's certainly well on the way to cracking 2400 and breaking into the elite echelon of Australian players

It doesn't - he has only played two full GMs and would be half a point short anyway by my quick calculations. Strong performance all the same.

The Merdeka Individual Rapid has started and the Malaysia Chess Open Blitz Chess Championship has just finished.

Junta is currently on 3.5/4 in the Rapid, beating three lower rated players and drawing with GM Iuldachev. He is White against WFM Zhai next round.

The top-scoring Aussies in the Blitz were Junta and James, who both scored 6/9. Incidentally both defeated GM Wen Yang and Junta also defeated GM Wang Rui.

The final standings for the Aussies in the Malaysian Open were as follows:

5.5/9 Lane, Cheng

5/9 Morris, Ikeda, Wallis

4.5/9 Zulfic, Zelesco

3.5/9 Tan

3/9 Loh

James's performance rating was the highest of the Aussies: 2441 according to chess-results, though as chess-results is not completely accurate, his true performance rating is higher. Congratulations on an excellent result.

In the Seniors' event, Brian had an excellent performance, scoring 5.5/9, beating two higher players (one an IM), and drawing with another higher-rated player (also an IM).

The final event of the Malaysian Chess Festival happened yesterday and today, which was the ASTRO Merdeka Rapid Teams Championship. Australian's went very well, the Klang Valley Kangaroos scored 23/36 gaining 7th place, while the Klang Valley Koalas (WIM Nafisa Muminova (UZB), Samantha Lee (MAS), Alana Chibnall (AUS) and Hweimeen Chai (AUS)) came 14th overall and picked up the 10th place prize (some teams higher up won other prizes instead like best Malaysian team etc). I can't remember the exact score but the Klang Valley Kiwis also did well.

I ended up being lucky enough to score a medal as the best player on board 3, managing to score a perfect 9/9 (though my first game was a win on forfeit). Also our team only lost one match out of 9 so a very good result. :)

Most of the Aussies are heading back in the next few days, where as myself and Hweimeen still have roughly two more weeks here holidaying then playing the KL Open. Hopefully my perfect score continues!

I am guessing Messrs Lane and Jones were in the Aus team. Why so many teams called "Klang Valley"? Maybe that is where Mr Dato' Tan Chin Nam's horses are bred and maybe he "sponsored" the teams?

I forgot to ask Brian why he has named the teams Klang Valley, but I'm guessing it's just because Klang Valley is indeed a place in Malaysia... Seems to be traditional for the Aussie and Kiwi teams to be called "Klang Valley" something. This year it was the Kiwis, Kangaroos and Koalas.
