I am starting to find that this site is regularly slow, or has difficulty starting up. This has been an ongoing issue for a few days now.

We have brought it to the attention of the site owner a day or two ago when there was a noticeable glitch with the shoutbox. I suspect a disk space problem possibly on a file system used by the database but as far as I know there hasn't been a resolution as yet. Since that time I've found response times to be variable. At times very good but at other times quite poor.

Well that place has been very quiet lately so you'd think there would be nothing there to clog it up.

But actually you're wrong about the Toolbox being fast. It's actually very inconsistent in terms of speed; the threads with game viewers on them often take a ridiculously long time to load, if they even load correctly at all.

Alexa.com's speed ratings:

Chesschat:"Very Fast (0.493 Seconds), 94% of sites are slower."
Toolbox: "Very Slow (16.266 Seconds), 100% of sites are faster."

well altgether to get here was two clicks and took about 1 minute so you work that out - unless it is bigpond slowing down but others are also complaining

if the site is slow due to clogging then cut out many threads that are redundant and uninteresting. yes it may mess up stats but who here really cares about stats (except KB) - a more functional website is much more important.

An excellent suggestion. We could start by deleting all yours.

I greatly doubt the volume of threads and posts is actually the cause of the problem. Hoping STML can work out what it is and fix it (we've let him know about it.) I've found it very slow since about 10 pm, but there is no point re-entering duplicates of posts and shouts; they will appear.

truthfully, the reason i began posting off topic was to save capacity, i thought if preposterous to start threads on every little thing like has happened now for years

No, the reason is you're an inconsiderate lazy sod who either doesn't care how much his posting style affects others' enjoyment of the forum or else deliberately aims to annoy.

Your so-called truth is contradicted by the fact that even when there were existing threads for any number of your pet topics you persisted in spamming irrelevant nonsense about them to unrelated threads on the slenderest of pretexts.

Oh, and the truth you volunteered over there in their shoutbox (which may have actually been true!) only furthered the point I was making.

but as far as actual speeds go the past few days you have been like that Iraqi public relations minister who RW loves to quote, he was claiming victory while the house was burning - a beautiful case of stats, stats and damn stats making them do whatever you want them to

I have noticed that the CCF site has been very slow for some time now (like weeks). I'd like to think that that was not the result of my using Firefox 4b. Most other sites are still quite quick though in Canberra one must not discount TransAct, the roughest broadband network in the country.

The site is still woefully slow on my computer compared with a few months ago. I might try a different browser to see if that helps. But I don't see why it should as other sites are fast enough.

Site is getting slower and slower as time goes on. This issue is becoming a regular one and occurs at all times of the day.

It is starting to get really frustrating wondering if the site is going to load at all, or if posts are going to appear before timing out.

Decided to make this a thread of its own.

I haven't had any problems since the last time you posted except for the last several hours in which it's been more or less consistently slow and sometimes very slow.

Few days back there was a downtime lasting for about 20 mins in mid-morning.

is it anything to do with volume of the board, or with STML ISP plan?

As I undertstand it, it's the server on which the site is hosted.

It's been very slow for me today. For the first time, considered starting a (faster) site. Carn STML. Digitus extractus baby.

Open 'er up. Kait, and vac the dust build-up inside the box. You can't hurt anything as long as you don't get too rough

It may not be the fan, it could be your hard disk starting to fail. So be meticulous about back ups.

Fans are really cheap to buy. It is well worth getting a good computer shop to replace the fan or even install two fans and possibly give your computer a good clean.

I recently had a catastrophic failure of windows. It needed a complete reinstall.
So the shop backed up all my files to a second hard disk. I then bought the disk off them and had it installed on my computer. So I can now back up files from one hard disk to the other. Of course I still have the risk of fire or theft or natural disasters. I am now organizing backing up crucial files in the cloud.

In fact at the moment I have sent a shout that is still to appear and when I try to shout it says 'Posting in Progress'

considering the shoutbox is about 500,000 pages it is no wonder that it takes ages to download. Remember a few upshots here wanted to be top posters so they bumped it till the cows came home, they have about 30,000 posts each that is how you can recognise them.

I recommend completely wiping the shoutbox and starting again. Give one weeks notice in case somebody wants to save stuff from it, but I doubt very much.

If fact do it for the whole board. Only keep a few imp chess threads like arbiters etc and imp games

A proper editor would take a reaping hook to the site

considering the shoutbox is about 500,000 pages it is no wonder that it takes ages to download.

Except that the site doesn't download the whole shoutbox history when you load it. It loads the most recent 20 shouts and if you want more you need to click on archive and load those up separately.

It's the same when loading up the front page. It doesn't have to download all the old threads on site every time it's opened. I don't think it even has to load the thread list until you click on actual forums. The downloaded volume when you open up the site is very small (I've tested this using sites that say how much is loaded).

I was going to point out that AC's knowledge of what affects load times was lacking in the extreme, but then I realised that the majority of those that matter already knew this.

Incidentally, I did a Google search string of 'Hippies that have contributed something to humanity' returns zero results :D

well with a few thousand other hippies today we did a demo on beach against coal seam gas fracking, maybe was on TV? They did same in Casino yesterday and about a hundred protestors were heckled by farmers and needed police escort, they were called hippies and told to go back to Nimbin. Took ages before my previous post appeared, then (in the status bar of Firefox) a message saying waiting for boincstats.com - why is my post using boincstats.com?

'Preview Post' worked very quickly.

Could speed somehow related to links in people's sigs etc? I can't think why that would have an effect, but...

Oddly enough AC might have been on to something here, without quite getting the mechanism right. It could well be that it was the volume of old stuff in the shoutbox that was the issue - not because you had to download it but because bots were going all through it in large numbers. However that's being investigated.

I doubt counselling would help the main addicts. :wall: ;) Seriously the difference is amazing. :owned: I had always thought it was my anti-virus and firewalls slowing things down, but obviously not. Will a way be found to have the shoutbox back without slowing things down again? :hmm: It does reduce the bovine faeces that would otherwise find its way onto the other threads.
